What definitely looks like a carpet beetle to me. They are fairly harmless unless you've got wool carpets.

fancytoes · Yesterday 07:23

You’ve already been told but my first thought looking at the picture was carpet beetle! Hurrah!

minipoodlemum · Yesterday 07:25

100% not a bed bug, I could tell even from your first photo. Hope you got some sleep!

Planet Earth has lifeforms other than humans shocker.

"Will my shed get infected?"

Honestly, get a grip.

There are certain things you really don’t want to share a house with. If they are in your shed, they may end up in your house.

I’m a bit rabid about woodworm, having had an issue in my first home. Mum had some in her garage and was foolish imo, with how she disposed of it.

Bed bug infestation? No thanks. They and woodworm are worth going to great lengths to avoid.

Thanks I’m in uk yes
in Bournemouth

I’ve only got a rucksack
I don’t have a garage but I do have a shed ? So scared about bringing this home potentially
I’ve got 3 swimsuits delicate tops
so will I need to wash them in ultra high as not sure that material will take it

Put them in a bag in the freezer instead.

aquitodavia · Yesterday 07:42

That doesn't look like a bedbug to me, they're smaller than that.

katepilar · Yesterday 07:43

Its not a bed bug.
No need to worry about being infested.

katepilar · Yesterday 07:45

Why did you think it a bed bug? They look very different.

Feel better now?

Northermcharn · Yesterday 07:50

Urgh, sorry op. On the positive side - I don't think it is a bed bug. I got paranoid about them a few years ago, in Italy. Where there's one there will be more. A good way to double check is to have a look under the covers on the mattress and under the mattress. There will be loads of tiny white speckles (eggs) and tiny black speckle drops (poo) if there Are bed bugs.

Eta/ if anything it looks like a tick. Just wash it down the loo and check for anything else. It probably isn't a tick either as they're usually outdoors in long grass / forest etc.

You'll have to look up online on what to do (the instructions are fairly vast and rigorous) but, basically, you're going to have to wash everything at a high degree of heat and put your suitcases in the garage or somewhere similar.

I experienced this in Malta, years ago, and it means that I can never, ever go anywhere without this fear.

Are you in the UK?

Sorry this has happened. My DC was 9 years old, at the time, and it was traumatising for me. I'd never even seen a bedbug and the hotel employees told me it was "normal" in high heat countries and to use PifPaf insect killer on the mattress which is what I caught them doing the next day! Apparently, that has killed some people!

So, don't panic and just return home and manage everything.

If it helps, we never got bed bugs at the house and we've never had the problem since.

I'm going away this weekend so TBC!!!!

You'll be fine but I know it sucks!

Nah I disagree panic!

Leave everything there. When you get home undress on the doorstep and put those clothes in the outside bin , then set that on fire. Then go for a hot long shower and shave all your hair off. Then spray your house with that ultra pest killer stuff to be sure.

This is my worst nightmare. I would feel it crawling on me for the rest of my life.

Wreckinball · Yesterday 08:00

OP I would be seeking a refund. A hotel room should not have carpet beetles. Spiders, flies, moths and general bugs yes but not carpet beetles

Motorina · Yesterday 08:00

Like others, I’m pretty sure that’s not a bed bug, however as a veteran back packer:

  1. hot wash and hot tumble dry for anything that will take it.
  2. anything that won’t, put in a black bin bag and leave in the hot sun for a few days. I would also squirt in some permethrin (house flea treatment spray) for belt and braces, being careful not to expose bees/other insects.
  3. anything you can’t manage one of those ways, or if it’s winter so the black bag won’t heat, then put in the freezer for a week.

I have an ungodly horror of bed bugs.

Agreed

MangoSunset · Yesterday 08:05

That doesn't look like a bedbug, bedbugs aren't as big and have a flatter appearance, and are a different shade of brown. I became quite the expert when I was backpacking in my 20's!

DisgustedinBournemouth · Yesterday 08:05

so feeling a bit knackered with massive bags under my eyes
but thanks again so much for last night

I’m glad it doesn’t look like a bed bug but I always check a mattress whenever we stay anywhere for little black dots on it which are a sign of an infestation. I would still tell the management as it’s not nice to have had that crawling on you in the night and also they can fumigate the carpet.

LauraNorda · Yesterday 08:08

Oh do shut up.

Honestly, the smaller the lifeform, the greater the hysterical panic.

The OP probably would have no problem sleeping with a dog or cat.

See the hysteria ramp up as the creatures get smaller. Mouse, spider, woodlice, flea, virus.

@DisgustedinBournemouthMN is popular in Australia hence the comment about deadly snakes and spiders.

Glad they were around to help you out and reassure you. Flowers

I have had some experience with bed bugs, and I don't think that is one.

However, it's definitely better to be safe than sorry. If they get into your house, it's a major headache.

For what it's worth, the exterminator who heat-treated my house told me that the rise of Uber has contributed to the spread of bedbugs. Single biggest factor, he said.

Luckily they don't carry any diseases. They're just gross.

Anyway, the poster who said black plastic bin liners are going to be your new best friend was right. Wrap your clothes in bin liners before you pack them, wrap your cases in bin liners before putting them in your car. All your clothes need to go through the dryer on the highest setting - check the time needed.
Check on an exterminator's website for full information.

That’s interesting about uber. Why did he think that was the case? Because surely those who use uber would still have been using other public transport options like buses, trains or normal cabs? Or is it a cleanliness reason with uber?
