Some people really are as thick as mince...

So far today I've seen 3 posts on 3 different local FB groups from people convinced that the reason they haven't received their polling cards for tomorrow's elections is some sort of deliberate conspiracy.

The real reason, however, is that there is no election happening in our area.

You'd think they'd a) have noticed the complete lack of electioneering/canvassing/posters in front gardens etc locally, b) have realised their polling cards hadn't arrived and done something about it before today if they were that invested in voting, or even c) spent 30 seconds checking online before spaffing such nonsense....

They clearly haven't even tried to find out who the local candidates are, because if they had they'd have found out there are no local candidates because there are no local elections here [doh]

Probably the people who believe voting in Reform local councillors will "stop the boats".

Well. I did a tiny little snoop on their profiles (well, 2 of them, the other posted anonymously) and yes. How did you guess 😂

Takes me back to the Brexit referendum and reports that on Facebook people were warning each other not to use the pencil in the voting booth as Leave votes would be rubbed out by the Returning Officer and staff. Could hardly have made it more obvious that people spouting this drivel had never bothered to vote before.

quite.

Knew it would be the Reform tribe.

jen337 · 06/05/2026 13:06

Not holding an election is clearly a conspiracy to keep reform out in your area.

Celandines · 06/05/2026 13:11

That's funny. You don't need a polling card to vote even if there was an election.

Fun fact, they use pencils as they are easier to store, pens might leak/ dry up/ run out. In tropical countries pens don't keep very well, for example. It's easier to sharpen a pencil than to run round finding pens that work, and if they've all gone tits up what can you do?
I've vote counted many, many times and I can assure you that no way do the counters rub out the votes and change them. There's too many people wandering about checking that the votes are in the right piles, plus the supervisor checks every now and then a random pile.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2026 13:23

Well, yes! I imagine the same paranoid people had never watched the TV coverage of the various stages of vote counting.

Brexit was a poster exhibition of people falling over themselves to demonstrate their extreme stupidity as publicly as possible.

My favourite ones were the British pensioners who lived, likely unofficially, somewhere like Benidorm announcing on BBC Breakfast TV that they were planning to vote leave 'because there was too much immigration these days'. You couldn't make it up.

They should have ripped up the vote from anyone unable to explain what a third country is.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2026 13:26

I remember vox pops and posts the day after the referendum from people who'd voted Leave who were dumbfounded it had actually happened as they only voted that way as some kind of obscure protest vote, supremely confident that it wouldn't actually happen. As the implications began to hit them, they were very worried. Bit late for that!

FettchYeSandbagges · 06/05/2026 13:28

Oh dear. Stupid is as stupid does.😂

Dontcallmescarface · 06/05/2026 13:32

My favourite on our FB page was " why isn't an election happing in this area....it's outrageous"..erm we had one last year, that's why.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 06/05/2026 13:36

I can kind of see how, in isolation, people might not instantly get that not everywhere has elections, given the huge amount of coverage of them across the media - chiefly people who are not online.

However, if people are moaning on FB, then they clearly are online. I know we aren't having elections in my area, but out of interest, I just searched for 'Mytown elections May 2026' and it took me two clicks to see 'This year is what’s known as a fallow year for Mytown Council, which means we don't have any scheduled elections taking place on 7 May 2026'.

I do agree that it should be patently obvious that, if there were an opportunity to elect people, you would naturally expect those people hoping to be elected to at the very least put a leaflet through doors or put up a few signs.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 06/05/2026 13:38

In tropical countries pens don't keep very well, for example.

To be fair, that's probably not the uppermost reason for not using pens in British elections Grin

Or Green voters who believe anti semitism isn’t a problem in their country or party.

Brexit highlighted some real stupidity. I can remember sitting on the table next to I assume, a mother and daughter in a coffee shop the day after the vote. There was some discussion how they would hace millions of debt now if they broke their leg on holiday in Spain -just like America. But the daughter reasoned they could still holiday in Brittany as that was apparently stil part of Britain. There were stupid people putting crosses all over the ballot paper

  1. no it isn't, or I'd have put it in the OP

  2. you can't edit titles anyway

Ah
We have someone on ours that was convinced that covid was spread via the 5g network. Same person also told people to boycott the local Chinese cos it was their fault too.
Thicker than mince really

SlimShadyPines · 06/05/2026 14:38

Some people are very thick! I’m in an area with an election tomorrow and we’ve got no posters up anywhere so if I was someone relying on that to let me know there was an election then I wouldn’t have a clue! Plenty of leaflets through the door tho as well as our polling cards arriving weeks ago. Not sure if there’ll be cars with loudspeakers out tomorrow to encourage people to vote. I’m not sure if that happens now but I can remember plenty from my childhood!

Buscobel · 06/05/2026 15:11

@SlimShadyPines we have an election tomorrow and there are no posters anywhere and we’ve had only one leaflet. I looked up the candidates in the area and there is no statement from any of them, no indication of what they intend to do if elected and, for some of them, nothing to say that they even live locally.

I always vote, but I don’t know why I bother, if they can’t be bothered.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2026 15:22

We have an independent candidate who wants to rule the world. His contribution to the election booklet was jawdropping.
