Plus it seems like all it does is let's off big tech companies having actual responsibilities

So what's your answer to the problem?

and, when you save a hard copy of various documentaries, or information to study eg pdf , chatgpt etc then the internet is only needed to keep up with the latest info
so yes if its shut off now, then theres always books to study, society survied for many years before the internet, so yea society does not need the internet in its current form.

We do more than read on the internet.

and society also did pre internet, society would adapt

If any transport other than horse and cart and penny farthing bicycles were the only thing allowed on our roads, would you be happy to sit back and say it it fine because there was a time that was all we had anyway?

society had cars pre internet so im focusing that we would still have the majority of society if the internet was shut off, thats my point then it solves the social media issue.

But your argument is that we managed before the internet so we will again.
The same could apply to transport.

The internet is way more than social media.
I think the sort of people who think the internet is nothing more than social media were not around when it became available.

ShetlandishMum · 16/06/2026 23:23

The ban won't change a lot.

ok fair point, well as the internet began as a military invention with ARPAnet, i believe then restrict it to military and govt systems and companies, and restrict the general public from using it.

nopenotplaying · 16/06/2026 23:25

Unless I’m mistaken they are not restricting use of WhatsApp. The fact that even the police can’t read stuff on there is mind boggling.

well people then need to be better behaved with social media,

PenelopeJoanSterling · 16/06/2026 23:28

the internet for society is a privilege and not a right

It is pretty much essential as a utility now. You need internet access to claim and be on benefits.

but its the social media aspect thats causing the issues, so then we could work with big tech to shut down all the social media aspects of the internet, then people still get to use it just that its not social media anymore ?

Adults can use it. I feel this ban has come into place because some parents were using it to keep their kids entertained. Poor parenting.

like with many things the minority spoil it for the rest of society

OohOohOohAhh · 16/06/2026 23:45

Tbh it may well be workable. I’ve had to verify my age recently over various apps. Most okay because my accounts are so old but have also had to submit a photo of my valid passport and also let them take pictures of my face to estimate my age. So if that’s the tack they’re going for, the kids would have to rely on adult made accounts with adult dates of birth and submitting photos of their face. DD will be 15 next spring. I won’t be doing that but I figure that there will be many who do.
I don’t think there will be many adults that ready to give up their social media PP. And “big tech” won’t be remotely interested in shutting down social media. Seriously, how do you think they make their money?! That’s very naive. Might as well ask for NASA insider info.
