Only if the bath is emptying at a consistent rate, obviously.

I felt that went without saying.

A yard is a foot imo

So 12cm?

Er, no. A yard is three feet or 36 inches long.
Take your pick from previous replies as to how many centimeters there are in a yard, it appears to vary somewhat.

sanityisamyth · 31/05/2026 15:16

A foot isn’t 30cm.

That would explain it.

diddl · 31/05/2026 15:34

A yard is 3ft (36 inches)

I think about 91.5 cms.

Does anyone else remember having a ruler with both inches & cms?

12 inches/30cms but they weren't quite equal.

BreakingBroken · 31/05/2026 15:40

Well my yard is just over 10,000 square feet (so says the city who taxes me) It’s a bit of a weird shape so I’m not sure whose feet they were using.
But it’s big enough for my house and garden. Some sections are unusable too steep. It’s an okay yard.

macaroon8 · 31/05/2026 15:40

Easily googleable.

if I'm wanting accuracy I'll stick to either imperial or metric.

Depends how important accuracy is

If I wanted a yard of fabric and it was sold by the metre I'd buy a metre.
If I wanted a cupboard to fit in a space 3' wide but the cupboard I was looking at was 1m wide I'd not buy it coz I needed one that was 91.44cm and the 1m wide one would be too big.

Okay i dont know 😫😫

I dont use yards and have only heard it in reference to a crime scene, on GMB

Coconutter24 · 31/05/2026 15:45

Desordenado · 31/05/2026 15:12

It’s basically a metre, a yard of fabric and a metre of fabric are pretty much the same thing

You get roughly 10% more fabric with a meter, so no it’s not pretty much the same

JillThePlantKiller · 31/05/2026 15:46

3 feet so 36 inches, 90 ish cm, or a bit shy of a metre. It’s about the longest step I can take if I need a quick estimate of a space. I’d have to google for accuracy.

Coconutter24 · 31/05/2026 15:46

Why more answers the better? I think this thread proves it’s not better, judging by the answers given. Surely you just need a correct answer.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 31/05/2026 15:47

3 feet in a yard or 36 inches

InconsequentialFerret · 31/05/2026 15:49

Did you all know that those road signs that say yards are actually spaced in metres, and that the countdown signs on motorways are also 100m apart not 100 yards?

So if you were using them to measure yards, you'd make the kind of mistakes seen on this thread.

Oh well played, well played indeed.

It’s a rare treat to see such skilled and well-timed execution of Post Noon Orchard Amendment (1984), subsection 4: Unscheduled Appearances.

blackbirdsaresinging · 31/05/2026 15:54

Some yards are barely big enough to hang your washing out, but other yards are big enough for the kids to play football in.

Depends whether it’s southern or northern hemisphere, tho’

MaySheWillStay · 31/05/2026 16:02

Various rhyming couplets were publicised when England ‘went metric’.
I have taught them ever since, when conversion between imperial and metric has been on the syllabus.

Then one you want is
A metre measures 3 foot 3
It’s longer than a yard, you see.

If I wanted a yard of material I’d ask for 90cm.
90cm = 35.433 inches. A yard is 36”. Waste not.

edit: 3 foot 3 is poetic for 3 feet 3 inches.

PickAChew · 31/05/2026 16:11

About the length of the waist elastic I cut when I make trousers, which is conveniently about the width of my dining table.

curious79 · 31/05/2026 16:14

1 yard = 7 feet or or/ 2.5 furlongs or/ 1897.3 cm

amicisimma · 31/05/2026 16:18

It's 0.0004937365 of a nautical mile.

ginasevern · 31/05/2026 16:19

@mumofoneAloneandwell "A yard is a foot imo"

A yard might be a foot "in your opinion" but in the very real world of metrology it is 3 feet.

Floattheboats · 31/05/2026 16:21

i had a rolf Harris album as a child that had the song Jake the Peg on it. So I learnt from a young age that three feet make a yard
