London Euston station. Currently there. Horrific.

I’ll be there in 2hrs. So over London, moving north in 2 months. Will always love London, but i’m ready for a quieter life now.

Generally speaking though, big chains destroy the soul of small towns as local businesses can’t compete and you end up with lots of empty shops. It’s always sad when that happens

Yes and also some of the towns mentioned - some as a result of bombing - were redeveloped unsympathetically in the 1960s and 70s.
For me it’s Matlock. Nothing to do with the architecture, which I like, or the people, I just feel it’s got a weird feel to it.

I think anywhere with a big dock can be a bit horrible. I used to hate getting the boat from Larne over to Scotland when I was little. Just a really unpleasant area. I know dockyards aren't the nicest places, but I remember Larne being especially horrible back in the day. It may have improved a lot since then though.

I wouldn't say they are bad areas. They are actually very nice areas, but I have never fallen in love with the lake district or the peak district. Just never had a nice time there. Think it is because they get very busy and something about the hills and mountains just gives me a weird vibe.

Pleased to report Larne is still a shithole 😃

It's a bit boring and non-descript but I don't think that's enough to get it on a thread about the worst places in the UK - especially considering some of the real dumps that have been mentioned.

It's a retirement town and probably not fun to grow up in. But the beachfront and De La Warr pavilion are nice, and I have such fond memories of staying with my grandma in the summer there. She made everything fun! Couldn't get my vote. (That goes to Slough without a doubt.)

Itiswhysofew · Today 12:06

All sounds like the end of a civilisation 😂

Please tell me you like where you actually live ☺️
.
I'm from London, but dont live there now. The thing about it that stands out to me is that the high streets can be really grotty, even if the residential areas aren't. Councils have a lot to answer for, especially when house prices are so high.

I think there's something about 70s concrete towns that just doesn't work for me.

This is interesting. I have to go to the lake district a lot. When I see the mountains along the M6 I just feel creeped out. It's a drive I absolutely hate.

I absolutely love that drive. We drive to Scotland for every year for a holiday and that stretch of the M6 - it ‘s the highest in the UK I think - is when I first start to feel really excited. And the Tebay Services of course.

For people saying Blackpool it is the people who viit Blackpool who make the shocking mess often with drunken behaviour, out of season Blackpool is lovely. The immediate outskirts of the town are very run down but thankfully that is being rectified. Also the people who live in these areas are very very rarely from Blackpool with most being from other countries. To see the real Blackpool go to the The St Annes end or Bispham end. Clean treelined streets, nice houses, well kept Gardens and lovely Parks. If you don't like Blackpool then feel free to not visit and oh if you do please take your rubbish home with you.

I agree. Belfast is great! I think of it kind of like Dublin was 20 years ago before it became rather soulless and grotty.

Really friendly people, walkable, not overrun with tourists and while there aren't many 'sights' as such, the centre has some nice Victorian architecture and of course touring areas like the Shankill and Falls roads is fascinating, and much safer than some might imagine.

I went to Belfast on a coach and ferry day-trip from Scotland to see the Titanic Experience. I only walked around the centre of the city but it was much nicer than I was expecting, clean, with good architecture and green spaces. Having grown up in the 80s, I was self-conscious of my English accent, but no one reacted badly to it - in fact no one reacted to it at all.

The Titanic Experience was very well done. The only thing that puzzles me is Belfast's (advertised) pride in being "the home of The Titanic"!

SilenceInside · Today 12:14

@DJKATIE we fully intend not to go back to Blackpool, and we always take our rubbish away with us! Somehow, encouraging people not to visit what is intended as a tourist resort seems to be a bit self defeating.

So many cities claim a Titanic link.

Belfast of course, and Liverpool, Southampton and Cobh in Ireland.

Belfast probably has the best claim, for what it's worth!

Dungeness. Famous for being the UK's only officially classified desert, it features a stark shingle landscape dotted with abandoned fishing boats, distinctive wooden houses, two lighthouses, and the imposing Dungeness nuclear power stations. I felt really depressed when I went there.

I thought Dungeness was beautiful in a vast empty kind of way well apart from the numerous power stations. Has a great fish shack that people drive for miles to get too. Only went 2 years ago.

igelkott2026 · Today 12:17

Stockton on Tees. But it was about two decades ago.

One other place I hated and felt really uncomfortable in was the area around Wembley Stadium.

Belfast is fabulous, by the way.

Falkirk , bad vibes

Must be the Kelpies!

A colleague of mine bought a house in Falkirk, because she worked freelance and the city had good transport links to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling, but house prices were much lower. I felt like saying to her that there was a reason for that. But I didn't.

Another couple I’ve been to and couldn’t wait to leave.

Wolverhampton
Glenrothes

I’ve been all over the UK for work, so I’m sure more will come to me.

Inextremis · Today 12:19

Bolton, closely followed by Dungeness (the shingle!).

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · Today 12:21

Huddersfield. I don't live near it anymore but even driving through it made me so depressed. Anywhere ugly and lacking in trees.

Why is blackpool any worse than any other of the derelict seaside towns we have on these fair islands?
I mean we are awash with these kinds of places, I would have thought that at least Blackpool has some kind of personality or vibe that the ghost towns dont. Am surprised to see so many voices against it!

I assume as more of us have visited it as it does still have stuff to do , some of the other places are quite niche or you might only go there if you have an asscoaition with it. Last time I went i saw a bloke speeding along on what I can only assume was a stolen mobility vehicle, the ones with the cover on the top. That summed it up really. It has a lovely theatre, not the winter gardens an older one - saw An Inspector calls last year.

I am going to jump on the Blackpool bandwagon. I’m in NI. My dad worked in Harland and Wolff when I was a child and every summer loads of shipyard workers and their families poured into Blackpool. I have some good memories of my holidays there, although I was often extremely bored. My parents went back for a holiday in the early 2000’s and DP and I went and stayed over for a night as we were on holiday a few miles away. Bloody hell, it was awful. Someone described it as a rickety shithole and it really was. So dilapidated and tired and grubby and depressing.
