My effing washing machine is a habitual liar

NigellaAwesome · 22/06/2026 02:27

Here I am in the small hours, waiting for my washing machine to finish, it having assured me it would be finished by midnight. For reasons I’ll not go into, I need to hang out the wash this evening, so it will be dry by the morning, and I need to be up and left by 10am, yet it is now approaching 2.30am. I’m not the only one to be lied to, am I? Was I a fool to ever believe its promises?

Mine was due to finish at 2am. It's still sploshing away Confused

CatherinedeBourgh · 22/06/2026 05:31

yes, mine can stretch the last 10 minutes for hours.

Dolphinnoises · 22/06/2026 05:31

Well, mine is a bit of a fibber - should have finished a cycle at 1035, I was up until 11 waiting - but nothing on yours!

Noddyspointyhat · 22/06/2026 05:35

So are my bathroom scales, don't get in a sweat over it !

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/06/2026 05:37

You know you can't hang your washing out overnight, don't you? 😱

Gatekeeper · 22/06/2026 05:46

Mine also fibs...that 1 minute on the final spin lasts ages, the swine!

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/06/2026 06:01

Ours always lies. Had 5 minutes left on a wash today, yeah right, was still going strong after 10 minutes.

Lying little Bosch bastard.

DistantEarlyWarning · 22/06/2026 06:03

On the occasion mine pulls a stunt like this I cancel the cycle and run the 15 minute fast wash. Your washing machine is not the boss of you, whatever it thinks.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 22/06/2026 06:04

Our washing machine is truthful (mostly) but our air fryer takes an eternity to count down the last minute. The last minute goes on for about 5 minutes.

Mine is a lying bastard too.

Something to do with spiders rubbing their knackers over your washing at night.

Gets trotted out on any thread about washing left out over night.

Have we had “darked on” yet?

I’m traumatised by the thought.

Sounds just like my Bosch.

Could I ask, does your washing machine not have a rinse and spin cycle, or a spin and drain cycle? Apparently my MIL has a machine that does neither? I was astonished as mine always have. ( can't remember the make of hers but it cost a small fortune) mine is a Candy and does
both.

Pennyplant19 · 22/06/2026 06:28

Mine is a dreadful liar too. What irritates me more is the symphony it plays to announce it’s actually finished. Like, you had one job, just fucking do it and don’t expect a round of applause.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 22/06/2026 06:42

Yes mine too. I’ve never known 10 minutes last over an hour

PermanentTemporary · 22/06/2026 06:48

Too late now but I’d stop it, spin it and not be dictated to by its little games.

You can turn that off - first thing I did with ours. It's liberating.

beigetriangle · 22/06/2026 06:56

are you overfilling on a short (ish) cycle?
mine (bosch) gets very creative jumping back and forth in time during the last '10' minutes. if I fill correctly, according to the manual the timing is pretty acurate.

the short cycles are usually made for a half or 2/3 load.

check the manual.

I have a lying little Bosch bastard too. It sings its merry little 'All finished!' song and when I go to the kitchen, it won't release the lock until it's ready. I swear there's a goblin inside holding the door shut.

It does. But it claims it needs 22 minutes for a rinse and spin and 15 minutes for a quick wash.

It’s a Bosch, so I find it best to take a devious approach rather than challenging its nonsensical rules head on.

MisfitMagpie · 22/06/2026 07:15

My Bosch also lies, it said 5 minutes remaining yesterday then changed to 15, I know that the initial time it starts with will always be longer but normally around an additional 30 minutes.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 22/06/2026 07:18

I have come to the conclusion that one Bosch minute is about ten normal minutes.

Silverbirchleaf · 22/06/2026 07:21

My washing machine lies as well. It say it has ten minutes to go - 45 minutes later…
