If you had a 'spare' £400k, which lavish but mundane items would you buy?

I've got the £100 pencil sharpener and the £2000 salt and pepper shakers and I'm eying up the gold plated toilet brush holder for £1480

https://www.harrods.com/en-gb/p/zodiac-cylinder-gold-plated-toilet-brush-holder-000000000001590094

But I've still got quite a lot of money left over. What should I get?

A duck house for your moat?

A duck house for your moat?

Oh yes, excellent idea. Although I'd need to also get a moat dug and I think my husband might notice that one.

An old mg car. Probably wouldn’t enjoy driving it in reality - prefer an auto, they’re low to the ground etc, but I can just see myself driving along country lanes, to a riverside location with a traditional picnic hamper, wearing a headscarf, manifesting my inner Audrey Hepburn.

A Porsche and a Ferrari, because I'm not sure which one would go with my handbag 😜

A very posh designer orangery by David Salisbury, those ones you see in the Sunday Times colour mag.

it would put paid to at least £150,000 of your £400,000

Q: is there a condition on the purchase that your DH can't notice you've spent the money @noblegiraffe ? 🤭

A decent sofa!

im putting off getting one until our dogs die! They’re currently 5 years old 😭

Perfect. Which just inspired me to spend £5000 on a picnic hamper.

Edited

Yes please. He's fairly oblivious but he'd probably notice really large purchases. Although I could stash them at my mum's I suppose.

A very good air fryer

a fancy new sofa with the speakers built in etc

new tv

a ninja slushie maker

some expensive plants for the garden

a whole new wardrobe full of clothes

oh and also probably a new house which is double the size of our current one 🤣

I reckon that’s most of my 400k gone!

£1500 for a candle that smells of tobacco? https://www.harrods.com/en-gb/p/marchanta-mini-portoro-candle-60g-000000000007847906

I could buy a new house - but I think DH would notice that.

TeaAndStrumpets · Yesterday 09:16

Education is never wasted. I think I'd sign up to do gcse Biology.

GoodVibesHere · Yesterday 09:17

I'd buy some Magnum ice-creams, which are now so bloody expensive they're out of my budget range.

WonderingWanda · Yesterday 09:18

Mine is dull but I would have a lovely new driveway and buy some trees for my garden. And maybe some sort of giant rainwater storage tank so I can water my garden guilt free. If I had any left I would pay someone else to paint the inside and outside of my house. And replace the hideous 90's internal doors.

MigGirl · Yesterday 09:21

I like fancy pens, one of these would be nice. To many of the other things I'd like DH would notice.

I’d buy…

a set of those extraordinarily expensive Japanese cooking knives.

top of the range headphones

weekly Sessions with a personal trainer

a water feature for the garden and a proper greenhouse

Mydogisagentleman · Yesterday 09:23

Here in Spain new sofas. Current ones are buggered and came with the flat. I can't find any decent ones for less than €3000 each and I want 2 at least.
In England I'd love to have my garden sorted out. It's really small and boring. Mi do have a dog so would like raised beds

UnderstatedMe · Yesterday 09:23

Probably the most boring and mundane response, but I'd get my house in order; new driveway, hedging, redecorate, etc., what I call 'lost money' then overpay the mortgage up to the overpay limit. Get the DC sorted with deposits and dump the rest in a cheap buy-to-let for a recurring income. Then plan a date to retire within 5 years!

MigGirl · Yesterday 09:23

Oh education is an excellent idea and now so expensive, I've always wanted to do a masters, not 100% sure what in but maybe environmental sciences.

JustAnUdea · Yesterday 09:24

I really need the Lego Titanic, some of the book nooks, and the modular buildings etc.

Plus decent display shelves.

Seawolves · Yesterday 09:27

A house, DH wouldn't notice unless he'd come back to haunt me.

Bigearringsbigsmile · Yesterday 09:28

If I cant use it to buy a new house( because it's got to bec frivolous) i would get an architect to come and design a super extension for us then id have it built. I'd get a new roof and the house rewired and a new bathroom. I'd ge the new patio i want snd some diamond stud earrings.

WhatAMarvelousTune · Yesterday 09:29

I’m sure I saw someone post a ridiculously expensive duvet on here over winter. £10K from John Lewis I think

I always feel extremely lavish if I buy a Magnum, but you have £400k to burn so can think even bigger than a Magnum.

How about this $1500 ice cream? https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/av/44902076

Baccarat Hotel"s ÒBear ExtraordinaireÓ $1,500 ice cream sundae is shown in New York City

Would YOU pay $1,500 for this ice cream?

Called the Bear Extraordinaire (that's French for the extraordinary bear in case you were wondering), it's made with vanilla ice cream, truffle, dark chocolate and champagne!

Yes! That's the exact sort of bizarrely expensive mundanity I'm after.
