Farage and this £5m

Two things are puzzling me.

If it's perfectly legitimate and above board to accept a large sum to pay for security, why wouldn't you declare it anyway, just to be on the safe side?

If it was a private gift between two individuals, how has it come to light?

I don’t know. But if it was Keir Starmer I do know there would be about three hundred threads about it on here and Nick Ferrari would’ve practically had a coronary.

PickAChew · 14/05/2026 18:24

Oh, his excuse has changed. It's now a reward for 27 years of campaigning for brexit, he claims.

He knows he can't wriggle out of this, now.

Dearover · 14/05/2026 18:27

Meanwhile Labour is so busy cannabalising itself that nobody has noticed Farage moving into Downing Steet and redecorating using the same lot as Carrie had

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2026 18:27

I wondered how it came to light. Surely your bank account is your own affair. Did the man who gave it to Nigel Farage tip someone off ? Do MPs have to declare their gifts of money ? Sorry to sound dim, but I’m not sure how everyone knows about this.
Five million pays for a lot of security. What has he spent it on?

Yeah, I noted that change of excuse too. And apparently he’s ’not worried’ about an investigation. Lol. Yes he is, he’s cacking himself. Possibly not about the 5 mil per se, but how it might trigger a closer look at the rest of his financial affairs…

Oh I didn't realise he'd changed the excuse. Doesn't a reward for his political scheming seem even dodgier?

Yes, that's what the row is about. MPs must disclose gifts received in the period before election. Farage is trying to use a dead cat strategy by claiming that the Guardian illegally obtained the information which enabled them to write a story about his dodgy dealings.

i hadn’t seen this. Unsurprising really, considering how low down the news agenda this is.

it’s baffling how he’s managing to keep this so low key. I guess it’s because the gift wasn’t a suit or pair of specs.

They are supposed to declare it - that's the issue, he didn't because he claims he didn't need to, as he wasn't an MP until a few weeks later.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 14/05/2026 18:33

Think it was a Guardian investigation wasn’t it? If it was paid to one of Farage’s companies it would be visible in accounts maybe? Or if the donor paid it from his own company, that would be recorded too.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 14/05/2026 18:34

The Times today reported that Farage bought a £1.4m house shortly after the £5m donation.

CurlewKate · 14/05/2026 18:38

Interesting that a little while later he paid 1.5mil in cash for a house….

AndWorseAFemale · 14/05/2026 18:40

I don't seriously think that there is a single person who really believes him. It's just that his supporters won't give a shit.

Don’t know why he’s bothered. None of the papers were at all interested in the Clacton house thing while they were apoplectic about Rayner.

He knows he’s going to get away with it.

He did not pay in cash for a house. His girlfriend did IIRC. It is her house.

important to get the facts right or people might think it was not entirely above board.

Two different properties I think

No, that was a different house. Between them they now have five.

Just here to appreciate the Nick Ferrari reference.
And you are so right.

unsevered67 · 14/05/2026 18:52

The excuses are bullshit. In real life no- one gives a gift of 5 million pounds to someone outwith their family with no ulterior motive. And no decent person would accept such a gift.
He’s an absolute grifter. Reform have no concern for anyone but themselves and their rich mates. I cannot comprehend why people don’t see through them

parietal · 14/05/2026 18:52

Of course no one knows where is girlfriend for the funds to buy a convenient house, as she doesn’t have an obvious source for this wealth

the whole thing is so obviously dodgy that people should be paying attention.

This. His other income is all easily visible https://members.parliament.uk/member/5091/registeredinterests. Nobody seems to give a shit that he’s being paid extortionate amounts of money to be a speaker at an event for a couple of hours, including many speaking events in the US. Or that he’s being paid by Direct Bullion to promote gold bullion. Or his tens of thousands of £ of gifts from overseas business men. Or his hospitality gifts to F1 by the Abu Dhabi government (gotta make sure you put Britain first, obviously). His engagement with X and Google. He’s a man of the people, don’t ya know? Everyone earns in excess of £2m in side gigs and gifts in a 2 year period, obviously.

StormGazing · 14/05/2026 18:57

Apparently it was given to the party for his security over his lifetime … however, if the party runs the way fiscal year ends run, then it would need a contract I believe to ensure it’s spread across the years stated … if that’s the case then let’s see the contract Farage, or at least a forensic accountant!
also, he has to declare monies received a year before becoming an MP, and also they need to err on the side of caution if they’re not sure whether to declare it
it stinks —- Farage is a bully and a showboater, all hot air to rile up as many people as possible - he won’t deliver, he’s a liar who is out for himself only…. Albeit he now is in the pocket of Mr Harbourne!

Not long afterwards he bought a £1.5 million pound house in cash. But it wasn’t paid for from this money. Grin

Oop cross post.

Ironic. Your facts are wrong. She owns a different house. He owns 4, one of which is this £1.4m one. The reform spokesperson today did not say it wasn’t his house, they said it wasn’t bought with the £5m.
