Putting a king size duvet in sideways really does work

I read ages ago that a king size duvet is meant to go into the cover sideways rather than lengthways.
I thought this idea was a bit daft and forgot about it.
Yesterday whilst changing the bed I remembered it and decided to give it a whirl.
Ye Gods!
It bloody worked.
No more one freezing exposed arm because the duvet doesn’t quite fit over me when my husband hogs a lot of it unintentionally.
No more trying to hoick up the duvet that hangs over the bottom of the bed because of the length back on to the top for more warmth.
Plenty of spare duvet covering both of us and a lovely coziness all night long.
I was quite amazed.

God I hate changing the duvet cover! Such a faff. Doesn’t really matter which way round it is- only me in a king size bed (which I love- hate sleeping with other people!).

There’s a difference of 10cm or so, I just shove the fucker in any which way and it never looks wrong.

I don't think this would work with some of the duvet covers I have. They'd then have to go sideways and the prints would be the wrong way.

If you have the fastenings at the bottom of the bed the cover will be the right way around. Putting the duvet in the correct way won't alter that?

That 4 inches of loose cover.

I kind of thought I was. I always put the duvet in portrait as I thought that's how it fits the duvet cover, but looking at that link someone posted earlier, it looks like it should go in landscape (sideways). I'll give it a go.

My mind is blown! how is this even a thing? My duvet goes in with the stiched lines going across as thats how it should go? it fits perfectly into my duvet cover with no flappy or bunched up bits and the buttons at the bottom of the bed. I didn't realise so many people had no idea how to put a duvet into a cover?! 😂

littlemousebigcheese · 12/06/2026 18:12

I’m so confused

OH MY GOD NO! 😱

MrsCarson · 12/06/2026 18:23

I think I'll have a go at this see if it works better on my bed.

thinkfast · 12/06/2026 18:48

I’m really confused by all this lengthwise talk…. The duvet has a label to show you which end goes at the bottom of the bed. As does the duvet cover (although the buttons/poppers/zip) is also at the end 90% of the time.

trainedopossum · 12/06/2026 18:56

Our duvet has diamond stitching (so no obvious direction) and I put it in the wrong way for years. OP like you I had an epiphany when I tried it the other way and it’s so satisfying seeing it fit correctly.

I can’t back this up but iirc IKEA bedding was slightly different than standard and I wonder if this is why I became acclimatised to the duvet fitting slightly oddly in the cover.

Just to really blow your mind OP you should always size up (for aesthetic reasons). So for a kingsized bed you should actually have a superking duvet.

Edited

So does that mean for a double duvet cover that you should buy a king-size duvet?

MissyPants · 12/06/2026 19:05

You use a duvet one size up from your cover.
I have a double and I use a king duvet, it fills it nice & plump.
Not sure what to do if you have the biggest bed on the planet tho, guess you'd be screwed.

Doesn’t it curl up at the edges? The only thing I dislike more than an empty bit of duvet cover is a rolled up edge of duvet or a bit that has folded up in the middle.
This thread is making me want to go upstairs and shake my duvet out until it’s sitting dead centre in the cover.

No, it doesn't curl up at the edges, it just feels very thick and plump/plush.
Hotels do it with their duvets. Have you ever noticed in bedding shops how their duvet covers/displays on beds never look like your bed at home even if you buy the same cover, the shop one always looks better. it's a trick of the trade, try it, you won't be disappointed.

MissyPants · 13/06/2026 00:21

Report back once you've tried it!

VermicularCanister · 13/06/2026 13:24

OP, I want to thank you for starting this thread. I'm another one who had no idea that king size duvets were not exactly square.

To answer PPs about how so many people have no idea how to put on a duvet cover - I learned to do this with a single duvet which quite probably had stitching lines running lengthwise, and then with a double I followed my imaginary (and incorrect) rule of stitching lines running head to foot. By the time I upgraded to a king size, I didn't think there was anything more I needed to learn. I just assumed it was a failing of my fairly low-budget bedding that nothing quite fitted exactly.

It's been mentioned that king size is 230x220 cm, but having checked several brands the standard sizing seems to be 225x220 cm. I'm sure I would have checked for squareness at some point by folding mine into a triangle, but for a large and bulky winter duvet with slightly rounded corners, a 5cm difference would lead me to the conclusion that my folding was slightly off and the duvet was square (because nothing else would make any sense), and not that it had been manufactured with one edge 5cm longer than the other.

It's such a stupid difference, because it's just enough for it to be ill-fitting with the sides empty of duvet and the top and bottom ends very slightly bunched up, but not so bad that it's immediately obvious what's wrong.

Anyway I have now enjoyed a night's sleep where the top edge of the duvet was not annoyingly bulky, and I could pull the duvet across by grabbing a plump edge instead of a sad bit of empty cover. Thanks OP!

Samewrinklesnewname · 11/06/2026 09:57

I spent forever putting it in the cover with the stitching on the duvet running top to bottom and it was never quite right.
a couple of years ago I turned it 90° so the stitching runs left to right and it fits like a glove…only took about 50 years to work it out 😂

Stitching is always supposed to go horizontal, that's the right way. If people are putting their duvets in duvet covers with the lines going vertical that's why there is a problem

But surely they mostly have both horizonal and vertical stitching, so that the filling is typically in squarish 'pockets'?

No duvets I've ever had in any size, always just 1 line of stitching

WomanSubjectFucksVerbManObject · 13/06/2026 13:46

Surely there's no "lengthways" and "sideways"???

Surely there's the right way (that fits) and the wrong way (that doesn't)?

Confused

@Bringflowersofthefairest

How do you cope this this?

Putting a king size duvet in sideways really does work
Shatteredallthetimelately · 13/06/2026 13:51

I've got a double bed but use a king size duvet/cover, and yes I still put the duvet in sideways. Plenty of overhang.
