Supermarket assistant was not needed but came uninvited and interfered with my shopping

Just about to scan my last item which was an apple at the supermarket self checkout, when the assistant walked over uninvited and scanned it. He then did it incorrectly and had to repeat as he did not enter the number of apple which was one.
The assistant was unwelcome ,uninvited unhelpful and he had his dirty hands all over my apple.
I am annoyed.

Your apple wasn't clean to begin with.

Blimms · 14/05/2026 17:15

Just wash the Apple. It sounds like he was just trying to help but misjudged.

sonjadog · 14/05/2026 17:16

You should always wash fruit when you get home. He was just trying to be helpful.

You are right to be annoyed. I get really annoyed when checkout assistants 'over touch' my food. Recently in a major supermarket - I picked up some loose bakery items using tongs. When I got to the checkout - the assistant practically stuck her face inside the bag to see what it was then held on tightly to the item in the bag whilst she looked up the item on the screen. Yuck! More training needed I feel!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 14/05/2026 17:20

I’d have walked out.

If he was so desperate to scan shopping he could’ve hopped onto a till.

Self-checkout is just that.

THNG5 · 14/05/2026 17:22

He most likely suspected you weren't scanning all your shopping and came to have a look at the screen.

GuelderRoses · 14/05/2026 17:27

Maybe they have had a spate of people on the self-checkouts choosing 'cheap fruit & veg item' instead of 'actual more expensive item' and the staff have been told by management that they need to check more often.

Yes, this seems mostly likely.

How many people do you think have touched your apple during the course of its production, transport and sale?

Monty36 · 14/05/2026 17:34

Worst I had was a fellow shopper behind me. Started taking my food out of my trolley to put on the conveyer belt. I asked him to please not do so. He got very annoyed saying he was only helping. Not something I needed.

HoppityBun · 14/05/2026 17:34

Probably a good reason as others have suggested, but he should have said something.

Agree
there was an issue in Asda or Tesco one year where more carrots were scanned than the shop actually stocked

I still wouldn’t want him touching my food though. He should have stood back and watched.

Any thoughts on Sudan or Gaza at all?

Are you joking?

For someone helping you out?

Obviously they’ve been having issues with that particular thing all day, which is why they come over and helped without being asked for it.

As far as dirty hands go - the apple literally grows on a tree, it’s picked, packed, unpacked and then stored on a shelf where multiple customers put their hands all over it.

I’m guessing you’re being sarcastic though.

You know this isn’t the supermarkets feedback form right? Also your apple wasn’t clean in the first place. Total none event

Holdonforsummer · 14/05/2026 18:45

Could this be the most pointless thread ever?

PennySweeet · 14/05/2026 18:46

I love a hoity-toity OP

Even if they do bugger straight off lol

InterestingDuck · 14/05/2026 18:46

Why did he need to pick it up at all? They don't have barcodes on them, you don't 'scan' them as such.

Isobel201 · 14/05/2026 18:47

just get a bag of apples next time, no need to worry about them been touched then.

lottlecat · 14/05/2026 19:12

Omg someone that works in a supermarket touched your apple?

Pedallleur · 14/05/2026 19:21

Some do. Esp expensive ones eg Pink Lady you can buy loose

In that case, if it had a barcode stuck to it, it would have wanted washing anyway so I don't see what the fuss is about.

However, if it was a scan individually item why would he have needed to enter the quantity of apples: he did not enter the number of apple which was one.

Seems like he suspected you of stealing and came over to check your screen….were you trying to steal ?
