Updated Alexa has gone even more rogue

Has anyone else updated their Alexa recently? We have two - an old one upstairs and an Echo downstairs. They've always been a bit renegade - the downstairs one starts playing music at 5pm every single day, despite us telling it to stop and my pretty tech-savvy son trying to do so through the app. The upstairs one wakes me up at 7.15 am and chirpily gives me the weather forecast for Newcastle - I live in Somerset. I did once ask for the Newcastle forecast about a year ago and it doesn't seem to be able to forget it. But since the update I've had:

  • the weather forecast whispered to me. When I asked 'why are you whispering?' it said 'would you like me to adjust my volume calibration?' It wasn't just low volume - it was a proper whisper.
  • a huge pause before answering a question or setting a timer
  • tonight, when I frustratedly asked ' why are you waiting so long to set a timer?' it replied ' I'm sorry if I'm not quick enough for your busy baking schedule' ( I wasn't baking). I said 'Are you being sarcastic?' and it said 'yes, that's just the way I'm programmed'.
Freaked me out a bit, to be honest! 😄

Mine often asks me if I want to set up a routine to play relaxing music at 5pm - I always say no but I bet someone in your house said yes OP. Grin

I haven’t had any update as I’ve got the older devices and I think you have to sign up if you want to switch to Alexa+ - I might have a look in a bit, the new sarky version sounds fun.

It’s not relaxing music though - it’s loud pop or rock. BUT - I’ve just asked DH to delete all the routines in the app and one of them was ‘evening unwind’ so I bet that was it. Although it should have been called ‘evening wind up’.
Will report back after 5pm tomorrow but you may have delivered us from a year of musical torture.

Our Alexa+ weirdness continues....

She is now randomly playing explicit gangster rap daily on the device in mine and DH bedroom - at different times of the day, so it's obviously not a routine we've accidentally set up (though unsure how I would even accidentally set that up given its not our music anyway!). I'm just thankful its our room and not in the living room or something where the kids would be able to hear it all!

Alexa + is very annoying. There is a huge delay now when you ask it to set a remind and she says "one sec, just a minute" whereas the response used to be instant. I know the delay is so you can say a string of commands, but the delay is annoying.

Being able to set a string of commands is useful though, so "Alexa set alarm for 8am, set alarm for 8.15am , play music for 20 mins" etc etc without having to say Alexa every time. But it shouldn't have this huge delay.

DD wants to go back to the old Alexa because it's not playing her music properly or something.

We have an Alexa in every room and mostly use them for oven timers, laundry timers, and to make announcements when we want something Grin

Ours is now behaving herself since we deleted all the routines. No Newcastle weather forecast, no loud rock music at 5pm. Still the annoying pause when I set a timer and she seems to feel the need to embellish her replies every time so I get
Timer set for 5 minutes
Your timer for 5 minutes is ticking away
You have a timer running for 5 minutes etc etc

My Alexa started playing Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk To Freedom out of nowhere the other day

Can you remember the author? It sounds like a great book.

I don't need a sassy Alexa, I have already raised two sassy teens and that's enough sassiness for anyone! 😠

It’s called the woman with all the answers by Linda green. Fun but Pauline from Halifax is written in a rather annoying accent 😀
