@mumofoneAloneandwell "A yard is a foot imo"

A yard might be a foot "in your opinion" but in the very real world of metrology it is 3 feet.

I dont really know what you want me to do with this? Read the thread, I've already said 'okay'

i had a rolf Harris album as a child that had the song Jake the Peg on it. So I learnt from a young age that three feet make a yard

I was just going to say this (if mentioning his name doesn’t get you deleted),

”I was never a natural scholar, I found all the lessons hard.
The only thing I knew for sure is that three feet make a yard.
To count to ten, I used my fingers, and if I needed more,
By taking my shoes and socks off, I could count to twenty-four. (Whispered counting) count to twenty-five.”

lucysmam · 31/05/2026 16:40

@titchy erm...yes, it's me 🤷‍♀️.

@FeliciaFancybottom I like your answer 🤣.

I am not the wrong one btw...the wrong person is convinced that a 6 yard box on a footy pitch is not as long as I got the tape measure out to prove it is. (I was actually working out how much weed killer to mix up!).

A yard is 3ft (36 inches)

I think about 91.5 cms.

Does anyone else remember having a ruler with both inches & cms?

12 inches/30cms but they weren't quite equal.

Surely (most? all?) rulers still have both inches and cms on them. Certainly the ones that I have used in recent weeks have both.
As a child of the 70s, assiduously schooled in both, I use whichever happens to be not-upside-down when I am holding the ruler.

PickAChew · 31/05/2026 18:17

I definitely have rulers with cm and inches on, including both my steel rulers. Also my dressmaking tape measure.

Fast800goingforit · 31/05/2026 18:29

2m or 6ft was the social distancing malarkey during the pandemic. A metre is 39 inches so 6ft isn't quite as long as 2m.

Desordenado · 31/05/2026 15:12

It’s basically a metre, a yard of fabric and a metre of fabric are pretty much the same thing

Wow, I hope you never work for a haberdashers. A yard of fabric is 36 inches. A metre of fabric is approximately 39 inches.

I think you win the thread. A foot is 30.48 centimetres.

I do but I live in Germany now so wasn't sure if they were available.

SwayingInTime · 31/05/2026 18:48

I genuinely assumed this was going to be a do i have a yard or a garden question 🤔

I thought it might be football related. My dad regularly yells about people being '2 yards' offside when he clearly means 2 feet. I think football yards are different to standard ones 😆

AlbieJiggered · 31/05/2026 19:32

What sort of yard @lucysmam ? Schoolyard, farmyard, back yard, lanyard, ...?

lucysmam · 31/05/2026 19:34

@newrubylane he even measured 3 feet with his feet. And still disagreed with me. Maybe football yards are different to actual yards, who knew!

This is so ridiculous.

Are his feet an actual foot long though? Actually 12”?

lucysmam · 31/05/2026 20:16

With shoes, maybe, ish, if you squint a bit. Without, certainly not. His estimation of 6 yards was closer to 6 feet. Still doesn't believe me now 🤷‍♀️.

Football yards are the same as actual yards

@Coconutter24 I wasn't being serious, don't worry!

1 inch =2.54 centimetres
12 inches = 1 foot
1 yard = 3 feet

36 inches x 2.54cm = 91.54cm
