Entitled behaviour of some dog owners

I am on holiday in the UK. I accept that the area I am in is popular with dog owners and I accept the presence of dogs, but the sheer number of them in some spaces and the thoughtless behaviour of some dog owners is really starting to grate.
I'm in a cafe - restaurant place for lunch. Most other people in here have their dogs with them...fine. But some people have brought in clearly reactive dogs which are intermittently barking loudly at each other, whining, flying into a rage when other dogs go past their tables and growling. It makes me jump out of my skin when they loudly go off and set a baby off crying in shock. There is outside seating available and it's quite a nice day so why they can't sit outside I don't know.
Add to that, dogs sitting on the seats, being allowed to reach too far on their leads making them a trip hazard, and sniffing around my legs as they go past on leads with owners making no attempt to remedy any of this.
The staff are young and very polite and seem a bit ill equipped to deal with any of this.
I'm not out to spoil anyone's day so am keeping quiet but it is not relaxing. I feel like I'm in a minority these days though with not finding this enjoyable.

I agree with everything you're saying, but are you new to MN?? This is not going to end well 🍿

Like I said, I don't mind dogs being there and could see there were some dogs present. It's the behaviour of some of the dogs and their owners which is not great. I would have expected better behaviour in a confined public space

Cute photos are fine, no problem with me.
I like dogs if they and their owners are not being a pain in the ass

You might’ve been better adding these very well covered musings to one of the already existing ‘I hate dogs’ posts.

Totally agree and I've got two dogs
It's hard work training a dog ,and in my experience a lot of owners just don't bother .
I hate going in somewhere to eat and finding dogs in there ,if I wanted dog hair in my food ,Id stay home to eat .

MyArtfulGreySloth · 16/06/2026 14:05

You’re not allowed to hate dogs on here op. This site is full of entitled dog owners who think they can do no wrong.

Glitterbiscuits · 16/06/2026 14:05

We were out for lunch on Sunday and a woman was pulling bits off her plate and putting them in a dog bowl under the table.
Later I saw a waiter bring a dog bowl of water for a different dog.
While I’m used to dogs being out and about these were new things for me.
The dogs were quiet.

Screamingabdabz · 16/06/2026 14:07

As per usual the predictable ‘fuck you’ from dog owners who don’t give a flying shit. Only their animals matter. 🙄

Dogs should not be in eating establishments. It’s disgusting.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/06/2026 14:09

My dogs would rather stay at home or out for a walk, than go anywhere else.

Pootles34 · 16/06/2026 14:10

Love a dog in a pub, but the three bark rule should always apply! Three barks and you're out... ideally with 'yer barred' from the barman.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/06/2026 14:11

I’m a dog owner and agree with some of the things you say. I bet the reactive dogs were the little sort - daschunds, chihuahuas, jack Russell’s etc. (sorry for stereotyping) . I find many of these owners will allow their dogs to bark aggressively with an apologetic shrug.

We quite often walk along a seaside promenade. I’m always amazed how often (usually little dogs again) dog owners will allow the lead to extend at full length making it a trip hazard.

I was in a cafe a few weeks back and a reactive dog flew at a lovely softie dog that walked past. It sent the table flying, with plates and crockery smashing on the floor. The softie dog which ironically was a big German shepherd looked taken aback and didn't react. The stupid owner of the psycho dog tried to laugh it off until she caught my eye and I said 'maybe you should take your dog outside before it hurts someone'. She looked annoyed and said 'but it's raining'. I said 'better that than someone gets hurt' and gave her the stare. She got the message and huffed off.

A women in her 70s got bitten by a stall holders reactive dog in our local market. It just lunged at her from under the table. Police have been informed as the bite broke the skin and she needed to go to hospital to get checked out. Poor woman was pale and shaking.

Some dog owners are just stupid beyond belief and are pretty crap owners to be honest. I love dogs, I have two myself but you need to understand their limitations not treat them as appendages that think the same as you. I do not take my dogs to cafes or shops as it isn't fair on them.

It doesn't matter how many 'cute' GIFs are posted by recurrent posters who jump on these threads there is a real problem with dog control in this country and people and dogs are getting hurt.

But there is that chance the dogs won't behave as you would like but you went in anyway.
