God save the King!

As an American who didn't really care about the King coming over to meet with our idiot President, I must say they I am thoroughly enjoying King Charles roasting Trump at every opportunity. I have never been more grateful for British wit and delicate sarcasm in my life. Bravo Charles, keep it up.

Surely all he has to do is say his lines, smile politely and remember not to say FFS you mad orange wanker! out loud.
It's not that high a bar.

Have you listened to the speech ?

It was a magnificent roast.
Brilliantly done.

I'm absolutely positive the speech would have been written collaboratively, with Downing Street, and King Charles' staff working together with him, but Prince Charles has a reputation for writing his own speeches and would certainly have had a lot of input.

It was an absolute masterclass. Although I'm sure a lot of it will have gone right over Trump's head.

JustGiveMeReason · 29/04/2026 17:04

As an aside knowing nothing about the constitution in USA why was Vance chairing the meeting ? Is the President not allowed in Congress ?

It will have been written by the govt. I don't think he has any input.

I'm a republican (in the British sense of the word) so I would happily dispense with the Royal Family but I must admit, KCIII has rather impressed me on this occasion.

I am not a monarchist no any stretch but how dare that lowlife refer to him as Charles.
His Majesty or King Charles you orange fuckwit.

Huh? He's a paper king from a small, not hugely relevant country. As much as I hate odious Trump, he's far more important and more influential than Charles, as is the USA. No one gives much thought about 'the king' or the UK.

As for his medals (someone mentioned upthread how Trump is jealous of his medals), give me a break. He has a couple of mummy-awarded military medals for nothing (haven't even seen any active combat). And the rest are also worthless trinkets. Jubilee and coronation, orders of knighthood, etc. Who doled these out? Mummy did.

They could both crawl under a bush and die for all I care. Trump first. One orange fuckwhit and one eternal useless sponger.

Do people honestly believe that KC wrote that speech? He had lackeys to do that. He may have delivered it well, that’s his job with years of experience (along with ribbon cutting) so nothing amazing as far as I’m concerned.

Pay me what they get and give me all the privileges, I’ll do it and could do it and I could do the holiday in Barbados after, no probs.

Such a big deal being made if this. It’s actually embarrassing that the RF have entertained Trump more than any other president.

If it's a personal speech then King Charles gives his input. Same as the late Queen did.

The bar may not be high, but it must've taken every ounce of willpower for the king not to do this.

He'll need holiday to get over it.

The Government only fully write the King's speech at the State opening of Parliament.

More personal speeches are edited and amended by King Charles with his own input.

Haven't seen any coverage as we are in Spain.
I wouldn't piss on either if they were on fire

What a very unpleasant thing to say.

You clearly know absolutely sod all about international diplomacy, and KC has just shown the world how to do it to perfection.

But this wasn't a 'more personal speech'. This was an intensely sensitive piece of diplomacy/soft power exercised by the british govt at a time of severely sensitive relations between the two countries. I'm sure his minions were able to tweak a comma or two but I very much doubt it was more than this.

Yes, I do believe he wrote it. And that is clearly why he was so determined to go.

Miranda65 · 29/04/2026 17:46

This State Visit shows that the soft power of the Royals does matter.
And the King has played a blinder, although he's long been an excellent speechmaker.
I'm very proud of our King!

Other countries have a respect for the British in a way they certainly do not for the USA. The only person who thinks Trump is far more important than anyone else is the orange tosser himself.

The British Isles might be geographically small, but as a nation we do have massive international clout. Don't forget that KC is also King of over 50 other countries as well.

Doesn’t matter if he didn't write the speech. He agreed to deliver the content.

The gift of that golden bell to Trump was indeed pure genius.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 29/04/2026 18:14

I've been a republican since I was a teenager and I'm nearly 60. I now can't decide whether I would want to give up what we have now to risk getting a Trump. At the moment I'm team Charlie.

Did you actually listen to the speech?

Back in 1957 the Queen was criticised by Lord Atrincham who said that her speeches were written by her advisors and lacked the personal touch. Since then the Queen wrote numerous speeches herself and when speeches were written by others she always edited them and added her own personal touches.

This is the same for King Charles. Now you may not like the royal family but you have to admit King Charles delivered that speech brilliantly.

It really was. There are so many layers of insult in it, yet it looks touching and personal!

Notonthestairs · 29/04/2026 18:48

Regardless of the (royal & governmental) team that will have helped pull the speech together - I don't doubt Charles is capable of putting his opinion across and adding his own thoughts.
It was a excellent speech and very well delivered.

KC delivered a masterclass in British soft diplomacy, light sarcasm, apparent self deprecation and insults subtle enough for most to hear but not his self obsessed target.

I really, really hope that when KC and QC go to bed in their suite in the WH they avoid any possibility of being bugged by lying in a huge bed together WhatsApping each other and sniggering.

I think he probably wrote that speech, and had it lightly edited by advisors. It sounded like 'him'. He's not a daft guy and has a way with words. KC is also way too opinionated and sure of himself to let others write his words for him.

He did an amazing job. Let's not regret the fact we still have this soft power.

Alltheusefulitems · 29/04/2026 19:32

I came to say exactly the same thing @Thehorticulturalhussie

And I also hope KC and QC are chuckling together over their next plan to make DT look like a chump 🤣

HoppityBun · 29/04/2026 21:04

Well I’m a republican, through and through, and I think a monarchy, even a constitutional monarchy is insupportable and I would much prefer a presidential system like that in the Republic of Ireland.

I have to say, however, that having listened to the speech of KC 3 to Congress, I really admire what he said and the way that he said it. I have no doubt that others with his background and privilege could’ve produced the same or similar, but the fact is he is in that position and that is what he said. It was well thought out, comprehensive, heartfelt and gently clever. There was a great deal of his well recorded personal convictions, so whoever wrote it it contained his thoughts and beliefs.. I find myself much more of supporter of him than I was of QE2.

United we stand: divided we fall.

maftaz · 29/04/2026 21:15

Charles did a good job overall, no one could deny that. It is his job and he passed muster in a difficult arena.

It will soon be forgotten about when Trump invades the next country on his list and berates and insults the next person he doesn't like the look or sound of.

I hope that's the last of the British visits to the US in a public and official capacity until that baboon has exited stage left.
