Scraped someone’s car today. Feeling sick!

I was in a parking space and as I pulled out I scraped the car next to me. I left a note but was too flustered to note registration number.

As I left there was a queue of traffic behind me. I saw something out of the corner of my eye and am now panicking it was the note I left. falling off. I couldn’t stop to check due to the vehicles behind me.

I’ve notified the store, I’ve left messages anonymously on the local town messaging boards and spoken to my insurance company. I just need the other persons registration details.

is there anything else I can do?

id hate for someone to be out of pocket because of me. Hopefully it wasn’t the note falling off and I do tend to overthink stuff.

Do you remember the registration of the car you hit? Realistically you should’ve stayed until the owner got back.

ah I did not know that.

I’ve left messages everywhere now so I am hoping if the note WAS gone they can still get in touch.

I will go to the store and ask them to look on CCTV, then hopefully will have the regististration,

I’ve already started the claim with my insurance and told them where it happened.

Don’t stress. You did what you could. I did the same a year ago. But instead of people helping they took pictures and someone filmed me. An elderly lady stopped to check I was ok. I left a note. Went into the shop and person still not back.

they called me. They were annoyed but calmed down as I claimed responsibility. Insurance sorted it all out.

you did what you could

Iloveeverycat · 24/05/2026 11:45

You have done everything you could have done. Most people wouldn't have done that and just left. Just try not to worry.

literallyevery · 24/05/2026 11:46

OP this was me about 3 weeks ago!
I know the feeling you have and it’s awful, but I can tell you I don’t feel that way now.
we did it outside of insurance and I paid £350 to a body work company. Luckily on my car it polished out but theirs didn’t. Don’t worry, I know easier said than done.

It’s not though is it? Now OP knows what to do the next time they criminally damage someone else’s property.

gindrop · 24/05/2026 11:48

Next time take photos of both cars (including number plates) and the damage, which is helpful for the insurance claim too, and in case the other party claim the damage is greater than it really is.

In a slightly different situation I reported the incident to the police and it turned out the other party had already reported it with a different version of events 🙄 It did help with the insurance claim though.

I think you meant “accidentally “ . I’m no criminal. That implies intent!

I think the pp was probably referring to your complete lack of reading comprehension in asking "Do you remember the registration of the car you hit?" given literally the second line of the OP said she was "was too flustered to note registration number."

and "criminally damage". Get an grip!

Most people will not be able to hang around in a car park for hours waiting for someone to return. It could be all day. You don't know what time of day it was or what else she had on, whether she had kids in the car, etc. Do you really think she should just cancel work because of a scrape, let all her food shopping go off, and her kids miss school to sit in a hot car in a heatwave all because of a scrape?

So, yeah, your post was completely unhelpful.

It’s criminal damage. Like it or not!

Isobel201 · 24/05/2026 11:55

Shit happens, I nearly ran into the back of somebody yesterday, fortunately the car's auto brake worked.

Whatnow89 · 24/05/2026 11:57

You’ve done everything you can do for now OP, don’t let it panic you. There’s no way I’d be waiting around in this heat in case somebody returned soon. They could be gone 24 hours for all you know! At the end of the day, you’ve left a note, informed everyone you needed to and it’s just a lump of metal. Nobody is hurt, it’s just a material object that is going to get fixed.

It’s accidental damage, not criminal damage. There was no intention there to scrape their car.

go on then, find us an example of any case where someone was convicted in a criminal case (not civil claim) for accidentally damaging another person's car. We'll wait....

You seem to have a tenuous grasp on the law and on reality.

You'd hang potentially around for hours? Course you would.

Accidental damage. You are not adding anything useful to the thread

LoisGriffinskitchen · 24/05/2026 12:13

Got details now, note hadn’t fallen off phew! All can now be sorted out.

And below par reading skills. OP was very clear on the reg not being taken down.

@LoisGriffinskitchenI think you have done all you reasonably can to resolve. Glad to hear you have got the details and can try to sort.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 24/05/2026 12:20

I’ve done it and had it done to me. Felt awful both times, but notes left and all sorted easily enough.

Blundl · 24/05/2026 12:23

That's good OP, it will all just go through the insurance, was your car damaged. Someone scraped my car just above the rear wheel arch, it must have been in a carpark and didn't bother doing anything, I noticed it when I was washing it but no idea when it happened.
