Very sore throat after repeated vomiting from a hangover, any tips?

I’ve been extremely hungover today (which has been awful and I am seriously done with drinking for a while). I am not exaggerating when I say this but in the space of about 13 hours I’ve been sick at least 10 times I reckon (and it hasn’t just been once each time, I’ve actually vommed about 3-4 times on average). Most of it has been yellow bile.

I am feeling more human now thank god but it hurts so much to swallow, it’s awful. I am trying to sip water but it’s not helping. I think I may have damaged my throat / oesophagus from all of the vomiting.

Does anyone have any tips on how to soothe it? I’ve for some ice cream which I might try eating. If it’s no better tomorrow morning I think I’ll call my GP.

It will be the stomach acid. Just give it time.

the80sweregreat · 14/06/2026 15:13

Lots of water and maybe some sweets for your throat or soother type sweets if you have any around. It may help. Some plain food later on.
Im sure it’ll pass , once you get some sleep.
Sounds like alcohol poisoning, it is rough but you will feel better soon.

If it's the top of your throat, you can get difflam over the counter from a chemist. If lower down, gaviscon may well help. It's the stomach acid, and the physical action of the retching.

Incidentally, bile is actually dark green. When you're vomiting yellow, it's stomach acid.

I have projectile vomiting with migraines and I sympathise hugely with the repeated vomiting! I tend to eat very neutral or alkaline things afterwards - milk, ice cream stuff like that, and the coolness of ice cream is soothing. It sorts itself out quite quickly so you hopefully won't suffer for too long.

the80sweregreat · 14/06/2026 15:30

Ice cream for your throat is a good call if you have some.

tanstaafl · 14/06/2026 15:33

Warm water and honey, stirred in.

mynameiscalypso · 14/06/2026 15:35

Ice lollies have saved me in similar circumstances

Chipsahoy · 14/06/2026 15:39

Treat like a normal sore throat. You’ve likely damaged the lining. It will heal with time.

Ladamesansmerci · 14/06/2026 15:44

It will heal. Most of us have been there. You don't need to see your GP lol. Just keep drinking plenty of water, rest, and eat things like ice-cream or other things that will soothe it.

Freeze a bottle of water and sip the cold water as it melts. Ibuprofen tablets or (never take ibuprofen and aspirin together) dispersible aspirin to gargle. This will help with pain and inflammation.

I would avoid eating anything irritant. So hot food, spicy food, anything acidic or anything sharp or firm. Stock up on ice lollies, smooth yoghurt (good with honey), smooth soups to eat cool etc.

Cocodamol can be used with either of the above painkillers and used to help pain but also will suppress coughs which you may get with a bad throat. After I had my tonsils out I needed this to help be sleep. Be wary it contains paracetamol and not to double up in that.

I’ve just never had this before after other awful hangovers. It feels like I am swallowing nails 😢

Jesus how much did you drink? 😳

I agree with the cold things suggestion. You've burned your throat with stomach acid. I would be very concerned about the level of vomiting tbh.

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/06/2026 19:44

Just time, it’ll be ok. Focus on some sleep, it’s the best thing to let your body recover

WellINeverKnewThat1 · 14/06/2026 19:45

Right so is that irreparable damage then?

To be honest I had no food and I was drinking Prosecco. I also suffer from migraines and I think when combined with a hangover I get awful vomiting. I am not looking to be judged, I’m just in pain.

“would be very concerned about the level of vomiting tbh.”

What does that mean? There is nothing OP can do but wait for it to feel better, what’s the point in saying you’d be very concerned? That’s hardly going to help her hangxiety.

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/06/2026 19:46

Btw don’t call your Gp they’ll think you’re mental 🤣

How would I know? I'm not a doctor. I'm a random online.

I would be concerned if I'd vomited 10 times in the last 13 hours. Wouldn't you?

Ki0612 · 14/06/2026 19:52

Sip milk when you think you won't be sick again.

But what does that actually mean?

if I had a terrible hangover I would accept puking 10 times in 13 hours. I wouldn’t enjoy it but I have no idea what you mean by “terribly concerned”?!

How is the idea of concern hard to grasp?

It would be highly unusual for me to vomit that much. It would worry me. I would be concerned about it. Even if I suspected the reason why.

Well here’s the thing. I don’t reckon you would “be concerned” (meaning nothing but what- a few hours worry?) and you’re just trying to make the OP feel worried in some spurious undefined way.

And what on earth would I get out of that. I made a statement about how I would feel about it. I would be very concerned. It would be highly unusual for me.

Sorry op, its totally normal to drink so much you vomit for a full 13 hours. It's all good. No damage done at all. You do you girl. #yolo

evilharpy · 14/06/2026 20:25

Glass of milk might soothe your throat, if you can stomach it?

Theseagullsarenowclouds · 14/06/2026 20:37

Throwing up 10 times in 13hrs is bad. Really bad. A hangover usually just chucks it all back up in the early hours and you're left to feel awful for a day or two.
This sounds like something else.
