If you had a 'spare' £400k, which lavish but mundane items would you buy?

I've got the £100 pencil sharpener and the £2000 salt and pepper shakers and I'm eying up the gold plated toilet brush holder for £1480

https://www.harrods.com/en-gb/p/zodiac-cylinder-gold-plated-toilet-brush-holder-000000000001590094

But I've still got quite a lot of money left over. What should I get?

Thanks @PhaedraTwo

This is my model - £54:99 +/- store discount so not too shocking.
I second some of the poor reviews. There seems to be a problem with the pepper corns falling into the grinding part so you have to give it a good shake and keep grinding and then it suddenly starts delivering. It’s quite a nice mill but not great.

The £30 one I was eyeing up had a top that slid on and off for refilling which I thought much more practical than using a fiddly screw, especially as DH dropped the screw of the last one we had and lost it under the cooker or somewhere. 🙄 It was also Italian and sleek and stylish. I spent my money on plants instead.

Anyway, since I’m at that garden centre with a spare £400k I’d rather like one of these ancient olive wood meditation trees. £10k iirrc.
And I REALLY need an indoor fountain, planted with the latest seasonal flowers.

Yes!! This is what I had in mind when I was talking about looking at the garden cetre for places for your cats to shit while they ignore their £1200 self cleaning app controlled litter box, which you'd buy anyway because you never know, they might use it.

But I think we might have got through the £400k now? This has been a fun thread.

This may explain the fun and the pepper mills.

That article is gold. But he sounds like he'd fit in well on the MN preppers board. Has anyone checked for a poster mansplaining prepping and making sure people are stocked up with naice pens and good quality tableware?

I’m always musing over whether I’d buy an antique tiara or get one commissioned. Decisions, decisions.

My tiara would need to be custom designed. Nothing says 'not really rich' like an off-the-peg tiara.

ShamedBySiri · 28/05/2026 06:49

Ooh cats would love a plant fountain @Bjorkdidit
I had no idea automatic cat litters existed until my hairdresser told me his girlfriend wanted a kitten but he wouldn’t let her have one unless she bought an automatic cat litter for it. I was amazed by the £700 price tag but of course there’s always a better model!

ShamedBySiri · 28/05/2026 06:50

Of course cats are the reason one would need to get florists in to replant the fountain regularly…😉😂

A house.

Thesausagelady · 28/05/2026 08:57

A camper van, not to sleep in but just to travel somewhere and make a cup of tea.

a small piece of woodland. Just for me.

personal chef to come and meal prep once a week.

noblegiraffe · 28/05/2026 09:09

A personal chef.....but to make the kids' packed lunches.

I've always wanted a turret. With a gym on the ground floor, and an orangery extension for plants, a fabulous bathroom on the second floor and an art studio on the top floor. I even know where it would fit on our house. It would look utterly preposterous but I don't care.

Also an underground sauna, dug into the slope.

I would also quite like deer fencing around my entire garden so that my roses would have a chance.

Finally I would like a freeze-drying machine so I could make those wonderful freeze-dried raspberries and also apple slices from my own produce.

I think the £400k (and some) is all gone.

I'd like a turret, and I think it would be particularly in keeping with a 1970s box.

Potential water shortage?

Possibly wearing socks?

Tempted by the ‘metallic light blue’ (in brochure. ).

Not sure the budget will stretch to two…

Such a shame that the Classic is only in red, I could never drive a red car, even an AC Classic!

I’d buy…

a set of those extraordinarily expensive Japanese cooking knives.

top of the range headphones

weekly Sessions with a personal trainer

a water feature for the garden and a proper greenhouse

Ooh I’ve got those Japanese cooking knives they’re brilliant.🤩

Oooh I was you until a few weeks back when I discovered Lidls dark choc and raspberry magnum type ice creams.
I wouldn't go back to Magnum now even if I had 400 million.

👀👀

If my premium bonds do better than usual, I am really tempted to get the Manufactum library ladder. I am short, so make do with an IKEA Bekväm to reach things.

Poor Nicola has paused her Book Festival tour:

I used to get the Manufactum paper catalogue years ago, it was lovely to browse through it and I wanted everything. I think the only thing I actually bought was a bakelite cylindrical pencil sharpener!

Madcats · 30/05/2026 17:54

I'd somehow forgotten about Manufactum in the past decade (v jealous about your paper catalogue, BTW). I'm more of a Uniball pen girl, so I might optimistically spaff my next month's winnings on a tealight-propelled bath toy:

Excellent! I can't remember when they stopped sending the catalogues but I'm hoping to find some in our next declutter!
