Do you remove your toothbrushes if you have workmen in the bathroom or am I being paranoid?

We’ve got floor fitters in the bathroom and I moved all the toothbrushes as I always do if men are working in there. DH thinks this is crazily over the top and what do I think they’re going to do with our toothbrushes anyway? Well I don’t want to think about it too much but possibly rub them round their bums and privates is the answer. I told DH that just because it’s not something he would do, there are some very odd men in this world who would get a thrill from doing stuff like that and I would prefer to remove the temptation altogether.

My feelings might be skewed by the fact that we once stayed in a hotel that had a pube in the kettle 🤢

Hmmm. You’re right OP. I work as office manager in a construction company and Toothbrush Bothering is rife, our tradesmen often wipe toothbrushes round their arses and nobs, so much so it’s actually part of our Risk Assessments now - don’t want one of my joiners to end up with Bristle Rash.

🙄🙄🙄

I feel sorry for the majority of you and all the bum and privates germs you must have ingested over the years due to your trusting (naive?) natures.

Here’s one of those non-existent workmen who do disgusting things in people’s homes for no reason other than a sick thrill.

I’m not showing DH this thread and I’m going to keep hiding my toothbrush when unknown men are around, just in case.

ooh op make sure you sniff the tank at the end of the day in case they get inspired.

Dullmary · 22/05/2026 13:49

Don’t listen to them, OP. I understand. 5 years ago a really strange electrician came round to rewire my house and I’m still thinking about where he might’ve hidden his secret cameras.

Yeah we have it in our Safety Plan whenever we go to a site.

  • 3 points of contact at all times
  • 20-20-20 rule
  • Do not rub customer toothbrushes on genitalia.
TheBloomingDahlia · 22/05/2026 13:52

I couldn’t live like this tbh. Unless you are horrible to tradesmen and they want revenge, it is the very rare oddball that does something like that.

We are indeed ingesting or at least touching bum germs (and in some studies also semen 🤢) quite often. The tradesmen’s hands are probably more of a worry than their bumholes (which have probably been scrubbed clean by the previous customer’s toothbrush anyway)

Eh? What do you think they are going to do? Take boxers down and do a raw fart on the bristles? 😆 🤣.

And there was me mortified my joiner seen my hammock/bra hanging over my jewellery mirror. Thought ohhh that poor young guys eyes will be burnt out 😆 🤣

godmum56 · 22/05/2026 13:56

I would always empty out a bathroom if I had people working in there regardless. I had a lovely electrician visit to sort out my bathroom light this week and when he took down the fitting, it was full of very old very dead insects which cascaded everywhere. No I am not a slattern, it was screwed to the celing and there is no way I could get in to clean it.....but perving with your toothbrush????

MsJinks · 22/05/2026 14:01

Gosh - much more amazing than the underwear in bed thread! Love that MN still has these threads 🤣

EffortlesslyDedicated · 22/05/2026 14:06

I can honestly say this has never occurred to me.

.... however, in 5 years you've done nothing about it?

Nor me.
The paranoia about tradies is something else.

I'd remove toothbrushes in case the work made dust. As for the other things, you really need proper psychological help OP.

This. Also this.

graceinspace999 · 22/05/2026 14:12

I’ve had a total house renovation and I’d hide more than the tooth brushes.

They left my toilet and bathroom looking like the ‘Trainspotter’ toilet.

They rarely flushed and when I mentioned this to their site manager he laughed.

I had to fully bleach and power hose the outdoor toilet’

Worse than grim.

Universe25 · 22/05/2026 14:14

I caught a workman masterbating over my underwear drawer once. Since then I never leave workmen alone and yes would probably hide my toothbrush.

And yes it’s just some men not all men. But why take the chance? In my current role I hear all sorts of disgusting stories … including what some men used to do with postage stamps.

I wouldn't have considered them getting off rubbing my toothbrush on their bits- no

I would consider the dust/debris that renovations make having recently renovated ourselves. Also, not everyone puts the toilet lid down when flushing, so these would be reasons I would remove them- plus anything else on the counter top which could get dust all over it.

This.

This is precisely why when they first arrive, I hand them a mug of tea, the biscuit barrel, and a pair of my worn knickers each to take home.

PropertyD · 22/05/2026 14:31

Isn’t there some stats that say when someone uses your bathroom about 50% of people actually open your bathroom cabinet. At least they do in the movies!

50% of statistics are made up

My feelings might be skewed by the fact that we once stayed in a hotel that had a pube in the kettle 🤢

One of the reasons why I'm always completely clean shaven. I can wash my knickers in hotel kettles safe in the knowledge I'm not leaving behind any incriminating evidence.

Tbf to you OP there really ARE lots of grim weirdos around. So I don't think you're outlandish to put them away.

No of course not! That would be mental.

I'm hoping this is a joke. If not it's the men in white coats OP needs to worry about not the bathroom tradesmen
