As an American who didn't really care about the King coming over to meet with our idiot President, I must say they I am thoroughly enjoying King Charles roasting Trump at every opportunity. I have never been more grateful for British wit and delicate sarcasm in my life. Bravo Charles, keep it up.

Of course Trump is more important and influential than KC.

He could start a world war.

He could destroy the world economy.

He could do any number of things that will have massive impact on the world.

KC does not have that reach or importance in Britain, never mind on the world stage.

Yes, and Trump has the nuclear button!!!

Ohnoyoudont2 · Yesterday 03:43

Charlie is a right wanker, nice to know he's not humiliating himself for once.

BeanQuisine · Yesterday 04:39

Sod the so-called king. He's having a ball over there at public expense for no sane reason, and basically endorsing fellow nutjob Trump as a "loveable eccentric".

The monarchy is a pointless embarrassment, long overdue for dumping.

echt · Yesterday 05:05

Charles is not the "so-called" king, he is the King.

Much love, a fervent republican.

You really have no idea of what you’re talking about.

This is how diplomacy works. Done correctly, like this, it can and does make a huge difference to relations between two countries. We need, unfortunately, to have a relationship with the US and KC is doing a fine job so far.

I am proud that King Charles represents me as a leader.
I find his opinions well researched and his delivery of speeches entertaining and thoughtful.
I am also proud of his interest in countryside, preservation of buildings and habitats and in his genuine interest in meeting new people.
His British humour, no doubt, helps him spend time with Trump.

I have enjoyed all First Lady Melania and Queen Camilla's outfits too.

"Fervent"? Well that at least raised a smile.

Me, I'm not going to apologise for being dismissive of so-called royals. It's one of my few "don't get me started!" topics. 😁

This trip is a great for both parties, distracting from his majesty’s nonce brother and Trump’s own paedo activities.

Agree. Also David Beckhams left foot..

David Beckham’s right foot come to that.

Vitrolinsanity · Yesterday 08:37

Whoever wrote the speech, and everyone had a speechwriter, it still has to be delivered.

Which in this case was pitch perfect.

sammylady37 · Yesterday 08:51

Though I have a soft spot for him, because he was so courteous to Dora (?) Meghan Markle’s mum, at the wedding

A soft spot because he was courteous to his son’s mother in law in public? Bloody hell, the bar really is low.

Honestly, why mention that? Neither have anything to do with the King, he wasn't involved, I don't know if he ever even met Epstein.

Gardenimp · Yesterday 11:40

I'm not a Monarchist, but I don't think anyone else could have done what he did there.

I particularly enjoyer the bell end gift. .

Gardenimp · Yesterday 11:44

Do you think Trump or any of his people "got it"? Did most Americans get it?

I did a double take @OneBusyFinch as you aged me by a year declaring KC3, on whose birthday I was born, is 78.

My Dmum was born 3 days after KC. His birthday is my deadline for ordering her present/posting a card. Very handy!

"Most Americans" didn't vote for Trump. Admittedly I live in so-called "coastal elite" (ie MAGA-hostile) territory but everyone I know here who heard it "got it".

I don't think it was 'for' Trump. As you say, he's so stupid it was designed to go over his head. I think it was designed for a wider audience-standing up for Europe, Canada and the UK and all countries bullied by Trump, as well as a gentle reminder to Congress of their duty to uphold the Constitution. As well as shaming them, that on the 250th anniversary of the founding of the USA and release from the yoke of Monarchy that an ancestor of that Monarch had to remind them of what the founding fathers of their country were fighting for. If only someone could turn up to our Parliament and remind them of the events of 1649, and their own duty in a Constitutional Monarchy.

Yet his mother stumped up £millions and I presume as heir he had some input. What's this soft diplomacy? Trump doesn't care about Diplomacy or etiquette. It's about him, his image and how much he and his family can grift.

So Charlie’s best mate jimmy saville and Brother to epsteins mate Andrew who’s friends with Epsteins best mate trump are one big cesspit. About to be shot down for this, but I think they are all quite pally and the rest is threatre for the masses.

I've never watched any of his speeches before but I watched that one and thought he did an incredible job. I loathe the way the press (in earlier years) went mad for the 'special relationship'. It was just so...cringey. In this speech, he really stands up for the UK and stands up to the USA and it was amazing. He did a great job and I wouldn't be surprised if this moment become part of his legacy.

For all William's popularity (compared to Charles'), I can't see him doing nearly as well with this sort of thing.

I agree. I think from my impressions that Charles is more interested in world affairs and trying to do some good with his position ( while of course taking in millions!) William is a bit more 'I want to be King and will do what I have to to not end up on the chopping block' ( which is very little).

ajandjjmum · Yesterday 19:35

I doubt that Charles would have given such a speech at William's age. I think William has grown to accept his future, and especially since his wife has shown such support. I do wonder if in his younger years he'd have preferred to live his own life (with the financial support that he would inevitably have received), but has now come to terms with the inevitability of his position.

cholmondeleys · Yesterday 19:43

A convenient birthday signalling a very important deadline, @Desperatelyseekinglazysusan! When Charles was a child the National Anthem was played on the radio on his (our) birthday. Loved it!

maftaz · Yesterday 19:45

There's no doubt that C did a stellar job, none.

It worked on two fronts, it showed how uncultured the baboon is, and it certainly polished up the RF image after AMW debacle. Who remembers that right now? Perfect, perfect. The subjects love me again, and all is forgotten.

When KCIII was W’s age, few people would have imagined he would have had such a successful tour in the US.
