Suggestions for family films for seven and nine year old boys

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 03/06/2026 18:33

Every Saturday we do family film night where we pick a film and all watch it together with mountains of snacks. We’ve been doing it since they were little, but we’re now at the age 7&9 where I’m struggling to find good films we’ll all enjoy.

They are mature for their age and have never sworn so I’m fairly relaxed about the odd swear word. Popular films have included:

Harry potter films
Free Guy
Ready Player One
The school for good and evil
spiderman
zombies - Disney series of films
descendants

we also watch tv together and they have loved
the simpsons
malcolm in the middle
friday night dinner
young Sheldon
stranger things

any suggestions on films on Netflix/prime/disney/now tv that would go down well.

Thanks but these are all cartoons, and a bit young. I’m looking for films more like the ones I’ve posted. Probably under the ‘family film’ category rather than kids films.

I wouldn't say any of those were too young for a 7 and 9 year old.

Thank you. We enjoyed watching the original Jumanji. They saw Witches at the cinema and thought it was good.
haven’t seen bedtime stories so will check that out.

The Goonies
Back to the Future
Crocodile Dundee
Indiana Jones
Uncharted

OttersOnAPlane · 03/06/2026 18:44

There is NOTHING wrong with animated film at any age. All those listed are great family films.

See also The Iron Giant, Stuart Little - oh, and the Series Of Unfortunate Events series rather than film

Great suggestions thank you. I’ve seen these but we haven’t as a family so definitely adding them to my list.

Indeed. OP, maybe watch these absolute classics, that adults enjoy as well, before you decide they're "too young" for your 7 and 9 year old?!

How to Train Your Dragon has a life action version I believe.
Have they watched any Studio Ghibli?
Yes they are animation but they are amazing.
My favourite Ghibli films are Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro.

CarolCave · 03/06/2026 18:45

Apologies I don’t know whether these are on those streamers but we’ve enjoyed older gems like Cool Runnings, ET, Mrs Doubtfire and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

caringcarer · 03/06/2026 18:45

Herbie films.

Sunshineclouds11 · 03/06/2026 18:46

Hook
Mrs Doubtfire
The mask
home alone
Willy wonka (the old one)

old school but always been favourites of mine from being a child

Err I didn’t say there was anything wrong with animated films, it just wasn’t what I was looking for.
they enjoy animated films which we take them to see at the cinema but when I sit down on a Saturday night I really don’t want to watch an animated film. (Although I do love Wallace and Gromit which sits somewhere in between)

My 7 year old loves Studio Ghibli, my neighbour Totoro is her fave.

Also she really enjoyed school of rock
Ghostbusters afterlife
Captain Marvel
The karate Kid
Turning red
We watched Enola Holmes last weekend, she really enjoyed that.

MyDuvetDay · 03/06/2026 18:50

Night at the Museum
School of Rock
Hook

UserNineNine · 03/06/2026 18:53

Bugsy Malone
Indian in my Cupboard
Pirates on Penzance

OttersOnAPlane · 03/06/2026 18:54

@Needmorelego there is, but it's not nearly as good as the originals. (See also almost every live action remake)

Mathilda is a cracking live action for any age. Spy Kids series is a good shout. Flight Of The Navigator and ET as well

Of the Ghiblis my kids voted Ponyo, Arriety (The Borrowers) and Kiki's Delivery Service. DH votes for Howl's Moving Castle.

But obviously if the OP can't see the value in "cartoons" there's not much point

hadagreattimeattheranch · 03/06/2026 18:54

Jumanji
cool runnings
it takes two (with the Olsen twins)
parent trap
pirates of the Caribbean
lord of the rings
the hobbit
All the live action Disney remake. Jungle book, beauty and the beast etc

Look I get that people like animated films but I’ve seen them all (many many times) - that’s the bonus of the boys being older, I can enjoy something that isn’t a film about raining meatballs!
