Did anyone else realise later their toddlers looked rather funny?

Our TV is linked to my phone so when it goes into standby it shows photos. Pretty much all of them are of the children.

One came up earlier of ds, three years ago so aged just under two and a half and he was a funny looking thing. He took ages to grow hair and it grew in this strange fluffy quill at the back, like a cockatiel. It was white blonde so still looked bald and he had a right scowl on his face, which was his normal expression.

At the time I thought he was the most unbelievably cute toddler. I also thought both mine were beautiful babies. They weren’t Grin

Have others had this? I think they are sweet looking children now but wondering if three years on I’ll think what funny things they were 😂

As new babies ( 3 daughters ) mine looked like little dolls .
They were all cute toddlers I guess but my oldest had angry eyebrows 😂 , my middle one was so very cute that I’d have people remark on just how beautiful she was ( peachy , with the darkest brown eyes and light golden brown curls )
youngest was cute ☺️ but not stop you on the street cute

I thought mine had golden auras and were so astonishingly beautiful that I worried they would be snatched, or that another mother would get jealous of them 🙄

In reality they looked like potatoes

😂😂😂So funny, and relateable.

Oh no, please don’t say that! My toddlers are so beautiful. I look at them and wonder how on earth they came from me when I’m so unattractive…but they might actually be hideous after all?! Haha, I suppose the saying about ‘through a mothers eyes’ is true.

now if you said it was last year; we met an adorable “cockatiel baby” in Luton airport in October half term! quiff of white blonde hair and rosy cheeks, we did tell the dad the little one is adorable! to answer the question @followtheswallow one of mine was very like a pixie toddler in retrospect 🧚🏻

My first baby was objectively quite attractive at birth - the rest were all a bit goblinlike. Fortunately, it just made me feel fiercely protective of the poor little things 😄
Having said that, one of them looked very much like my father in law immediately after they were delivered - that was definitely disconcerting!

DS looked like a pirate. He did a pirate face.

He is currently in the habit of doing pirate impressions age 11.

I thought my first bone was the most beautiful child ever watch the earth.. I used to worry that he would be vain and perhaps have no friends as they would be jealous of him.

In reality, he looked a bit like a Squashed tomat, and then Ross kemp.

Mine both went through the potato stage when they were about 4-12months. They were fairly generic (beautiful!) babies before that but we always refer to those months as the "cheerful potato" days.

DD also had a bald spot on the back of her head. She had lots of hair but would rub her head back and forth on her mattress to self soothe at night. Thankfully it grew back after awhile! She ended up with long, luscious hair that could be put into a ponytail from age 2.

And DS was such a chunky baby that people would huff and puff when they picked him up! I thought DD had been chubby but DS was a proper Michelin Man baby, his thighs were enormous. He had a huge appetite and ate everything. He's a typical beanpole now, and still eats everything.

They were both adorable toddlers though. DD looked (and was) angelic. DS looked like an actual cherub, with huge golden curls. Shame his temprement didn't match!

At one point between one and two my daughter looked like a tiny middle aged man. We used to call her Brian From Accounts. She even had the receding hairline.

LostMySocks · 07/05/2026 09:49

All babies and toddlers are beautiful. They're not always aesthetically pleasing in the traditional sense.

Threesloths · 07/05/2026 09:53

My little gs is nearly 11 months. His beautiful blond hair seems to be odd lengths and is patchy but it’s the best hair in the world and it smells so woolly x

SwayingInTime · 07/05/2026 10:02

I look back and do think my second baby/ toddler was incredibly possibly worryingly fat and someone should have said something but I am not sure what they would have said or what I would have done?!

funnyrandomdays · 07/05/2026 10:05

Oh my god yes I know what your saying.

my newborn babies were absolutely stunning and I mean stunning. Honestly I have never seen more beautiful newborns than my own…… until a few years on and I look at their newborn photos and I was shocked 😂. Apparently it’s to do with your hormones which make you see your own child as beautiful 🤩

ShodAndShadySenators · 07/05/2026 10:07

Ah, I thought mine was the most beautiful baby in the antenatal ward. I felt so sorry for the other mums with their hair-topped potatoes when mine was so divine.

However when I look at the photos now I see he was just an ordinary baby, slightly squished head and all that. But he was a beautiful toddler, on holiday all the Greeks were swooning over him and pressing presents on us for him (not unusual for Greeks I do realise). Now he's a gangling teen and that loveliness has worn off somewhat

But I remember so clearly how utter convinced I was of his radiant beauty as a newborn, I've never felt anything so strongly since. The hormones! Those poor pitiful mothers with their inferior infants! 😂

Very apt screenshot I took from a web comic to send to a friend. I can't remember the author, sorry, but it was a very funny comic!

My most incredible, beautiful baby boy was in fact a potato. Big fat face which was very cute but not what anyone could call beautiful, and only the lightest smattering of hair until he was about 1. Very much a Winston Churchill baby. He's now 3 and actually a very cute, cheeky young boy!

My mother put me in a beautiful baby competition in 1965, she was outraged that I came 2nd. I found the newspaper cutting with the story and the pictures. The baby that came 1st had been cut out.😂 I was quiet pretty but as the baby that came 1st is MIA I cant tell you if it was a fair competition.
