If you had a 'spare' £400k, which lavish but mundane items would you buy?

I've got the £100 pencil sharpener and the £2000 salt and pepper shakers and I'm eying up the gold plated toilet brush holder for £1480

https://www.harrods.com/en-gb/p/zodiac-cylinder-gold-plated-toilet-brush-holder-000000000001590094

But I've still got quite a lot of money left over. What should I get?

After I'd bought a vintage Chanel bag (long coveted) I want a house with a hallway and a parking space. We live in a Victorian cottage on a main road. You go straight into our living room so no hall. Murder when it's wet or snowy. Parking used to be okay when we first moved 16 years ago but it's hell now. I've never been good at parking, but it's put me off driving completely now because its so difficult. DH is brilliant and has no qualms so we've drifted into him doing all the driving.

DH wants a Maserati. He's not parking that on the road...

Wow. Gorgeous. What colour are you getting? Perhaps get two different ones so that they can reflect your outfit for the day?

Tempted by the ‘metallic light blue’ (in brochure. ).

Not sure the budget will stretch to two…

PhaedraTwo · 27/05/2026 18:38

To be fair that does look as if it would be really comfortable.

Sadworld23 · 27/05/2026 18:41

A bath, preferably one you can easily get into and out of.

Showers are great but not relaxing like a bath.

I'm surprised he didn't buy a Vertu phone. It's right up his street.

I think this takes the prize as the biggest waste of £421,312. If anyone can find a bigger waste of more than £400,000 I'll donate a tenner to a charity of your choice (one winner only, my decision is final and SNP and Green Party funds are excluded)

A new bed. Wouldn't need to be too expensive although I like the look of the ones that I think are called sleigh beds . Plus beautiful bed linen.

Ferro · 27/05/2026 19:23

I'd buy a big tub of Lurpak

ReneBallard · 27/05/2026 19:47

A solid gold arse scratcher, studded with diamonds for extra bedazzle and those very stubborn itches

You'd have nothing left from your £400k

Fauxlein · 27/05/2026 20:42

Molten Brown decanted into Bayliss and Harding bottles so the other half doesn't notice. Then I'd buy a motorhome to decant all my fountain pens into like a giant moveable pencil case.

TicTac80 · 27/05/2026 21:25

£400k would get me a house, so I'd do that :) Otherwise, I'd buy a Ninja smoothie/slushie maker

tiptoethrutulips · 27/05/2026 21:26

AirCon for the house
In ground swimming pool

What I particularly like about that is that it’s possible to “make it yours with Klarna’s 4 interest free instalments” 😂

Ha ha, didn't notice that!

It runs on Android 8.1. Current Android OS is 16, shortly to be replaced by 17.

Well there’s always a premium for vintage…😜

Picasso etching for the downstairs bog. For about £2k.

Peugeot pepper mill

A row of perfectly manicured bay trees alongside the drive - with fairy lights.

What?? Are the Peugeot pepper mills very expensive? DD gave us one for Christmas 🤔 She's pretty tight with money normally....
Also it's a bit rubbish. I nearly bought a £30 one that caught my eye at my favourite aspirational garden centre but I thought she might be offended and now they are all gone anyway.

The pepper mills are about £120 I think. More than I'd spend on a pepper mill unless some unearned money (win or inheritance) came my way.

ShamedBySiri · 27/05/2026 23:20

Anyway, since I’m at that garden centre with a spare £400k I’d rather like one of these ancient olive wood meditation trees. £10k iirrc.
And I REALLY need an indoor fountain, planted with the latest seasonal flowers.

Good grief. I’m shocked! Suspect I didn’t show nearly enough gratitude 😅 She hardly wears any clothes that aren’t bought from a charity shop or vinted. I’d never expect her to have a lapse like that! Though she was working on secondment to John Lewis and able to access store discounts so maybe she got it cut price!

They start at around £20 rising to £1,399.

I'd buy some Magnum ice-creams, which are now so bloody expensive they're out of my budget range.

Waitrose have got them for £2 (for the box of 3) at the moment! My husband thought Christmas had come early, so stocked up the freezer! 😂

I’d get that set of pots and pans that Gordan Ramsey is advertising.

I have the frying pan - hexclad. Honestly? Not impressed at all

Took me a moment as well!

Argh why?
