I was at university in Bradford many years ago and had my first experience of curry. I suppose we were insulated in our little bubble, but it wasn’t awful then. That’s a long time ago though.

I’ve lived in two other places mentioned, or at least, nearby. Woking town centre always had nightmare traffic, but it did have relatively decent shopping at one time. Now it’s awful. I lived a few miles from Bognor as well and know of the public toilets mentioned. That area is absolutely the worst. I was very glad to move.

@Fetchthevet, Bishops Stortford? I think it’s alright but a bit dull and now becoming a bit like a huge housing estate.

@GoldThumb, do you remember the village? One has a scarecrow festival once a year.

@TigerRag, agree with Harlow though they’re apparently regenerating it and they’ll be getting a big M&S food 😂 but it’s a bit of a dump.

I didn’t like Kings Lynn. Jaywick also isn’t very nice. There’s been quite a few places where I’ve not felt massively safe like Brighton. I didn’t like the vibe much at all. I lived in Hull for a long time and I actually didn’t find it too bad. A lot of these places seem to be awful due to deprivation and anti social behaviour probably in part stemming from deprivation.

Agree that Bournemouth has gone downhill. My aunt lives there and says she feels quite unsafe. Drug dealers on the road, sex workers. She saw someone having sex with a sex worker in a phone box opposite her house in the morning. She doesn’t feel very safe there now.

Unfortunately not, I meant to find it on the map after but then forget, and now don’t know what route we took. When we have driven to stanstead previously we didn’t use this route, can only assume something happened on the motorway and we were diverted.

We just kind of cut through it.

Really? Shopping centre and Olympic park are great, and very safe. Lovely in summer, lots of people with kids. Hackney Wick nearby, really nice.

Though I agree older parts are a bit dodgy - but then again, not worse than rest of dodgy bits of London!

That road which separates Old and New Stratford is like the Berlin Wall. With Stratford station as Checkpoint Charlie.

AbsoluteHoot · Yesterday 11:41

I just remembered Blackpool. I went once and once only. What a hideous place.

Iwashedmyfloor · Yesterday 11:41

Wraysbury.

I got confused and thought I was going to Weybridge. God, the disappointment 😔

Holyhead.

went there for a day as staying nearby. 2pm on a Saturday and everywhere was closed! Apart from one cafe and the waitress obviously wished they were. Absolutely bizarre. We didn’t stop long!

nice to see my home town mentioned. It’s not the best place but certainly better than Holyhead!

I have to agree on that! We stayed 1 night before getting an early sailing to Ireland and it was grim!

Here I sit in Holyhead with muddy ale and mouldy bread
All Christian victuals stink of fish
I'm where my enemies would wish.
Swift.

Holyhead basically exists because of its ferry link with an EU capital. The area voted for Brexit. Now lots of traffic goes directly from Dublin to ports in France , rather than using Britain as a landbridge. Nice going lads

I'm going down to the beach shortly and you do see all sorts of dress down there. Lots of bum cheeks in young women in shorts and very tight leggings, lots of crop trousers for all ages. There are quite a lot of older people there (including us) and some of the very elderly people do wear very smart and classy summer clothes.

An elderly man went past us last week, he was very smart, cotton trousers, shirt and jacket and was also wearing a very dashing hat too. He looked fab.

I'm actually on the wrong thread😂😳

I know this isn't in the same league as shit run down cities, but... Scafell Pike. We went in from Wasdale Head and I just got such a terrible sense of foreboding, I put up with it for about an hour then I had to leave. It just felt... malevolent? I've never felt like that outside of nightmares before. As soon as we got on the road again I started to feel better.

This is interesting. I have to go to the lake district a lot. When I see the mountains along the M6 I just feel creeped out. It's a drive I absolutely hate.

ToadRage · Yesterday 11:44

Birmingham. There are nice areas but during the bin strike there was rubbish everywhere and walking back to the car late one night we came across a smackhead shooting up on the stairs. Edinburgh was also not nice during bin strikes but you could just about see a beautiful city underneath.

Warrington is pretty bad also agree Blackpool is awful too

Lifeomars · Yesterday 11:52

This thread has made me think about where I live. I'm in a rough area and it has been hit hard by austerity. I was out the other day running some errands and counted 4 fly tips, saw a group of drug users fighting at the entrance to the newly renovated rest gardens so nobody was in the garden Thought how depressing it was and went into town and it was even worse! A once thriving street is now lined with rough sleepers' tents, I saw two street drinkers, cans in hand, having a run in with the police. Boarded up shops everywhere, litter, ebikes and escooters powering down all the pedestrian only spaces. If I was just visiting I would think it was a horrible place, dirty and mildly threatening

Luton

But Stevenage, Basildon, Dagenham, etc are all horrible too. My home town Colchester has turned into an utter dump as well. I hate the place.

I’m far from offended that my nearest town has been mentioned several times. I know Ilkeston is generally considered a shithole but it’s MY shithole and I’ll always have a soft spot for it. Plus Stacey’s Bakery and the Burnt Pig make up for all the bad parts. Grin

And FWIW the worst place I’ve ever bean is Brean near Burnham on Sea.

There's a place along that coast worse than Burnham on the mud? 😱. So glad I've missed that one.

BettyTheGreat · Yesterday 11:54

I think anywhere with a big dock can be a bit horrible. I used to hate getting the boat from Larne over to Scotland when I was little. Just a really unpleasant area. I know dockyards aren't the nicest places, but I remember Larne being especially horrible back in the day. It may have improved a lot since then though.

I wouldn't say they are bad areas. They are actually very nice areas, but I have never fallen in love with the lake district or the peak district. Just never had a nice time there. Think it is because they get very busy and something about the hills and mountains just gives me a weird vibe.

BountifulPantry · Yesterday 11:54

London Euston station. Currently there. Horrific.

Widnes,as a former hgv driver I can't think of a more depressing and unfriendly place on Earth .

Jujubeansjo · Yesterday 11:55

Enjoying the thread.

Chester is lovely, if a tiny bit shallow and soulless.

I had a strange experience in Shropshire countryside, felt oddly claustrophobic even though I was in fresh air. Felt like that all week of our lodge holiday and was relieved to leave. Very odd.

Birmingham is my home town. Its nothing like It was in the 90s. It was always very working class and rough round the edges, but in a good way. Now though, it's like it's been taken over by zombies. Its scary and disjointed. It makes me really really sad. I used to go shopping on my own at 14 in the city centre and never felt unsafe (and my mum let me!) Most grown women can feel a bit unsafe in the city centre now. There are still some nice enough parts outside of the centre like Sutton Coldfield and Four Oaks, Harbourne and Kings Heath are the trendy parts these days but on the whole its not a great place anymore.

I am hoping not to see too much more of Lincolnshire on here, I've booked some time away in Mablethorpe, Louth and Sutton on sea and hope they aren't mentioned soon 🤣🤣

Bognor Regis.

PetulaGordeno · Yesterday 11:56

Not the Blackpool of my childhood but the place it is now. It feels really sad, and despite money spent on it, it feels like a ghost town.

Mold in north Wales in the70s.
A trendsetter for urban deprivation.
It would be nice if a mumsnetter was able to say it had improved in the intervening years!

It hasn’t. I grew up in Buckley next door, but moved away years ago, but often go back to visit family and it hasn’t changed at all.

I've never been in Colchester and associate with the 'I Claudius' novels so think of it as a quaint historical place!

Seems I'm wrong?
