Putting a king size duvet in sideways really does work

I read ages ago that a king size duvet is meant to go into the cover sideways rather than lengthways.
I thought this idea was a bit daft and forgot about it.
Yesterday whilst changing the bed I remembered it and decided to give it a whirl.
Ye Gods!
It bloody worked.
No more one freezing exposed arm because the duvet doesn’t quite fit over me when my husband hogs a lot of it unintentionally.
No more trying to hoick up the duvet that hangs over the bottom of the bed because of the length back on to the top for more warmth.
Plenty of spare duvet covering both of us and a lovely coziness all night long.
I was quite amazed.

some duvets have rows of stitching from head to foot end.
some duvets have rows of stitching from side to side.

if you put the duvet into the cover and have spare cover flapping about at the sides and bumphled up at the bottom, youve put your duvet into the cover the wrong way.

so if it’s lengthwise stitching on the duvet, take it out and put it back into the duvet cover with it’s stitching going across the way and it should fit better.

once you know what way it fits best remember it!!! my label is at the bottom right. that’s how i remember. your could be somewhere else. or mark the duvet with some coloured stitching or pen or something to help you remember.

I can't put my duvet in the cover sideways because it has a zip down the middle (to allow each person to have a different tog duvet).

Surely the long side of the duvet goes along the long side of the duvet cover?

Mine isn’t bumphled (good word!) at the bottom but there are still flat sections at the side. Hence my confusion.

Wow I am so confused now that I measured my king sized duvet - it's a square! So I guess there's no right and wrong way into the duvet cover at least! 😅

So the duvet cover poppers/buttons go down the side rather than the bottom?! That doesn’t sound right? We have a super king and the bottom of the duvet is where the label is (and clearly indicated), and the buttons of the duvet line up with that.

It shouldn't;t be, A UK standard kingsize duvet should be 220cm (along the side) x 230cm (along the bottom).

Although as per previous post a kingsized bed should have a superking duvet in order to look its best (220 x 260) since this will then allow the duvet to hang nicely down the sides of the bed.

The only square duvet UK Size is a double which is 120 x 120.

The long edge of a duvet always runs along the bottom of the bed (as do the poppers) unless you have a single bed.

My DM said if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all. …………..

It always infuriates me that king size duvets aren't square. WHY do they need to be 10cm longer on one side than the other? An extra 10cm on the shorter side would make sod all difference and mean you never need to think about which way is right

what, you're going to put this to the test by putting the duvet cover on the correct way rather than the wrong way? I can confirm without you even putting it to the test that it will be better to do it the correct way than the wrong way.

2 double duvets in their own covers is even better…

I don't think this would work with some of the duvet covers I have. They'd then have to go sideways and the prints would be the wrong way.

I think I have been doing it wrong as well OP... I always wondered why there often seemed to be so much bunching up!

My king size duvet in 220x225 and I’ve no idea which side is the long side 🤣
Each of my covers seems to fit it a different way round. So sometimes the duvet label at the bottom, sometimes at the side. I can never remember which fits which way. Only one cover is such an exact fit that it actually matters though.

So where does a single duvet belong? 🤔

Err, yes.

You will know before trying that to put a duvet in the wrong way (so that it is bunched up along one edge and lacking stuffing along another edge) will be worse than putting it in the correct way so that the duvet and the duct cover match up perfectly and every part of the duvet cover has the correct amount of duvet in it.

Why don’t you have your duvet cover inside out, put your hands inside to the top corners, grab your duvet through the inside out duvet cover then pull it over the duvet so it turns it right way round as it covers the duvet, much easier than the stuffing method.

Aesthetically we size up duvets for styling reasons. It just looks better (and ensures there are no duvet wars).

Most of the time kids are the ones using single beds and so they are fine with single duvets.

Tried putting it in sideways as recommended on here previously, it doesn't work
