Why would my height differ between a workplace check and GP measurement?

Had body check up at work. They checked height with usual rod and said i was 5 foot 5 and a half. My Gp did it about a month ago and said I was 5 foot 4. I dod use to be 5 foot 6 I dont get why im taller from the work test than my GP A MONTH AGO

Yeah, it's weird people cling on to it. It's so out of date. I have no concept of what stones and pounds mean.

It would seem that you are the outlier

catipuss · 19/05/2026 11:53

Shoes, didn't like to flatten your hair, standing differently plus small errors in both. I would think the GP one might be calibrated so I would probably believe that one most.

I know, and I find it weird I am that so many people cling on to an outdated system that most of them will never have been taught in school.

Were they both done using the same method. You didn't keep your shoes on for one did you.

Hate to break it to you OP, I´m 1.76 cm, I think 5.9 in your parlance. Does that make me superior in some way? I think you would hate to interact with me.
Oh, at one hospital I was recorded as 1.73 cm, but my real height doesn´t change whatever the record is. I´m still taller than most women I meet.

All HCP measure differently so the measurements are skewed. Had regular height checks as a child due to a genetic condition. One Dr pulled my head upwards, stretching my neck, told me to stay like that, then put a heavy book on my head and took the measurement from the bottom of it. I’d shrunk quite a bit by the next measurement a few months later.

cecinestpasunepipe · 19/05/2026 12:15

When I was teaching measurements to primary age children, I used a height measuring stick and was shocked to find I was three centimetres shorter than I had always been. Worried about osteoporosis, I took myself off to the doctor who measured me, and I was back to my original height. When I looked again at the school height measuring stick, I found I hadn't inserted it far enough into the base, so got a false reading! Cue a very red face!

"I like being taller than some of the females I interact with"

'Females'? 🙄

Maybe5 · 19/05/2026 12:27

Maybe you had a hot bath and shrunk?

What - even when someone tells you how much their newborn baby weighs? People use lbs and oz for that all the time.

Only for that very first newborn weight. I know 9lbs is quite big. After that no idea. If someone has a month old and gives their weight in lbs I have no further concept if that sounds small or average or large.

An adult measuring their weightloss in anything other than Kg is just meaningless to me. Like Fahrenheit.

This is the second post I’ve seen from you about your height and the apparent superiority you feel over women who are shorter than you. It’s absolutely bizarre.

same, then clocked the user name and not surprised!

Op are you in the Goodman family?

TheBloomingDahlia · 19/05/2026 12:35

Just wear platforms and stand up straight and you will be even taller than the measuring tape said 😱. Or just lie about your height?

DappledThings · 19/05/2026 09:48

Also get with the programme and use the metric system. It's 2026. I'm 46 and 165 cm. No idea what that means in imperial, never used it. My parents in their late 70s consider imperial embarrassingly old-fashioned.

Do you live in the UK?

DappledThings · 19/05/2026 12:36

TheCurious0range · 19/05/2026 12:35

Yes, always.

Same for my parents who haven't used imperial for decades.

You must know this is very unusual

TheCurious0range · 19/05/2026 12:37

Possibly. But I don't understand why it is! Nobody has been taught imperial in school for generations. DS's red book is 10 years old and all charts are in metric.

It's so weird that anyone is picking up imperial anywhere. Other than miles which remain in place in street signs etc.

Most people can just swop between the two though because we use both. You must notice when driving as we use miles here on all the signs.

Yes, miles are the only one used in an official capacity and has been the case for decades

lino floor at GP, fluffy carpet at work. Simples. now stop moaning about trivial stuff

HellsBells13 · 19/05/2026 12:45

Why do you like to be taller than your colleagues? I don't care at 5ft 1ins even year 5 kids are taller than me! 😆

Arlanymor · 19/05/2026 12:45

PerkyOchrePeer · 19/05/2026 07:56

Yes it does matter. I like being a bit taller than some of the females I interact with. Having said that I used to have a female boss at work who was 6 foot 1

But a height measurement won't determine if you're taller than other people! Standing next to them will though!!

Blundl · 19/05/2026 12:47

Well, I'm quite a lot taller than you OP so whether you are 5'4" or 5'6" to me you are still a shortarse.

user9764325677 · 19/05/2026 12:49

I don’t blame you. 53 years isn’t long to get used to decimalisation. You stick with imperial measurement, everyone will work out what you mean
