If you work compressed hours/ have a NWD: what day of the week do you have off and why?

TheIsleOfTERF · 12/05/2026 22:50

I want to work 5 days (37.5 hours) over 4 days.

Initially, I was going to take Monday or Friday off for obvious reasons but then I hear that this isn’t economical due to bank holidays?

If you have a NWD, which day of the week is it and why?

I took Monday because I’ve found in the past that I didn’t dread Tuesday in the same way as I dreaded Monday.
It works ok.
In a previous job I worked 4 days and could choose which day I had off each work so that I could be flexible around service needs. That was great and would love that again but not happening in current job.

passmeaglass · 13/05/2026 06:37

Monday due to the needs of the business. I would have picked Friday but now I’m glad it’s Monday as I get bank holiday allowance to use other times and I don’t get that feeling of dread on Sunday!

Naddd · 13/05/2026 07:08

Not Monday due to at least half of Bank hols being on Monday. Friday only has one definite.

keepswimming38 · 13/05/2026 07:10

I work 32 hours over 4 days and have Mondays off. I never have that Monday morning feeling and it tags onto my weekend.

But you get to have the bank hols off on a different day of your choosing! You don’t lose them.

MotherofPufflings · 13/05/2026 07:19

Wednesdays to break the week up. I really like it!

Savvysix1984 · 13/05/2026 07:22

Mondays. You should get the bank holiday allowance included into your AL. I’ve not worked a Monday for years and I never get the dreaded Sunday night feeling on a Monday.

Not necessarily it depends on what the posters contract says

RandomMess · 13/05/2026 08:43

@Tippexy@boysmuminherts depends how your annual leave works tbh.

Our annual leave gets converted into hours and then you have to book hours off for all the bank holidays so you can end up having fewer days of choice if you are part time/compressed hours.

KnickerlessParsons · 13/05/2026 09:04

I have Wednesdays off and I love it. It’s like having an extra weekend every week.

mindutopia · 13/05/2026 09:07

I took Friday or Thursday/Friday depending on whether I was 0.8 or 1.0FTE. This was primarily because in my team, PT working is the norm rather than the exception and these were the days when my working pattern was more likely to align with everyone else for meetings and such. Almost no one works on a Friday.

Can you give me an example of when this wouldn’t be the case?

I used to have a Friday off but found I really wasn't more rested on a Monday after 3 days off than after 2. I've now switched to a Wednesday and it's great. It breaks up the week, I'm only ever working two days in a row, and it's much easier to get appointments for a Wednesday than a Monday or Friday.

msmillicentcat · 13/05/2026 09:15

Monday is the most advantageous to the employee because you normally get the bank holidays added to your leave allowance. So it’s like having extra leave days, as well as being off on the bank holidays without having to take them as leave. Some companies might expect you to take the substitute leave day as close to the bank holiday as possible, it should say in your annual leave policy.

user7666547 · 13/05/2026 09:20

Wednesday. I am self employed, and I only ever work 2 days in a row. It’s great for me

Exactly. This is why you should have the Monday as your nwd. So you dont have to use leave for that day.

I have a Wednesday off. It splits the week. I wfh on a Thursday so it’s nice to have 2 days were I don’t need to commute. I have had to change a few times due to operational needs.

I loved a Friday off. Exhausted by Thursday, but loved a long weekend to get away. DP also finished early on a Friday so we always did something.

had a Thursday off for a few years. It was a day off, but prefer Friday or Wednesday.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 13/05/2026 11:26

I used to have Wednesdays off as it broke up the week and meant I never had more than two days away from my toddler.

Now toddler is at school and I'm a fair bit more senior, I take Fridays off. I wouldn't like to feel on the back foot by missing Mondays and having the Friday makes long weekends away much easier.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/05/2026 12:21

I work 34 hrs over 4 days.
I have Mondays off.
I benefit from how my organisation treats BH for PTers by having Mondays off. So much so that new applications for PT work can no longer have a non working Monday.

This is why I have Mondays off.

Also - i work a lot with tender returns, and deadlines always a Friday - I like to be in for that. When I first went pt I job shared, and did Wed-Fri because those were the days I could get childcare for. It’s also much nicer to be in work on a Friday (people liking forward to the weekend) than Monday (dreary people) and I never get Sunday Blues.

I have a Monday off and my bank holidays get added to my holiday entitlement.

Same. It feels like free holiday days! Friday is quiet so work that day so you chill out. I WFH and do all my laundry!

WorstPaceScenario · 13/05/2026 12:29

Monday and Friday; public holidays come out of my annual leave entitlement, so I don't lose out on those.

Stoicandhappy · 13/05/2026 12:35

Wednesday. I love never having to work more than two days in a row.

dompedro · 13/05/2026 12:36

Naddd · 13/05/2026 07:23

All workers have to be treated equitably. So any BH’s that fall on a non-working day need to be added to the leave allowance for the employee to use as they choose. There are no scenarios where this would not be the case.

OP I work Tuesday-Thursday so have a long weekend. Re: BHs it definitely works in my favour.
I used to have Thursdays off and work Fridays. But the nature of my work (healthcare) means two “end of the weeks” made my job more stressful, in that I’d have to have everything written up and completed on Wednesday and on Friday.
