A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Can I join please? I've followed this thread for ages.

I'm following Piggy's demise with huge enjoyment, the trouble is I think we're in for a lot worse which is quite depressing. I keep reading that Louise Haigh will be in Burnham's cabinet. THE WOMAN HAS A CONVICTION FOR FRAUD!! Is it too much to ask that our MP's are just not criminals? I've pretty much given up hoping that they might have some economic and political nous but really convicted criminals?

Are you sure they're not doing a Reeves and trying out the optics on a bunch of potential candidates?

Edited

I have no idea how their minds work. I do know that when the optics are that bad they're probably wasting their time.

They're terrified at the prospect of an early GE after waiting so long for their chance. Hopefully, AB will continue Starmer's good work to date and ensure they only get a single (ideally short) term and then return to the wilderness for the foreseeable. Some of the Starmer fawning on here is utterly ludicrous.

I've raged at many a prime minister of all parties. In Starmers case it's his lack of cojones irks me the most.

Recycling the same rubbish over and over with the same outcome.

It looks like he’s going but still no. 10 pushing out he’s not going lines as of midnight last night according to Times radio.

It’s annoying, just let it go. He’s toast.

How long can he drag this thing out. Watching him cling on is painful.

It's desperately undignified at this point. He knows he's toast, just go with some grace! Stop making yourself look even more of a twat than you already have!

What a terrible indictment of our politics today that out of over 400 sitting labour mps, they couldn't produce one to replace Starmer, but had to parachute a 'personality' in instead.

Nuthatch26 · 21/06/2026 09:05

Good morning 😁

Welcome to the new names on the thread. 👋

So The Observer are saying he'll resign on Monday, No.10 saying he's staying.
Times reporting that Burnham will accept a September timetable, which probably means that like Starmer, Burnham doesn't yet have a plan for government. What a bloody circus! Glad they're not my monkeys.

The Times also reporting that Burnham will sack Reeves as she doesn't represent change.

When so many newspapers run front page headlines about Starmer resigning you can be fairly sure the story has been briefed out by Starmer’s camp, so I trust it.

And there we go. Starmer exits with all the sure-footedness, consistency and iron resolve he’s demonstrated as PM: “I have a duty to the country, I am a man of principle, I have done great things, I cannot allow chaos, so I will stand firm and I WILL FIGHT (until after the weekend)”.

I suppose the consolation for the weeping nation is that Starmer can now spend his time flying around the world (no change there) to bring peace and prosperity through his deft statesmanship and huge international standing 🙄. He can work for the return of sausages everywhere.

Like everyone else sensible, I do not expect the vacuous say-anything-for-a-vote Burnham to be any better than Starmer. But I do hope he can find it in himself to be less unpleasant than Starmer was to his opponents, his colleagues and civil servants. The signs aren’t good on that front - apparently Burnham’s very precious about criticism - but we can hope.

Well yes, that speaks volumes doesn't it. And this is all happening less than two years in. Clowns.

We've been saying this. How ridiculous that there is such a dearth of capability and talent in over 400 people!

Who's going to bankroll him to fly round the world. Pay him for his nuggets of wisdom he's no public speaker. Blair had friends/connections/personality.

Yep. He’s not going to have loads of options. Boris Johnson picked up speaking stuff. All the others were fine after going.

Middlerage · 21/06/2026 09:11

Well it shows that they don’t believe in manifestos, I’m assuming AB is going to do a bunch of things that aren’t in there.

I really hope that is his legacy.

Middlerage · 21/06/2026 09:12

It also shows Labour know exactly how unpopular the first two years have been that none of the current cabinet have the numbers.

Lord Alli maybe?

Failing that, I would guess that foreign governments will foot the bill to have the great sage Starmer rock up to end wars, spread love and advise on picking ambassadors.

Lord Alli was campaigning for Burnham.

Oh dear. And we can rule out the US, China and Europe as welcoming countries and regions. Starmer will have to trot the globe by Zoom calls.

Lord Alli sure does love to cuddle up to power, doesn’t he.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/06/2026 09:32

Nuthatch26 · 21/06/2026 09:20

As Jonathan Hinder, the Labour MP for Pendle & Clitheroe, puts it: “The sense you pick up from conversations with voters is that Keir simultaneously doesn’t stand for anything and yet is incredibly sanctimonious, his style embodying the HR proceduralism that people can’t stand from their workplace.”

spot on there!
