Would you say non-white people born & raised in England are English?

rack909 · 16/05/2026 08:28

Just thought I should hear people’s perspective on this.

Some say it’s an ethnicity, some say it’s a nationality & others say it’s both of them.

I personally think it’s both a Nationality & ethnic group.

If someone says they are from England, they are denoting their nationality as English even if they don’t say it outright. It’s the same thing.

I saw an idiot online post the other day that only white English people should be allowed to be in government - so the Welsh, Scottish and NI cant even govern their own countries then?!

DH was born in England to Scottish parents, was raised and schooled in Scotland, and has a distinct Scottish accent. Is he English?

This is pretty much me but with different parentage including one non British. I tick White Other in surveys.

tooloololoo · 16/05/2026 12:12

I would say I’m British - speak English.
Despite parents from abroad.

MN HQ seemingly ok with far right replacement theory rhetoric. But if more report then maybe they will realise just how deeply offensive this is to non-white MN users. Appalled to be affronted by this on a usually ‘safe’ space from overt racism.

MNHQ is also content with people calling areas with a high percentage of black and brown residents "ghettos".

Eta, I see Irishlad has been deleted.

HornyHornersPinger · 16/05/2026 12:19

Why are you confusing Religion and Nationality? 2 totally different things...
The 'Islamic terrorists born and bred here' are still English/British and that's what it'll say next 'Nationality' on their passports. Their GB 1s anyway...

Anyone who isn’t appalled by - and doesn’t challenge - that nonsense is part of the problem.

Shouldn’t matter what ethnicity you are (e.g. ‘White’ or ‘non-White’ - whatever that is).

Not legally, because England has no legal citizenship. Not culturally, because of mass multiculturalism. Not ethnically, because millions of people identify with other ethnic groups.

So only according to your feelings?

Ultimately, all of this hysteria derives from the racist inability to accept that Europeans (in this case the English) have distinct ethno-national identities that are very obviously threatened by mass immigration.

We have had Islamist terrorists born and bred here. We have ethnic enclaves comprised of tens of thousands of people that were born here. We have recently had a Prime Minister born here who claims India is “where I’m from.” In a world of mass immigration, place of birth is increasingly meaningless.

Another new or newly name changed poster pushing the GRT. Bit more subtly than Irishlad though, tbf.

Yes, and Guy Fawkes was born here. As was Oswald Moseley and his blackshirts. But that terrorism is ok as they are white and Christian?

Which “ethnic group” are we? Viking, Norman, Celt, Saxon, Jute, Roman, Dutch, Jute, Angle, Briton, Pict???

English is an ethnic group. It’s just not the one that Tommy Ten Names and his cronies think it is. Ethnicity is a social construct.

You seem to be suggesting that an ethnic group deriving from prior ethnic groups thousands of years ago means that it doesn’t exist.

Hilarious, racist drivel which would disqualify every single ethnic group on the planet.

Even the very groups you mentioned! For by “Norman” do you mean the Franks, Norse or Gallo-Romans? And by “Franks” do you mean the Salians or the Ripuarians? And by “Salians” do you mean…

As I said, all this hysteria ultimately derives from an inability to accept that Europeans (here the English) have ethno-national identities that are very obviously threatened by mass immigration.

I am white and was born and raised in an Asian country. Not a single person ever thought I was anything other than British. I would not have been able to get citizenship of that country as it is basically impossible to get if you are not ethnically from there.

Good for you! I'm white and was born and raised in an African country. I've only ever been considered African. 🖕🏼

Seeing as the Anglo Saxons were the last mass settlers in England and that was about 1500 years ago it's pretty fair to say that families descending from them and the people that were also here previous to them have the right to call themselves and think of themselves English. I don't see anyone claiming that the Welsh have no right to call themselves Welsh?

As i said, straight out of the Tommy Robinson playbook.

Real name: Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. Son of an immigrant to the UK.

My point is that we are a glorious and fabulous mix of ethnic heritage and that very mix is what has made this country’s people so creative, intelligent and amazing. Couldn’t give a toss about ‘Franks’ or whatever, that’s just reductive claptrap.

@Hobbitfeet32, yes I am non-white + born and raised in England .

Interesting then that you decided to make one of the goadiest threads I've seen recently, and that's saying something amongst the local election threads.

Your only point is there to generate an argument, and you have offered nothing in terms of further insight.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the marches today of course.

Many of modern day white Southern Englanders have greater French/Norman and Germanic DNA than Britannic/Celtic DNA. Many Scots, Welsh and Irish to this day have significantly greater 'native' DNA than English inhabitants of the British Isles.

Let's all do DNA testing and post our results!

JudgeJ · 16/05/2026 12:32

ShetlandishMum · 16/05/2026 08:28

Of course they are.

Exactly. My 'white' daughters were not born in the UK but they are British. We had a 'discussion' in a quiz recently about the phrase 'German born', I said it meant someone born with German nationality who has changed it, others said it was someone of any nationality born in Germany, The answer was John McEnroe so the second meaning was applied, I still think it's wrong!

Indeed. Its all just racist claptrap that MN HQ should be ashamed of allowing to stand. I’m off to walk my 2 mongrel dogs who are very very old and very healthy and very happy as having that rich mix of genes has served then well.

Didn't we have that discussion a few weeks ago and it was then deleted?

So again, of course if you are born in England you are English.

Why even asking the question?

It is sad that in 2026 some people still imply that to be English you have to be white.

Edited

A very dear friend of West Indian origins was born in Wales, he considers himself British except when the WI play England at cricket, if the WI ever played Wales he would be totally torn.
