Suggestions for family films for seven and nine year old boys

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 03/06/2026 18:33

Every Saturday we do family film night where we pick a film and all watch it together with mountains of snacks. We’ve been doing it since they were little, but we’re now at the age 7&9 where I’m struggling to find good films we’ll all enjoy.

They are mature for their age and have never sworn so I’m fairly relaxed about the odd swear word. Popular films have included:

Harry potter films
Free Guy
Ready Player One
The school for good and evil
spiderman
zombies - Disney series of films
descendants

we also watch tv together and they have loved
the simpsons
malcolm in the middle
friday night dinner
young Sheldon
stranger things

any suggestions on films on Netflix/prime/disney/now tv that would go down well.

Oliver! DS loves it so much we took him to see if in the west end.
The twits, Matilda, school of rock, have you seen the BBC famous five adaptations? We've enjoyed them as a family. Not a film but we also watch race across the world together

This thread has also reminded me of how much I loved cool runnings when I was a child and ds hasn't seen it yet....

I also loved Cool Runnings and we haven’t watched so I’m definitely adding it to the list.

Mine are slightly older (12 & 9) and girls but they loved the Bourne movies! They might be a bit old for the 7 year old thought! Also the National Treasure movies and the Meg movies.
I'll assume you've seen the Jurassic park movies.

GameOfJones · 03/06/2026 19:02

I have a 9 and 7 year old and they have loved:

Bridge to Terabithia
Willow
The Neverending Story
Labyrinth
The Princess Bride
The Black Cauldron
Jumanji
Night at the Museum
The Wild Robot

For series they've also really enjoyed Merlin on iPlayer and the new live action One Piece on Netflix.

Loved all the Paddington films (to the point we’ve probably over watched a bit, but then again I never get sick of them).

Thanks for the great suggestions, I haven’t seen most of these so all good choices for us to try!

The older one has seen the Meg and enjoyed it. Jurassic films weren’t much of f a hit for some reason.

they do like the Godzilla verses kong series and thankfully they keep making so many.

I'd leave The Princess Bride for a couple of years so the 7 year old can appreciate it.

How about His Dark Materials series on iPlayer? Eddie The Eagle film as a companion piece to Cool Runnings? I expected it to be terrible but it was fun with added Hugh Jackman.

High School Musicals are fun, and my lads liked The Greatest Showman too.

My 6 and 8 year olds have enjoyed:
Honey I shrunk the kids
Home alone
The parent trap
Mary Poppins
Sound of music
All the star wars films
Narnia films

My 8 year old loves the Percy Jackson series on Disney+ , not films but very enjoyable series. She so loved hocus Pocus

The Sandlot Kids was my favourite as a kid. It’s called The Sandlot in the US. Really fun!

Back to the Future was popular with our kids and The Princess Bride.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/06/2026 19:19

My DDs favourite film at that age was a silly film called Run Spot Run, it is quite funny.

ET.

There’s another one that is a bit like jumanji, about 2 brothers who play a game and end up in outer space, it’s got the girl from Twilight in (I’ve totally forgotten what it’s called.)

Mightymaniac1 · 03/06/2026 19:20

We loved Hocus Pocus - proper nostalgia for me rewatching it.

I didn’t think of the Narnia films, that’s a great shout!

Lots of love for the Princess Bride, which was also one of my favourites. My favourite Christmas film is A Castle for Christmas just because it has the wonderful Cary Elwes in.

thank you to everyone for the great suggestions. Lovely to see so many classics like back to the future and cool runnings listed.

We love our movie nights too although my son is now 11. I too was pretty fed up of animated films so I think these are more the sort of thing you're after. They're mostly 12s but you say they're mature and have seen Stranger Things so these should be ok.

Jungle Cruise
Ghostbusters
The Matrix
Johnny English
Now You See Me
Maze Runner
Night at the Museum
Are We There Yet
Divergent series
The Day after Tomorrow
War of the Worlds
Transformers (including Transformers One which is animated but actually good)
Avatar
Sonic
Central Intelligence
Mission Impossible
Godzilla vs Kong
Men In Black
Hunger Games
Goosebumps (film with Jack Black and also a series on Disney+ with David Schwimmer)
Guardians of the Galaxy
Thor
Iron Man
