Ultrasonic Barking Deterrents for Neighbour’s Dogs

I’ve decided to train my neighbour’s dogs seeing as they clearly can’t be bothered.

We are trying to move but it’s not going well so the chances are we will have a newborn in his house and I won’t have them woken up by the incessant yapping.

I want to buy one of those ultra sonic bark deterrents - preferably the kind you put in your garden but a handheld button from the comfort of my bed will work fine. I want to get one that actually works though.

Has anyone done this? What one did you get?

You won’t be training them. You would be upsetting any other dogs in the area too. You need to tackle this as a noise complaint with the council.

Well then there isn’t much you can do. I take it you’ve spoken to the neighbour.

Those devices are cruel. They cause distress and fear in dogs.

Of course I have, she’s an unreasonable dickhead.

I’m not looking for opinions on whether or not I should train her dogs. I’m looking for recommendations for devices that will work and have decent range.

My neighbor at our old place tried to do this and I literally just pulled the dam thing out of his garden. He tried installing another one and I just deactivated it. Go through the proper process but you’ll find it’s natural for dogs to bark they are protecting their territory which is normal dog behaviour. Our neighbour also did this and I kept a record of every single bark ours made with a reason why the barking happened. The case was closed and that’s when he tried one of those devices.

Don’t be silly. A yapping dog waking you up is nothing like the distress you will cause those animals by abusing their very sensitive hearing.

So you are asking for advice to abuse a neighbours dog? We can see who the unreasonable one is here. If you want a silent home use your money from the sale to buy a house with land....and privacy.

I’m going to but in case you hadn’t noticed it’s not a great time to sell a house. My baby is more important than my neighbour’s dogs.

I don't know if it's the same for dog deterrents specifically, but I'm late 20s and am still able to hear many of these kind of devices. The younger you are, the easier they are to hear. Once decided not to buy a flat because of it. Something to consider with a newborn!

There is no excuse for animal cruelty. Your baby will learn to sleep through a bit of barking.

It’s not cruel - it’s a bit of noise used in dog training.

I agree with what sunnylemon said. A few houses down had a dog/cat/fox deterrent set up in their front garden. My teen and I could hear it walking past and it was horrible. I did see that they got rid of it after a few days.

My neighbour got one for their dogs and it was horrendous. My autistic DD would go into complete meltdown when it went off as she could hear it and it hurt her ears.

I 100% understand the pregnancy anxiety around your soon-to-be-born baby, I do. My protectiveness around animals got absolutely crazy for the first while postpartum. But I have to say this seems cruel to me. Your neighbour being a horrible dog owner isn't the dogs' fault, but it's the dogs who will suffer. And not only the ones who are to "blame"!
