3 year old injured by crocodiles - man arrested

So I assume the man deliberately placed the child into the crocodile enclosure. Psychopath? Sounds similar to the man who threw the boy off the Tate?

(And also, not connected but these places are shit for the animals and should be shut down)

You fund mental health services properly.

There has been a considerable drop in the number of nursing students specialising in patients with learning disabilities. As an example.

Even if you have the money sometimes it’s about finding actual staff with the correct education and training.

And what can you do if those people don’t exist?

ERthree · 18/06/2026 20:46

We had asylums for a reason. Of course we need a new updated system but surely we realise some people are so mentally ill that we must look after them, shield them from the world and keep others safe.

BeardySchnauzer · 18/06/2026 20:47

They don’t know if he was injured by the crocs but I imagine it is highly unlikely as they are kept well fed

I imagine it was the fall

very sad and I hope he makes a full recovery

XenoBitch · 18/06/2026 20:47

Kirbert2 · 18/06/2026 20:40

Instead, we'll likely end up with ableist comments if it turns out to be true even if the carer/s are to blame.

Poor boy. I hope he was injured by the fall and not both the fall and the crocodiles.

Yeah, and a person needing 2 carers is likely to have something like a severe learning disability and/or autism (there is a lady in my town who is out with 2 carers. She tries to bite people that get too close).... and like you said then we will have abliest comments about how people with LD/ASD should be locked up even if they have never done anything wrong before.

It is horrible anyway, and I hope the little lad makes a full recovery.

And what about when the people with the right education and training are half the size of the people who need care and don’t have the physical size or strength to overpower them.

BarryKentPoet · 18/06/2026 20:50

I'm local, the crocodile did but his mouth around the boy but didn't bite very hard (luckily!). The man is rumoured to have learning disabilities and was completely unknown to the boy and his family.

I don't see that. I see capable looking people with them, but if it happens others should not be out supervising people who they are not able to control who might prove a danger to the wider public.

I see people with special needs out all over the place with either one carer to one or one carer to two

So do I, and the vast vast majority are harmless.

SN =/= dangerous

They are more likely to injure themselves than other people, or be taken advantage of. People do not have carers because they are dangerous... they have them to protect them. I know a few people with LD, and they don't always have a carer with them anyway. There is not enough funding for that to start with but they do get so many hours of them to use. They tend to have one if they need to do particular errands or be taken to a group. Some can still happily and adequately go out to a cafe or shop on their own if they are comfortable doing so.
People needing 2:1 etc are still entitled to have a life and be taken out for day trips etc. It would be cruel to keep them locked up. There are many parents of profoundly disabled kids who are fighting to have their children released from sections in hospitals that are not appropriate for them.

Theres a lot of people with mh issues who at one time would have been in a facility.

Once after work walking down street in brighton a man clearly not mentally well going around swinging about 6ft metal pole at people. That was 20y ago.

Some places restrict single men without kids entering.

A fair few mental health patients are in facilities but the mental health facilities are now open , meaning the patients ‘escape’ through open doors! Mental health services are on their knees! Police are called now to investigate these missing people but if there’s no leads then the can’t be found and things like this can happen.

BlushingBrightly · 18/06/2026 21:07

I suspect we'll eventually find out that like the Tate Modern attacker and the Nottingham murderer, this was someone who really should have been sectioned for their own safety but, more importantly, that of others. Once again, members of the public pay the price.

It's people with severe mental health problems doing this. Learning disabilities may also be present but this is a mental health thing. Unfortunately the idea that it's better - and, coincidentally, cheaper - for people like this to be out and about needs to be seriously questioned.

Well as a result this man will now be locked up.

So people with additional needs shouldn't have human rights? And should be locked up 24/7 in solidarity confinement like the worst criminals. Through no fault of their own.

No thanks.

Sadly, I think you are right.

i assumed a man with learning disability and was immediately reminded of the tate Sad

Honeyhonay · 18/06/2026 21:15

This is absolutely terrifying.

It is alleged the man who did this had carers with him. He was not an escaped patient from a ward.

greenfingers2026 · 18/06/2026 21:18

I read about this at work earlier and it is so horrifying. I can't imagine how helpless the poor parents felt and I really hope their little boy is okay. That crocodile enclosure looks like a disaster waiting to happen unfortunately.

EasternStandard · 18/06/2026 21:18

Absolutely horrendous

Bunnycat101 · 18/06/2026 21:19

I can’t imagine how the family of that little boy even start to process it. They’d presumably taken him for a nice day out and he’s now critical due to an absolutely traumatic event that shouldn’t have happened.

I fear this will be another ‘lessons will be learnt’ type situation while the government carries on massively underfunding mental health and learning disability services.

FluffMagnet · 18/06/2026 21:20

I've been here in the past, on my own with 3 children between 3-6. It never occurred to me that something like this would happen, so they were happily running back and forth as could not climb over the fences themselves (within eyesight but not always within reaching distance). Absolutely terrifying, and my heart goes out to the family of the little boy. May he make a swift recovery.

Latenightreader · 18/06/2026 21:22

I've been there a couple of times (with my then 3 year old) and I thought the barriers felt safe and sufficiently high, safe enough for me not to keep hold of her as we walked around, and I'm cautious with both heights and reptile houses. You are about 15 feet over the crocodiles most of the time.

Clearly not as safe as I'd assumed when horrific incidents like this occur.

This.
its a small minority.
and a small minority of people without learning disabilities also commit crimes.
we need to make sure that anger and fear doesn’t start driving extreme views.

If he was out with 2 carers then is it a question of undefunding? I'd argue if more than 2 carers are needed for a setting, then the setting isn't suitable.

RonaldMcDonaldTrump · 18/06/2026 21:25

XenoBitch · 18/06/2026 20:25

That came from people who were there posting on the zoo's page.

But like I said, the truth will come out eventually.

TBH, I hope it was the case about the carers so it stops all the xenophobic comments I am reading online about it. The racists are having a field day.

I'm not on social media. How are the racists trying to pin it on immigrants this time?
