God save the King!

As an American who didn't really care about the King coming over to meet with our idiot President, I must say they I am thoroughly enjoying King Charles roasting Trump at every opportunity. I have never been more grateful for British wit and delicate sarcasm in my life. Bravo Charles, keep it up.

Easily done @OneBusyFinch. 😆

I can feel charles cringing and clenching from over here. How does one deal with someone of such low intellect 😂

I wouldn't call Charles an intellectual. Did you hear him trying to speak French?!?!? 😬🫣

(edited to add: not in the US, obvs!)

BatchCookBabe · 29/04/2026 22:32

Yes, I loved it! Good old Charles! Grin

MyThreeWords · 29/04/2026 17:11

It will have been written by the govt. I don't think he has any input.

Of course he had input! It would have been all Charles. As if 'The Government' would have written that! 😂

Speakofthedevil · 29/04/2026 17:14

Huh? He's a paper king from a small, not hugely relevant country. As much as I hate odious Trump, he's far more important and more influential than Charles, as is the USA. No one gives much thought about 'the king' or the UK.

As for his medals (someone mentioned upthread how Trump is jealous of his medals), give me a break. He has a couple of mummy-awarded military medals for nothing (haven't even seen any active combat). And the rest are also worthless trinkets. Jubilee and coronation, orders of knighthood, etc. Who doled these out? Mummy did.

They could both crawl under a bush and die for all I care. Trump first. One orange fuckwhit and one eternal useless sponger.

LMFAO! 😂 Trump is more important and influential than King Charles?!

Seriously, I almost cracked a rib laughing at that!!! Grin

Well, Trump is causing more ripples around the world but not in a good way. His influence tends to be to suit himself.

Overtheatlantic · 29/04/2026 14:58

I agree OP. It feels like his visit has lifted spirits as well, and we could all do with that.

@Overtheatlantic Agree. Spirits appeared to be visibly lifted in congress.

As a Brit, it lifted my spirits. I really needed that.

This State Visit shows that the soft power of the Royals does matter.
And the King has played a blinder, although he's long been an excellent speechmaker.
I'm very proud of our King!

Me too! Looks like he was very well received too, going by the amount of standing ovations he had.

@JustGiveMeReason

JD Vance as VP is President of the Senate so he sat alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Mike Johnson) for the address to the joint Houses.

No, he cannot write his own speeches for state visits. They are written by the government, possibly with input from his speechwriters, nor can he deviate from his speeches as written.

He doesn't write his own speeches for significant occasions at home either - the opening of Parliament, etc.

mathanxiety · Yesterday 00:51

Unnecessaryletter · 29/04/2026 19:31

I think he probably wrote that speech, and had it lightly edited by advisors. It sounded like 'him'. He's not a daft guy and has a way with words. KC is also way too opinionated and sure of himself to let others write his words for him.

He did an amazing job. Let's not regret the fact we still have this soft power.

There is no way the monarch can write his or her own speeches for state visits.

The British monarch does not have personal agency when speaking in his or her capacity as head of state.

Surely all he has to do is say his lines, smile politely and remember not to say FFS you mad orange wanker! out loud.
It's not that high a bar.

Edited

To not say that is actually quite an ask…

Idk. I would struggle to not say that put loud.

What a pompous post.

Thanks @mathanxiety

Does that mean the President isn't allowed into the 'house' then ?
By virtue of being President, I mean, not because of being the individual.

I've been a republican since I was a teenager and I'm nearly 60. I now can't decide whether I would want to give up what we have now to risk getting a Trump. At the moment I'm team Charlie.

Yup, I’d rather Charles than any politician. Imagine any of the recent or potential ones being the main face of our country. Can you imagine how devoid of wit and warmth a speech from Starmer would’ve been!

MoonKiss · Yesterday 01:16

ElixirOfLife · 29/04/2026 23:59

It was a bit ‘chat show’ but I think that’s just how it is. I was waiting for someone to start whooping.

sittingonabeach · Yesterday 01:16

Charles may not have written the whole speech but he would certainly have had significant input with it.

StressedLP1 · Yesterday 01:25

I was surprised at how direct it was. Didn’t flinch from all the recent trigger points - Ukraine, NATO, checks and balances on the executive, climate change - all the things Trump hates basically. It was quite a bitchslap but tempered with reminding the US that they’re better than this in quite an avuncular way.

Im not particularly royalist but I think old sausage fingers has done a great job here.

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 01:31

I would rather have Charles in Charge of the country instead of Starmer.

LBFseBrom · Yesterday 01:40

I'm glad you appreciate it, I think it has been great. I wonder if the President noticed or understood at the time; it's likely that it has since been explained to him :-).

Well done King Charles, that was impressive.

Of course Trump is more important and influential than KC.

He could start a world war.

He could destroy the world economy.

He could do any number of things that will have massive impact on the world.

KC does not have that reach or importance in Britain, never mind on the world stage.

Im no fan of the Royals, but if you listen to Charles' speech to Congress ( and at the Whitehouse) it's an absolute masterclass in subtle putdown. Well done Chas.

He won't have written it himself - just practised it and delivered it, which he has a lifetime's training to do.
