Help us with a business name please! 🙏

Nephew is setting himself up with a small landscaping & gardening business. He doesn't just want to use "Nephews Name Landscaping & Gardening" as his business name. He wants something that's either quirky, unique, a smart play on words, funny.... anything that stands out really. Something different.

He has a list on the go, but he's not settled on anything yet. Would the MN hive mind be able to help out please?

Nephew's had a rough time of it recently after some workplace bullying (office environment) left him on antidepressants and off sick for a bit. The employer agreed to pay nephew 3 months wages to just leave without a fuss. His self esteem was on the floor, he didn’t want to go back, so he agreed. I'm so proud to now see him pick himself back up, break away from the career path he miserably stuck at for nearly 20 yrs and be excited by a new challenge and future doing something he actually enjoys. I really want to see his business take off, and a memorable business name would give him a brilliant start.

Thanks 👍

I am rubbish at this sort of thing but wish your nephew lots of luck in his new venture. I am sure that someone will be along soon with a very clever and catchy name.

HadEnoughOfBears · 22/06/2026 20:11

Not recommending that you copy another company’s name but there’s a gardening business in our area called Sorrel & Hardy and it makes me chuckle every time I see it 🤣

OneBusyFinch · 22/06/2026 20:14

Good luck to him! Did he consult ACAS before making his decision? They offer free advice.

as to his business, some ideas

  • Jolly Green Gardening
  • Doigts Verts
  • Darling Buds

Ha! That is so good!
He won't copy that, but that's definitely the sort of thing he'd like.

Neat Edges, Quick Trim...?

Not sure what to suggest, but like other posters I wish him every success. 🌼

tarheelbaby · 22/06/2026 20:22

In the past, people chose names with A... because those came up first in the directory ...
A1 Garden Landscaping & Gardening
Obvs, you might not want to reveal his name but that could give you a direction ... Eden Gardening (if he were called Adam ...)

Does he have a speciality/preference? That might give a direction.
Over the Hedge (ok that's a kids' film but if he's more into the bigger picture of a property)

Or if he's looking for regular customers needing all-round maybe a basic like:
Dependable Garden Care

Doggymummar · 22/06/2026 20:23

Short back and stripes?

I think it's important to have what you do in the name though so you are memorable I would go for Surname or first name Garden Maintenance so Bills, or Williams.

I run a networking compan6 for small businesses and some of the names do not give you a clue what the6 do. Bias anyone - a software company Cloppers, dog walking, sues Shoots, juice bar

... these were off the top of my head (I was heading in a weird direction) but you'll find AI has a zillion suggestions. I'd advise against against being too much of a clever clogs, you shouldn't sound like you don't take it seriously!

Also, practically every decent garden-related pun has been used. You do want to avoid sharing the name of another business, especially if theirs is bigger than yours because they'd come up first if anyone was searching for you.

He's aware of ACAS but by that point he just wanted out. He didn't want to fight to stay in a job he hated and where the boss overlooked the bullying because the bully was the bosses best mate.

He fell into the job as a school leaver but never actually enjoyed it. The outdoors and gardening are his passion, so he's using this episode as a kick up the jacksy to change career entirely and put it behind him.

Thank you for the suggestions, they're great. I'll note them down for passing on 🙂

This is a really bad strategy. People don't Google quirky names or a play on words. They Google "gardening services in X area". So that info should be in the business name.

I have a small business with a quirky name. I've been successfully snowed under with work for 8 years. Word of mouth and my memorable name has put more work my way than Google ever has.

There's also lots of small local businesses in my county from a variety of trades that use quirky names and again, are remembered household names who've been running for years.

You can also attach tag lines to business names so they encompass the nature of the business and appear on Google.

You can also register your business in Google, where you register it under an industry category.

So it could be:

Name: "The Trim Reaper"
Tagline: "Gardening & Landscaping Services in place name"

A quirky memorable name is also great for individual branding and creating social media pages and stand-out social media posts.

Just wanted to echo this.

I know it’s not as fun as puns but the absolute best thing he can do is include the word ‘gardener’ or ‘gardening’ in the name along with the area in which he is based / will be working.

If you’re looking for a gardener you Google ‘(place name) gardeners’, so you want to give yourself the best chance of ranking in that result.

Boring but true and best for his bank balance! Wishing him the very best of luck 🤞🏻

Stefanosgirl · 22/06/2026 21:11

Lawn & Order, I Beg your Garden, The Sodfather, Blade Runners, Rake it till you Make It, The Hedge Fund.
These ones are definitely quirky and stand out, maybe they are even memorable not sure if your nephew would consider them as suitable to his new profession, but best of luck to him!
