I just finished the Netflix documentary tonight. I didn't know a huge amount about the case previously (obviously I'd gathered quite a lot of the main details just because it was so high profile).
The main thing that struck me was the sheer level of dysfunction at every single level and on all sides in this case. Jackson, who clearly had a totally warped perception of right and wrong after growing up (although from the way he talked and lived I'd question how much he'd actually matured mentally and emotionally) in the media glare and with unimaginable wealth from a very young age, the families with traumatic back stories filled with domestic abuse and poverty whose vulnerability allowed them to be drawn in, the complete circus that is the US court system, and the slavish devotion of hardcore fans. And I didn't realise the ex-wife agreed to have children with him and effectively hand them over. It's so far beyond the realms of normality.
The whole thing feels like a fever dream or a drug trip.
Guilty or not guilty, it's clear there were absolutely no responsible adults looking out for anyone involved. I find the whole thing extremely sad.
