Budget airlines time pass

What do you do to pass the time on a budget airline flight when there's no WiFi?

OP posts:

Downloads films/podcasts before you go and watch/listen with headphones.

Read a book

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 06/06/2026 12:18

Watch a film I've downloaded, read my book, the same as I would do on a flight with wifi

On a long haul BA flight I will use in flight entertainment.

Also books, tablets and Spotify exist. That’s what most people do.

Civilsociety · 06/06/2026 12:24

Read a book, or a newspaper.

What is that? Something on a screen? Can’t you just download something onto your own device?

Where it's carried it usually consists of a TV screen (often on the seat back in front of you) and some form of control with which you to select and play films/videos/sometimes audio such as records from the selection held on board the aircraft..

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 06/06/2026 12:55

Sleep. Catching up with it. I normally book an early flight, which means that I’ve probably not slept much, if at all. Depends on the flight time too. If it’s a late flight I will have a little drink and a snack, force myself to actually talk to my family. Although, Ryanair was fun when we weren’t sat together. I was talking to strangers 😂

redboxerclub · 06/06/2026 12:57

Well depends how long it is? A nap a film a game conversation? If it’s more than 2 hours I’ll probably download something.

Rujhf · 06/06/2026 12:58

It's to Istanbul.

i fly long haul at a lot and I rarely use the IFE.

I download films and shows to my phone so I’m guaranteed I can watch what I want.

i also do this on Ryanair!

Rujhf · 06/06/2026 13:03

I've done shorter trips at around the 2.5 hour mark and I tend to just sleep.

I don't want to spend the entire flight on my phone because I don't want the battery to go.

Take a power pack.
Alternatively read a book or magazine

Well on a short haul BA there’s no entertainment, and WiFi is sketchy anyway on all flights? Everyone I know pre downloads music, podcasts and films, brings books.

TheCurious0range · 06/06/2026 13:06

There's rarely much I want to watch on in flight entertainment so I always read, listen to music or watch something I downloaded before taking off

cestlavielife · 06/06/2026 13:06

Go to airport wh smith. Buy "take a break" or "hello" . Read.

You can replicate that with your own phone or tablet. Download a few films and TV shows, bring a book or kindle to read on and that's the same a sthe in flight entertainment.

I do exactly the same, download a few podcast to my phone and a couple of episodes of a programme to my iPad, and take a book and a power bank.

Many airlines have stopped allowing power banks to be used on board. EasyJet definitely don’t allow them now.

EstrellaPolar · 06/06/2026 13:13

I’m a frequent flier. I read, watch a show downloaded on my tablet, do a photo gallery clear out (best way to pass that last hour of the flight), do some work.

I will only use WiFi for instant messaging apps, it never works for anything else anyway. A friend of mine brings her knitting. I’ve also been known to mend a shirt while flying as I always carry some thread and needle in my bag. There are plenty of ways to pass the time, regardless of the airline.

(PS the in-flight entertainment for BA is pretty shit and I can’t wait for the day airlines allow you to connect your own noise-cancelling headphones to the seat back screens.)

MirrorMirror1247 · 06/06/2026 13:13

I usually have a doze while listening to Spotify on short budget airline flights. I've only done one long haul trip, but I used the IFE then since it was such a novelty to me! I particularly liked the map showing where the plane was.

You can use them right up to boarding, and as soon as you’re off the plane. They charge a device pretty fast, as long as they’re genuine technology and not cheap stuff off temu. Alternatively, you can also charge your phone from your iPad, if carrying one, and that hasn’t been banned yet.

Which is why I don't want to spend 4 hours on my phone
