On friday my 12 year old daughter had her school swimming lesson today. When I picked her up, she was unusually quiet, and when we got home, she finally told me what happened in the changing rooms. Apparently, a middle-aged transwoman teacher was assigned to supervise the girls' changing room while they were getting changed into their costumes and drying off afterwards. My daughter told me that this teacher actually used the communal shower cubicles and showered right beside one of the other girls in her class. I am absolutely livid. I want to make it clear that I have no malice toward trans individuals in their private lives, but this is a safeguarding issue, plain and simple. 12-year-old girls deserve privacy and dignity while undressing and showering, and they should not be sharing these spaces with someone who is biologically male, regardless of how they identify. My daughter felt incredibly uncomfortable but didn't feel she could say anything to a teacher. I contacted the school and I was told that the school is "fully compliant with local authority inclusivity policies" and that because the member of staff identifies as a woman, no safeguarding protocols were breached. They basically told me the matter is closed and that they will not be taking any action or changing the supervision rota for next week.
