If you work compressed hours/ have a NWD: what day of the week do you have off and why?

I want to work 5 days (37.5 hours) over 4 days.

Initially, I was going to take Monday or Friday off for obvious reasons but then I hear that this isn’t economical due to bank holidays?

If you have a NWD, which day of the week is it and why?

I do this and have a Tuesday off, mainly because it best suited the needs of the workplace.

xx11x · 12/05/2026 23:07

I have a Monday off and my bank holidays get added to my holiday entitlement.

Clicheinaqashqai · 12/05/2026 23:08

Wednesday. Compressed hours to have a day with the kids and this means I always either get to spend the day with them tomorrow, or I did yesterday!

toddlertoenail · 12/05/2026 23:08

Friday here. Ideally wanted a w to break up the week but that definitely wouldn’t fly in my work as that’s meetings day

RandomMess · 12/05/2026 23:12

There are always at least 4 Monday BH and at least always 1 Friday BH, so Friday is a better choice it’s just unfortunate when Christmas creates 2 additional Friday BH, but doesn’t happen that often? It will happen this year but then not again for years! Still better than a Monday.

clareykb · 12/05/2026 23:16

Tuesday at the time I started OH was away Tues/Wed with work so that's why.. now I love that sometimes it is next to a bank holiday Monday and I get an extra long weekend like at the end of this month!

That70sKid · 12/05/2026 23:21

I have a Friday off. Lovely for long weekends and even better when there is a bank holiday Monday. I got used to working the longer days (I also work from home 2 days) and feel better as I have an extra day off each week. It’s also ideal for things like dentist appointments as I can book things for a Friday.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 12/05/2026 23:27

I had a Monday off as it meant I didn’t have to take a Monday as annual leave when there was a Monday holiday (either a bank holiday or an in-service day when tagged onto school holidays, usually on a Monday here). My workplace doesn’t shut on bank holidays though, these are just included in my annual holiday entitlement so I wasn’t disadvantaged in anyway. It was lovely not to have that Sunday night feeling.

Booooooom · 12/05/2026 23:32

Fridays here, I actually asked for a Thursday initially but it didn't work due to lack of other staff. I love having Fridays off now and am so glad I was forced into it!
Bank hols are added to annual leave so i'm not disadvantaged

In terms of annual leave, taking Mondays is better because it means you can ‘spend’ the bank holidays on another date instead.

I am a Friday off person. It just fits on with how I like to work.

But Monday is the best day to have off when you work part time. Then you don't need to use your leave entitlement for BHols as it's already a day off.

AltitudeCheck · 12/05/2026 23:37

Another vote for Mondays if you get the BH added to your AL balance, only downside is lots of small businesses/ hairdressers/ restaurants are closed on a Monday so so times thongs I'd like to do on my day off can't be done on a Monday!

FortyFacedFuckers · 12/05/2026 23:38

I have a Friday, I would prefer a Monday but someone already had the Monday

Besidemyselfwithworry · 12/05/2026 23:40

I have Fridays off
works well I do the school runs Fridays and things like assemblies, concerts, fairs, themed days, trips I sometimes volunteer on etc often happen on a Friday and it gives me a longer weekend

I’m flexible tho some Fridays I have to work if they need cover but likewise I can then take my day off another day when I need it or claim some overtime if I want the money instead.

My best friend has a Wednesday off and says she loves that as it breaks her week up a bit.

justjuggling · 13/05/2026 02:06

I work compressed hours and have a Friday off. I love it, especially logging off on a Thursday knowing that I have 3 consecutive days out the office!

sparklyblueberry2 · 13/05/2026 02:59

Monday so I don’t have to pay for nursery when they are closed on a bank Hol Monday. Friday to make it a long weekend. I work 12hr shifts.
at our place due to shift work, if you don’t work bank holidays you get AL later in the year, if you do you also get this but get bank holiday enhancements for actually working it.

CowboyGangsterPolitician · 13/05/2026 03:09

I have Thursdays off, I would have Mondays if I could but there is a key meeting I have to go to on a Monday. Others have Fridays so I can’t do then.

I actually really love it, Fridays are a quiet day at work so I get to catch up with admin on Fridays. Also if it’s a BH weekend I take the Friday off and have an extra long weekend!

Caspianberg · 13/05/2026 05:31

Friday off here

It works well as I find child related events ie at nursery or school like concerts, end of year, parents events, sports days always fall on a Friday. So by default around

Plus long weekends. Can use Friday for catching up work if needed, boring appointments, day to day stuff, and leaves weekends less rushed.

MynameisnotJohn · 13/05/2026 05:40

Literally having this discussion at the moment. My boss has Monday after trialling Wednesday but she missed too many meetings. Most people in the organisation take Friday.
I had said Friday by default but flexible to allow others to take Friday off ad hoc. If they need the Friday I’ll take Wednesday. Children are grown so it’s literally just for catch up and a rest. BH are added to my leave pro rata.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 13/05/2026 05:42

Monday. Worked for the organisation and team (couldn’t have a Friday as lots of people already had that as their NWD).

ItsJustMeMyself · 13/05/2026 05:42

Monday and Friday. I don't sleep well at all on Sunday, so Monday helps with that and Friday is because I like a long weekend.

Lengokengo · 13/05/2026 05:51

Friday. Wednesdays were taken in the team already and Monday and Tuesday are our compulsory office days. Thursday usually has loads of meetings, so Friday works best.

FasterthanBolt · 13/05/2026 06:14

Thursdays. I would prefer a Friday but it didn't fit with business needs. I'm used to it now and it works quite well, it means I can do all my life admin and have weekends properly to myself!

spellingtest · 13/05/2026 06:14

I have a Wednesday off and wfh on a Thursday. Really breaks the week up but Friday can be a bit of a boring day to fill as most people have that day off.
