Pillocks on Facebook

I commented on an article about Trooping the Colour. A paper ran a rather unkind article about Kate Middleton looking rough. She didn't, it was an unflattering camera angle. There were some unpleasant comments amongst the mundane ones, dragging Meghan in when she wasn't there, and being rude about Camilla.

In response to one post (that wasn't horrible) I explained the difference between being born a princess (eg Anne) and having it as a title owing to marriage (eg Kate and Diana).

Someone wrote one word, sycophant.

I'm absolutely not and I'm not a royal fan, but I'm not against them either they're just there, just people. I'm not posting here to get into the rights and wrongs of the royal family or their titles etc, but about the weird comments. They clearly don't really know what sycophancy is.

A chap then wrote one word "triggered" and I said not to worry you'll soon get over it.

His reply was. . Oh arsehole you fat bint.

🤣🤣🤣

There's no photo of me that he could see to work out whether I'm fat or skinny! And arsehole? Is that an imperative? It makes no sense!

Seriously what do these people get out of this absolute tripe? What's the point of them following news stories to write one word and insults? It's bloody madness.

FB and Nextdoor are full of awful inarticulate people with very short fuses. That's why I never comment on public posts on either of them (only comment on friends post on FB). It's not worth it.

backinthebox · 16/06/2026 05:54

Every time you encounter someone like this, imagine they are Colin Robinson the energy vampire from What We Do In The Shadows. It will make you realise it is pointless wasting any of your own energy on them - it’s what they want you to do, don’t give them the satisfaction.

BelleEpoque27 · 16/06/2026 06:00

Facebook is absolutely full of bots, it's probably not even a real person. Dead Internet Theory is real.

If they're not bots, they're just people with anger problems and too much time on their hands. Arguing with randoms in Facebook comments is a complete waste of time.

Firetreev · 16/06/2026 06:06

Outwith local community pages and businesses on Facebook I'd hazard a guess that most Facebook posts these days are bots or cretins who've allowed themselves to be rage baited and radicalised by bots and propaganda. It's not worth engaging with at all.

TheHateUGive · 16/06/2026 06:12

It isnt much different here. Have you read any of the threads about the Royal Family?

This, in spades.

The intelligence of the average person has dropped like a stone in a couple of generations.

TheHateUGive · 16/06/2026 06:20

I was reading a thread today where a person said they dont mind male teachers in a nursery and another person responded that they must be okay with their child being sexually abused.

A couple of other people agreed.

hidingmynuts · 16/06/2026 06:30

It's not just on Facebook. I was called an "angry reactive nutter" on MN recently simply for politely disagreeing with someone.

I wasn't angry, I wasn't reactive, and I didn't respond in a confrontational, offensive or rude manner. The funny thing was that this came immediately after they had been extolling the virtues of relaxation and staying calm. It actually gave me a good chuckle 🤭

There is no point in engaging with such people, because they're not interested in discussion or debate. They've already decided that anyone who disagrees with them must be the problem. Once someone starts attacking the person rather than addressing the point being made, the discussion has effectively ended.

At that point, it's usually best to ignore them and move on. Life's too short to waste your precious energy arguing with strangers who are determined to misunderstand you and are so blinded by their own ignorance and stupidity that they cant accept other people choose to live differently to them.

Nextdoor is AWFUL. Slagging off local businesses and the very sweet and hardworking Evri delivery person. Throw in a bit of overt racism and there we are.

Shoola · 16/06/2026 06:41

People can be obsessively angry about the royal family, even on here. They will pick a fight with anyone.

Bananananna · 16/06/2026 07:02

comments sections of news articles, particularly on the local press facebook pages are pitiful places.
They also highlight the genuinely alarming illiteracy rates in this country.

My Nextdoor has people wading in with horrible comments when they haven't even read the OP properly and have not grasped what it's even about. I can't believe these people walk among us.

A random man on Facebook once told me I work at McDonald's and that being a feminist is the reason no man wants me. I had commented on a post about ancient Sparta.
I'm still not sure why he was so upset.

Thebinisrightthere · 16/06/2026 08:13

I saw a disgusting thread on Fb last night, probably a "suggestion" of someone I might like, who ripped to shreds a woman football presenter. Saying she was fat, ugly, how nobody would touch her with a barge pole etc. Yet nobody mentioned any of the men funnily enough. Horrible to think those same men commenting are husbands, fathers, sons etc

🤣
I once commented on a George Michael FB group how much I loved him and that when I was 15 I wanted to marry him. I got really scolded by someone for that who helpfully informed me that he was actually gay and wouldnt have been remotely interested in me at all. The shock- who would have thought George Michael was gay? 🤣

People are nuts, aren't they? I had a crush on Billy Idol when I was 15. Shock horror, he didn't even know I existed 🤣.

I've noticed on local Facebook pages, some men are far ruder to women posters than they would be to a man. At least you can use a nickname now. I'll probably do that if I want to post anything

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 16/06/2026 08:56

It will generally be men. They will generally find a misogynistic trope to throw at you in the hope that it hurts. Fat, bitch, ugly etc
What I rather enjoy doing is ensuring I get the last word by writing something pithy/scathing and then blocking them so I never see their reply. I then forever have the last word even if they’re wildly blustering a few hours later 🤣

I once commented on the video for I Want to Break Free saying how brilliant it was, I then got a pm from some nut job who I can only assume was homophobic. Let's just say it was far from complimentary 🙄

These bams have always walked amongst us SM has given them a tool to air that stupidity.

I re during the vote for Brexit one idiot I met on a bus genuinely thought benefits would increase because of less foreign people.🤯

Gardenisablooming · 16/06/2026 08:59

Precisely why I only browse the ads... Seeing ones for chester draws reassures me my time is best spent on mn!!

UserNineNine · 16/06/2026 09:01

I always just assume that the comments underneath these news articles or other post on Facebook are there to gather details of people who are quick to react, bored and not very aware of how the internet works so that Nigerian princes and other catfish types can exploit them.

FuckYouAndYourEggAndSpoonRace · 16/06/2026 09:06

There's no cure for people.

Facebook is a den of pillocks.

Sample from my local Facebook page.
1st Poster - Hello, I does anyone have a bathroom cabinet they don't want any more?
2nd Poster - Yes please, I would love your unwanted bathroom cabinet.
1st Poster - No, I don't have one. I want one.
2nd Poster - How big is it?
1st Poster - I don't have one. I'm looking for one.
2nd Poster - Oh I see. Can you deliver?
1st Poster - Look! I don't have one?
2nd Poster - Why are you advertising then? Timewaster!!
