Budget airlines time pass

What do you do to pass the time on a budget airline flight when there's no WiFi?

Many airlines have stopped allowing power banks to be used on board. EasyJet definitely don’t allow them now.

Agreed.

There have been a few changes around this issue recently and there's a lot of variation in rules (different airlines, different risk assessments) so it's worth checking conditions of carriage.

I've done shorter trips at around the 2.5 hour mark and I tend to just sleep.

I don't want to spend the entire flight on my phone because I don't want the battery to go.

Why can’t you just read a book?!

pambeesleyhalpert · 06/06/2026 13:36

Read a book

I watch a lot of documentaries about geopolitics and history. I watch sport.

I prefer audio books because I like hearing the author read their book to me.

I read, do some cross stitch or crochet, have a nap, have a book of puzzles, chat to whoever I’m with. It’s not a hugely long time to entertain yourself without a screen, if you’re worried about battery charge.

cestlavielife · 06/06/2026 13:05

Take a power pack.
Alternatively read a book or magazine

A lot of airline (Inc budget airlines) will now not allow battery packs to be used whilst in the air. You can have them in your hand luggage (they aren't allowed in the hold) but you aren't allowed to use them.

Check each individual airlines restrictions. I think Ryanair are more relaxed but I think easyJet are one of the more strict.

I personally try and sleep on flights as much as I can, otherwise I read.

ColdinHTK · 06/06/2026 14:08

I watch a couple of downloaded movies and I’m always surprised it hasn’t drained the battery much.
But a battery pack can be used after you land to charge your phone again.

This reads like a parody question. Do you really not know how to survive twelve hours in transit without WiFi?

Read, sleep, think, daydream - you could tell yourself it's a "digital detox" if it makes it easier psychologically.

HaveYouFedTheFish · 06/06/2026 14:17

I opened this thinking this was some fresh hell in which budget airlines have invented a way to sell time on the plane (a time pass) so that customers become responsible for paying extra in the case of delays rather than being compensated - so at least that was just my dystopian imagination running away with me, for now 🫣.

Why can’t you do that on the plane too? (Minus the live sport I guess)

LlynTegid · 06/06/2026 15:35

This is a sad thread if genuinely someone has no idea what to do if without a phone or tablet for a few hours.

If a book you consider expensive, try getting one from a book exchange, or perhaps even buy a newspaper to read.

eurochick · 06/06/2026 16:06

As others have said - watch / listen to downloaded content, read a book or ebook, chat, etc.

I last flew with easyJet about a month ago and it was fine to use a power bank to recharge a device then. You just couldn’t have them in hold luggage.

Audiobooks use very little battery so there you go, problem solved.

mynameiscalypso · 06/06/2026 16:09

A phone on airplane mode shouldn’t use much battery if you’re just listening to downloaded podcasts or audiobooks.

Some of us have really old phones 😂

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 06/06/2026 16:16

Read a book, listen to a podcast, knit.

@eurochick

I think it's a very recent change but it is definitely now forbidden...C&P from the prohibited articles/dangerous goods section of Easyjet's website

  • Power banks are prohibited from use on easyJet aircraft and must not be used to charge other devices.

AFAIK Ryanair, BA etc still allow them to be used in flight but even those airlines have recently changed some details about precisely where powerbanks can be carried (e.g. not in overhead locker).

mindutopia · 06/06/2026 16:56

I rarely use in flight entertainment on long haul flights as I don’t really like films. So on both, I read, eat, do some work, sleep, watch a series I’ve downloaded to my phone, or listen to a podcast, etc.

labradorservant · 06/06/2026 17:27

Istanbul isn’t that long haul either… if you have an iPad download stuff on that. Read. Or check if the airline has USB sockets. BA generally do.
