Are schools relaxing uniform rules during this 30°C heatwave?

Hi everyone,

With this 30°C heatwave, I'm just wondering what everyone else's schools are doing about uniforms right now?

Are they still strictly enforcing the whole lot—blazers on, top buttons done up, ties on, shirts tucked in, and long socks? Or have they actually loosened the rules a bit?

Alternatively, have any of you just taken matters into your own hands and sent your DC in wearing something cooler anyway? Just want to see if other schools are actually being sensible this week or if they're still being super strict!

My nephew's have been told to go in pe kit. Shorts and t shirt

TeenToTwenties · 23/06/2026 13:23

Saw both primary and secondary school pupils in PE kit this morning.

HollyIvie · 23/06/2026 13:23

Both my kids schools (one primary, one secondary) are letting them go in their PE kits all week.

Out school doesn't have blazers and shirt tie, they have polo shirts and are allowed shorts as part of the regular uniform. The other school locally that does have blazers, shirt and tie I saw them all going in in PE kit today and presume they will for the rest of the week.

ButterflyLounge · 23/06/2026 13:24

Mine are in PE kits this week

QuaintBeaker · 23/06/2026 13:25

Mine is in P.E kit today, but the school is closing tomorrow and Thurs

MaryBennetsGlasses · 23/06/2026 13:26

We got email on Sunday advising no blazers, jumpers or ties

Same here.

SadiraOfTyr · 23/06/2026 13:27

PE kit and half day here. 39C forecast tomorrow and Thursday. School is mostly south facing, large windows which don't open except on the ground floor for 'safety', no blinds, no AC. So it's basically a giant greenhouse.

MumAsYouAre · 23/06/2026 13:27

Mine are in PE kits (black cotton shorts, white cotton tee).

purplecorkheart · 23/06/2026 13:28

Ireland here and the local primary school here have told the kids no uniforms. Admittedly the school is finishing up on Friday.

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 23/06/2026 13:29

Yesterday secondary was no blazers (still ties??) And now pe kit for the rest of the week. Reminder about water bottles, suncream, hay-fever medicine etc
Primary school- pe kits all week

hamsterdog334 · 23/06/2026 13:29

school staying open (south west) ,they have some classrooms with aircon . no communication about uniform however have sent DC 8 in pe shorts instead of school shorts. (he wears black pe type shorts at home so had them anyway)

elliejjtiny · 23/06/2026 13:32

My dc are in pe kit.

caringcarer · 23/06/2026 13:35

CeeJay81 · 23/06/2026 13:41

Edenmum2 · 23/06/2026 13:43

Ours don’t have to wear uniform this week

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 23/06/2026 15:26

They are in PE kit here.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 23/06/2026 15:28

South Yorkshire here my son's secondary are very generously letting them take their tie and blazers off in school 🤣
They sent a letter saying pe kit will not be considered

50NotFat · 23/06/2026 15:54

My DS is allowed PE kit but another local comp are insisting on full uniform!

MinnieMountain · 23/06/2026 15:57

DS's comprehensive school are allowing no tie or jumper (shorts is a normal option in the summer term) or PE kit.
I passed children from at least 3 other schools this morning wearing PE kit.

RoniaCheetah · 23/06/2026 16:00

Primary have said PE kits all week.

My son's secondary school are very sensible. Their ordinary 'summer order' uniform allows school shorts, short sleeved shirts and no blazer. So they're not having to adapt for this weather because they're generally flexible.

Skybluepinky · 23/06/2026 16:01

Yes PE kits.

We've been banging on about summer uniform options in secondary for ages but to no avail. They had great shorts in infants and juniors - quite long with big patch pockets. DS wore them all year round and was horrified on going to secondary and finding he would have to wear long trousers. He still changes into shorts as soon as he gets home. Oh well, only one more year of uniform nonsense as thankfully we have no uniform in sixth form here.

danglethedingle · 23/06/2026 16:04

DGDs are in PE kit, but I don't see how that is any cooler than the summer girls uniform of a light summer dress and ankle socks. They have trotted off in shorts and polo shirts happily enough though.
