Cocaine mum friends

Need some advice. A good friend took cocaine in front of me at a party and now I feel I don't really want to hang out. Am I wrong and naive? Does this happen more often than not? It had me thinking - is cocaine any worse than getting pissed? Am confused...

None of my friends do it. Don’t be persuaded here or elsewhere that’s it normal. It may be widespread, but that doesn’t make it normal. It’s illegal and addictive. The amount of managers at my ex work fiddling with their noses and sniffing, it was so obvious. Absolute saddoes.

BerryTwister · 18/05/2026 16:06

Anyone over 30, especially with kids, job, responsibilities, who takes illegal class A drugs, containing who knows what, and built on peoples suffering, is basically a loser. Stupid, naive, and pathetic. I’m sure many on here will disagree with me, but that’s my opinion. I would distance myself from anyone who took cocaine.

VividBrickCat · 18/05/2026 16:07

Why would you want anything to do with someone who has a. No regard for their children if anything went wrong b. Helps fund the criminals responsible for the drug trade and all the horrible things associated with it. When you are young and stupid , people at least have an excuse but if you are old enough to have children then no excuse.

Secretseverywhere · 18/05/2026 16:09

I think it’s pretty common, I took a fair bit of coke at parties in my twenties. the hangover is less than booze and it’s calorie free, we were all skinny back in the day. I don’t know anyone who does coke now (40s) but I suspect I move in pretty tame circles rather than it being less prevalent.

curious79 · 18/05/2026 16:10

Alcohol causes a lot more death in the Uk so the jury is out on which ‘drug’ is worse - the legal or illegal one
…. but taking it in front of you?! Ffs! What was she even thinking?! I would be v angry (but perhaps not enough to bin the friendship)

How many people are murdered or trafficked in order for you to have your bottle of wine or gin and tonic?

Seymour45 · 18/05/2026 14:59

thanks that's interesting. I wonder if it gives you a worse hangover or side effects than alcohol. I had no idea she did cocaine. I'm put off her to be honest

It turns you into a drug addict for starters. Need I go on? Stay away from her, she's bad news, and she must have got it from somewhere, so she's associating with drug dealers.

Harriet36 · 18/05/2026 16:20

Not cool at all and to be honest, a little bit sad.

Chapbook · 18/05/2026 16:20

It is.

But before anyone cuts off a friend for occasional coke use...consider our own and friend's roles in all forms of worldwide exploitation:
Slavery in supply chains | Anti-Slavery International
The reality of this is children forced to mine cobalt for use in the latest mobile phones, or women forced to produce coffee for one of our best-known brands.

I am not trying to engage in 'whataboutery' here to excuse coke use - not at all - but to ask why if we cut off friends for one thing, not for others? Because we risk living in a lonesome bubble ruled solely by our own values and sensitivities.

Agreed. I'm a strict vegan, but every time I drink a cup of coffee, even from a well-regarded fairtrade brand. I'm killing habitat, at best.

ShutupLwren · 18/05/2026 16:29

It’s so common it’s unbelievable. I was about 14 when I was first offered Coke.
I personally don’t go out with my friends who do it because I don’t agree with how many people the drugs trade fucks over. I am absolutely not arsed with people taking drugs if they were a victimless crime but they’re not. I did them before I understood what drugs do it the planet and as soon as I wasn’t a stupid young pleb anymore who had the realisation was my partying was contributing to misery to people in the world, I stopped. They were really fun but not knowing what I know now.

Happyjoe · 18/05/2026 16:31

Drugs industry is... just absolutely awful.

Nogimachi · 18/05/2026 16:34

That’s nasty. I wouldn’t hang out with anyone who took hard (or soft) drugs.
I wouldn’t respect or trust them for a variety of reasons.

That’s an irrational argument as few people would equate the list of bad behaviours that you made in your previous post as equal in impact . We all rank different behaviours or misdemeanours according to our own moral code. People have the right to choose which behaviours cross the line and time and time again I see on people on mumsnet using the “ oh but I know all these middle class professionals who use coke recreationally” as a way to justify drug use. They don’t get to see the middle class professionals in drug rehab who have lost their job or family. I would rather people just be honest and say “ well I enjoy using and t.b.h. the fact it causes so much misery in the world isn’t enough reason for me to stop”. Same as many people would say “ well I enjoy being able to buy clothes that I know are probably produced in sweat shop conditions by children because it’s cheap “ .

@curious79 is that not just because more people drink alcohol than take illegal drugs?

VividBrickCat · 18/05/2026 16:13

That's because alcohol is legal. If they made drugs legal this would be the case too

AllBranGirl · 18/05/2026 16:42

It’s a no from me. I’m done with the days of pretending I don’t mind if others take drugs in front of me.

I don’t want to be around it and if you need drugs to have a good time you are probably going to bore me when your not coked off your face anyway!

Jenpen31 · 18/05/2026 16:42

Drugs are illegal and ruin lives. I personally would distance myself from anyone who takes drugs.

Well they aren’t legal are they!

strawberrylemonade11 · 18/05/2026 16:44

It would be a no for me. I don’t have any friends or family who do cocaine as I don’t want to be associated with it.

CieloElmers · 18/05/2026 16:45

I’ve never tried cocaine, and I don’t like seeing people physically do it tbf so I keep myself away, but I wouldn’t necessarily stop speaking to a friend.
It is soo common, I was so naive when I was younger, but it’s rife, you can tell who’s on it a mile off.

Also, you think people you know don’t take it, you’d be surprised how many do.

But they are. Speeding kills people directly and by increasing the particulates in the air, irresponsible anti-environmental behaviour depletes the planet, contributes to global warming which is already killing people in the floods of Bangladesh etc. Not paying taxes contributes to poverty - that leads to circumstances that cause death...

I am NOT arguing in favour of cocaine. I don't use it because it comes from an exploitative and deadly trade. But given the way we are all steeped in some deadly trade or behaviour, whether it be legal or not why cast off friends for one behaviour and not others?

Do vegans have no friends and cut off family who drink milk or eat prawns?

You may consider it irrational but personally if I cut off every friend who did things that are harmful in some way I would have very few friends. And many would have cut me off.

Which isn't to say we can't discuss these things, raise awareness, and help each other avoid doing harm.

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/05/2026 16:49

None of my friends take cocaine although I do know a few people who do. It would put me right off.

pavillion1 · 18/05/2026 16:50

The gym class lady in my area is a massive coke head .. I only know because she also one of the school mums and a few of them do it regularly.

InstantlyBella · 18/05/2026 16:51

Everybody does it nowadays, you need to let off being such a judgemental person. Live and let live, it will all be legal soon when the Green Party get into power and then you won't have a leg to stand on.

I absolutely agree with this, we all know what happens behind the scenes so anyone supporting this are morally repugnant.
