Suggestions for family films for seven and nine year old boys

Every Saturday we do family film night where we pick a film and all watch it together with mountains of snacks. We’ve been doing it since they were little, but we’re now at the age 7&9 where I’m struggling to find good films we’ll all enjoy.

They are mature for their age and have never sworn so I’m fairly relaxed about the odd swear word. Popular films have included:

Harry potter films
Free Guy
Ready Player One
The school for good and evil
spiderman
zombies - Disney series of films
descendants

we also watch tv together and they have loved
the simpsons
malcolm in the middle
friday night dinner
young Sheldon
stranger things

any suggestions on films on Netflix/prime/disney/now tv that would go down well.

Percy Jackson?

Mightymaniac1 · 03/06/2026 21:52

Not sure if anyone has suggested the pirates of the Caribbean?

oliviaAustin · 03/06/2026 22:03

Bridge to Terabithia
The Golden Compass
The Spiderwick Chronicles

My very nearly 7 year old has really enjoyed The Pacifier recently (disney+), and he watched Yes Day (Netflix) 3 times in one weekend 😂

Others he has watched and enjoyed in the last few months:

Night at the Museum
Goosebumps
Christmas Again
Daddy Daycare
Family Switch
Beethoven
Little Rascals
Casper
IF
Minecraft
Sonic (all of them!)

They are still quite young so stuff without too much graphic danger might still interest them and you could enjoy it too. I’m thinking of classic Saturday night excitement from the 80s/90s like the A team or MacGyver. Exciting but not overtly dangerous? Dukes of Hazzard? That sort of thing would be fun for little boys?

Of films that I’ve not seen mentioned My boys loved Earth to Echo

Undethetree · 03/06/2026 22:12

My kids (8-12) love the Jonny English films.
They also love the Jim Carey films - Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber and Liar Liar.

ODFOx · 03/06/2026 22:16

Daddy DayCare and Daddy Daycamp. Hilarious for little boys. Especially the latter, as it’s heavy on toilet humour.

BakingQueen14 · 03/06/2026 22:20

The Kid who Would be King is on Disney currently.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 03/06/2026 22:24

My 9 year old recently loved Men in Black and Independence Day.
Lots of great ideas on here. Fully agree about the animations, I'm delighted to be moving away from that stage.

AgnesMcDoo · 03/06/2026 22:26

Marvel films and Star Wars films

staybyyou · 03/06/2026 22:33

Similar ages here and they like Mr Beans Holiday, Little Rascals, Fly away home, Homeward Bound, Madeline, Baby’s day out, Hook, Ritchie Rich.

FruityFrog · 03/06/2026 22:35

Home. One of the best kids films I've ever seen and amazing sound track.

giemepeace · 03/06/2026 23:10

I’m also ready to not be completely wedded to animation! ET was a great hit for us recently. Gremlins, not so much 😣. I’m definitely going to get some of these on. Only one I can think of that hasn’t been mentioned is Yes Day, we all enjoyed that.

moonisblue · 03/06/2026 23:33

Paulie is good fun
Spy Kids
Galaxy Quest

Fiddlesticks1 · 04/06/2026 07:42

John Candy films.

My kids (8-12) love the Jonny English films.
They also love the Jim Carey films - Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber and Liar Liar.

Mine (10 and 12) absolutely loved the Jonny English film and I was surprised to find they were a lot better than I'd expected!

They've enjoyed lots of others on here, particularly National Treasure, School of Rock, Parent Trap and Free Guy.

A slight note of caution though - my kids are very mature for their age but I do think as parents we have a tendency to rose-tint some of the films we watched as kids (perfectly naturally)...my husband thought The Goonies would be a big hit but had forgotten the initial hanging scene and the guy locked in the basement, both of which my 9-yr old (at the time) found a bit much. I'm a bit more cautious but I've noticed my husband has hugely sanitised, in his head, every single film he watched as a kid/teen as he's so excited to watch them with ours! Parents are of course best placed to judge but personally I'm happy to stick with a good dose of kid-oriented animation now as I know in years to come I'll miss it 😃

Some good suggestions on here! How about Pixels with Adam Sandler? DS loved that film! Comedy sci-fi.

We had the same reaction with the Goonies and turned it off. There were a few others which I can’t remember where I thought ‘blimey times have definitely changed’ - but then my friends and I used to watch Chucky and nightmare on elm street when were were far too young.

i rewatched Dodgeball by myself the other week as I remember it being really funny, but again I’m not convinced it’s aged well.
