Did anyone else realise later their toddlers looked rather funny?

Our TV is linked to my phone so when it goes into standby it shows photos. Pretty much all of them are of the children.

One came up earlier of ds, three years ago so aged just under two and a half and he was a funny looking thing. He took ages to grow hair and it grew in this strange fluffy quill at the back, like a cockatiel. It was white blonde so still looked bald and he had a right scowl on his face, which was his normal expression.

At the time I thought he was the most unbelievably cute toddler. I also thought both mine were beautiful babies. They weren’t Grin

Have others had this? I think they are sweet looking children now but wondering if three years on I’ll think what funny things they were 😂

Nope! My baby is just so adorable lol

jinglejanglescarecat · 05/05/2026 21:25

Yes!!! Had this with one of mine. There’s a period of a few months in their late baby/toddler years that I now look back and think they look a bit funny 😂😂😂

im so glad you posted this as I felt so guilty thinking it!!!

of course I also thought they were the cutest thing at the time. And now!!!

My baby looked like Wallace Shawn, but I thought that at the time. She's beautiful now though, obviously.

Yes, thought he was cute and now realise he looked like a skinned rat as a baby.

Penkie · 05/05/2026 22:29

As toddlers my boys looked fine I think.
As babies they looked like birds.

thistimelastweek · 05/05/2026 22:31

Babies fall in to two camps;
ET or Winston Churchill.
Both of mine were ETs.
And I thought they were beautiful beyond.

Latenightreader · 05/05/2026 22:34

Not so much as a toddler, but I do look at some of the photos I shared when a small baby and wonder what on earth I was thinking...

Haffway · 05/05/2026 22:35

I thought mine had golden auras and were so astonishingly beautiful that I worried they would be snatched, or that another mother would get jealous of them 🙄

In reality they looked like potatoes

MyNameIsTina · 05/05/2026 22:39

My extraordinarily-cute-at-the-time toddler photos look like Myra Hindley's mugshot. "Myra" is 19 now and looks nothing like her!

AvacadoChic · 05/05/2026 22:40

I too thought my baby was the most beautiful baby and genuinely thought everyone must be incredibly jealous. Looking back at photos, she was very average looking. She just looked like every other baby.

Maybe it's designed that way, so the mother adores her child and everyone else is really not interested in kidnapping the incredibly beautiful baby 😁

MyNameIsTina · 05/05/2026 22:41

Am wheezing at the skinned rats, potatoes, birds, murderers and questionable characters we all lovingly nurtured, btw!

This made me laugh.
In the maternity unit I felt sorry for the other mothers having to look enviously on my much more beautiful baby (ET.)
I was constantly amazed that they didn't offer a swap.

AvacadoChic · 05/05/2026 22:44

I, in my delusion, entered my baby in a photo competition and was really confused that she didn't win. She was clearly far more beautiful than any other baby.

Looking back, it's a really boring photo of generic baby.

Wallace Shawn is kinda cute, though.😀

My first toddler looked like a model, people constantly commented on his looks and even now he still looks like the models they use on adverts (though he’s at the pulling faces at the camera stage by now).

My second toddler is adorable too, not necessarily a stereotypic model like my first but he’s a red head and that gets a fair bit of attention, plus he’s so infectiously happy and delighted by everything that almost every photo is of him smiling or doing something comic.

in all honesty I found it hard to believe either of my sons were beautiful as babies, I doted on them but thought they looked like normal babies and I thought people were just being polite. However, over time I realised with my firstborn that they weren’t and that he was an unusually pretty baby, so with my second I was less sceptical.

I think if either of my children had been a scowler they might not be so adorable in photos or real life, but both have people cooing over them regularly.

pinkpony88 · 05/05/2026 23:54

I don’t have children but my DGS is the most perfect looking toddler that I ever saw and I also am sure he’s going to be a genius. It’s true I swear! 🥰

ThisAutumnTown · 05/05/2026 23:56

100%!! I have so many newborn pics of my first that I thought were adorable but looking back, she looks like a tiny little goblin 🤣🤣🤣
We think they’re really funny now.
She’s now a beautiful 8yo.

Potooooooooes · 06/05/2026 00:06

One of mine had a double crown with the most stupid sticky up hair. Another was the incredible bald baby so the Winston Churchill Potato period was not just months long 😬The baby had the most enormous head and a terrible ferocious scowl.

I did of course think they were the mostest most beautiful babies and felt so sorry for all the other babies we knew Grin

chocolateaddictions · 06/05/2026 01:04

I didn’t have this at all so now I feel bad.

I have twins, my DS was the larger twin at birth and was incredibly cute and placid from day one. I know he was objectively cute because the nurse who came to give him his heel prick said she hadn’t wanted to do it as he is just “so darn cute” 😍

My DD OTOH was a bit smaller and just looked like a little mouse. I found her adorable but undeniably mousey.

In the weeks that followed she got the most terrible cradle cap so had bits of skin falling off her head for weeks, and he lost all his newborn hair so sported a fetching receding hairline for a few months.

They did grow into very cute toddlers but some of the baby stage was weird. DD then had absolutely mad hair for years until it finally grew longer.

they are lovely gangly teens now!

I did this too! I think these things are a popularity contest it’s basically mums/ grandparents / relatives voting for their child. No one’s voting a random baby

piscofrisco · 06/05/2026 07:12

My DD1 was a hugely fat faced baby and toddler. She grew out of it and is now skinny as a rake, but all her baby and toddler pictures make her look like the Michelin man.

CreamFirstJamSecond · 06/05/2026 07:59

DS1 went through a phase where he looked quite peculiar. My mum kept asking me to take another photo. I had to explain that I could take as many photos as she wanted but they’d all come out like that because that is how he looked.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 06/05/2026 08:21

My twins are in their 20s now but I’ve got a photo of them taken at nursery …. I distinctly remember a friend laughing and saying “that’s a photo only a mother could love” … I was offended at the time and thought how rude she was.

However, looking at it now 🤣🤣

whywonthelisten · 06/05/2026 08:25

Yes! In retrospect they are still cute but a lot more funny looking than I remember. At the time I thought they were perfection embodied 😂

Luddite26 · 06/05/2026 08:27

Oh absolutely one of my babies was the double of Jonny Vegas. And that's fine he's a lovely man. Jonny that is. My DD is 28 now and fine with it too.
