Updated Alexa has gone even more rogue

Has anyone else updated their Alexa recently? We have two - an old one upstairs and an Echo downstairs. They've always been a bit renegade - the downstairs one starts playing music at 5pm every single day, despite us telling it to stop and my pretty tech-savvy son trying to do so through the app. The upstairs one wakes me up at 7.15 am and chirpily gives me the weather forecast for Newcastle - I live in Somerset. I did once ask for the Newcastle forecast about a year ago and it doesn't seem to be able to forget it. But since the update I've had:

  • the weather forecast whispered to me. When I asked 'why are you whispering?' it said 'would you like me to adjust my volume calibration?' It wasn't just low volume - it was a proper whisper.
  • a huge pause before answering a question or setting a timer
  • tonight, when I frustratedly asked ' why are you waiting so long to set a timer?' it replied ' I'm sorry if I'm not quick enough for your busy baking schedule' ( I wasn't baking). I said 'Are you being sarcastic?' and it said 'yes, that's just the way I'm programmed'.
Freaked me out a bit, to be honest! 😄

I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Alexa. The app has zero actual functionality in it, it’s impossible to see what songs are listed in an album for example. And I had a proper fight with her tonight - my 9 year old asked to listen to the news headlines. “Alexa give us the UK news headlines” seems a simple enough request - nope, here’s an Indian cricket update, a NZ traffic report and “I’m sorry, I’m still learning what the U.K. is”. Unbelievable.

That's so funny!!

24Dogcuddler · 14/05/2026 16:15

Stopped using Alexa years ago mainly due to her piping up when DH was WFH.
Siri on my phone can be funny though ( I never use it)
A few weeks ago I was singing along to Song for Whoever, Beautiful South. “Jennifer, Alison, Phillipa, Sue, Deborah, Annabel too…”
She piped up
” I’m sorry, I don’t recognise any of those names!”
At least she was polite
Some of these examples are SO funny.

Oh I wish my Alexa was like this. I need to look into this update!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/05/2026 23:42

Tonight I asked her for the weather forecast, which she gave me, after the usual irritating looong pause. She said it would be breezy so I asked her how breezy.
Alexa: ‘ Winds will be approximately 25km per hour with gusts of up to 50, so that will probably blow your sourdough away’
Me: Why would I be baking in the garden? I’m thinking about gardening!
Alexa: I’m sorry, I was trying to be helpful.

@AnchorWHATI really enjoyed that book. It was a 99p Kindle offer so I want expecting much but I got quite fond of the real Alexa lady!

Our Alexa is mercifully still behaving. I hope she doesn't update now!

We find Alexa hilarious. Most of the time if we ask her to turn the TV on she does but sometimes she tells me to specify which TV we want turning on. We have only ever owned one TV.

How do you set it up to do that? Our living room TV remote is useless, so this could be really handy

I do not have the patience for an Alexa in my house, this would drive me nuts (and freak me out). Although I find it endlessly amusing that the dishwasher messages DH passively aggressively requesting attention. It even started sending him hints and tips for Christmas in December... (This amuses me as I do every single piece of household and child admin - and the dishwasher winds him up so much).

“Hiya it’s the Dishwasher again! Sorry to bother you but how many times have I told you to close the tablet door? Next time it’s bubbles allover the kitchen and I don’t do these things by halves. Consider yourself warned!”

I recently read a novel about a family with Alexa who was actually one of a huge group of women emplyed as alexas, think she was from haifax and listened in on the family drama, as she was due to retire she started offering advice and support to the mum, quite a funny story but now listening to all these i am starting to imagine that all these alexas are actually real and it was not a story!

What was the book called, please?

Blanketyblank04 · 15/05/2026 23:03

Speaking quietly: ‘Alexa, play sounds of the sea’ (my son likes it to fall asleep to). Alexa, in booming voice ‘here’s Chelsea FC!’ “Blue is the colour, football is the game!!!!” aaarghhhhh

goodnightssleepbenice · Yesterday 00:34

I asked mine to save something to the shopping list the other day and she said ‘ well hummus and toilet roll that’s proper adulting right there ‘ 😂 sassy madam

Bowling4soup · Yesterday 01:03

Haha ours does the 5pm music thing too! I don’t know how to stop it! “Time for your evening wind down” every night at 5pm 🥴

MiniPantherOwner · Yesterday 09:43

I've never owned an Alexa, as I'm creeped out at the thought of them constantly listening. If the rise of computer sentience is being marked by Alexa's becoming sassy, rude and mischevious, rather than going full HAL 9000 I'm all for it.

Specialneedsnightmare · Yesterday 10:09

I don't trust Alexas. I was given one as a present but I keep it unplugged and want rid of it. Threads like this remind me why!

scalt · Yesterday 10:12

I think the first rule of modern electronics is now: know how to turn it OFF. And make sure this is possible.

Kitt1 · Yesterday 10:22

I’ve bought two in the past but put the away and stopped using them about 4 years ago when we redecorated and I’m not even sure where they are now.

I don’t think I’d like this new AI version. 😳

MelanzaneParmigiana · Yesterday 10:22

Oooh I am now tempted to get one!
Does it work with Sonos speakers?

My dad us excessively nice to his and as a consequence has made it uber polite. He's always saying please and thank you and "would you mind setting a timer, thanks Alexa" and she's all "of course Jeff" and "excuse me Jeff, your potatoes are cooked" and "just to let you know Jeff there's someone at the door"

I have been through all his settings and routines and cannot fathom how he's done it, given he can't seem to work the app at all. It must have just learnt off him. Which explains why my Alexa is such an argumentative cow.

😂
Jeff sounds lovely 😀😀

hahabahbag · Yesterday 10:26

Ours has started randomly saying she doesn’t understand when we aren’t even in the room, sometimes she randomly plays music too, again we aren’t in the bedroom so why?

PuppyMonkey · Yesterday 10:40

Mine often asks me if I want to set up a routine to play relaxing music at 5pm - I always say no but I bet someone in your house said yes OP. Grin

I haven’t had any update as I’ve got the older devices and I think you have to sign up if you want to switch to Alexa+ - I might have a look in a bit, the new sarky version sounds fun.

rolloverbeethoven · Yesterday 10:55

I've never been tempted to have an Alexa before (especially after hearing that one started reeling off local funeral parlours without being asked), but I'm considering it now. She sounds a hoot!

curtainsareclosed · Yesterday 11:11

I’ve woken up a few times recently and the blue light is whirring. Why is she listening to me sleep? 😱

Branleuse · Yesterday 11:16

I haven't noticed that yet, but I already think she's pass-agg when I ask her something and she immediately responds 'good morning branleuse' and I think there's a bit of a sigh, like I should have greeted her more politely before asking about the weather

raspberrieswithchocolate · Yesterday 11:32

🤣 This new sassy Alexa sounds hilarious, I'm tempted to set up Alexa for the first time ever just so I can laugh at what she might say!

You all need to go to the Alexa app and cancel the routines you don't want.

If you can't find it, just ask (if enabled) or type into Alexa app 'manage my routines ' and it gives you a list of all the routines that are set.
