What is your oldest favourite food memory?
For me it would be Jacobs cream crackers with Marmite whenever I felt poorly as a kid.
And a small bar of Cadbury milk chocolate which a visiting uncle always used to bring for me.

My mum (who would’ve been 100 if she was still with us) used to make what she called Orange stew! Beef, tinned tomatoes, carrots, a tin of baked beans, red lentils, pearl barley and a tin of tomato soup. She’d then make homemade dumplings for the top. Blooming delicious!
My posh friends used to have powdered rise and shine orange juice which was delicious the nearest artificial orange taste I can get is Sunny D!
also an ice lolly which had jelly in the middle!

When I first started living on my own farm foods used to do a giant filled Yorkshire pudding. Roast beef, mince and onion or sausages with onion gravy.....❤️❤️❤️ Sadly no more. When I was a child the fray bentos pies used to be really full of meat... now it's mainly sauce. Sad 😢 my son will happily eat a whole one by himself though

M&S do a fab toad in the hole and onion gravy! Yum

Does anyone remember ketchips? Frozen chips with ketchup in the middle. Those and Bernard Matthews turkey burgers that had a layer of cheese on top. Memories of my mum, sister and me struggling back from Bejam with the weekly shop that always weighed a ton!

RonnSeall · 20/04/2026 23:51

Findus crispy pancakes and alphabites for tea.
Funny feet ice creams
Screwball ice creams
Max Pax drinks from a machine at school - or just getting the powder in the cup and dipping your finger in it.
Cherryade
Cheese and pineapple hedgehogs at birthday parties.

Long before they made it across the Atlantic, some US friends overseas introduced us kids to strawberry Pop Tarts. You can get them in UK supermarkets now, and they are vile, but my six year old self thought they were the food of the gods.

Jayinthetub · 20/04/2026 23:56

i echo plenty of these and will add Woolies pic n mix!

This is such a lovely thread. Walls Artic Roll was a favourite in my house but only on a Sunday though after the traditional roast beef dinner! Does anyone remember those Birds Eye boil in the bag curries? I used to love the chicken one with the sultanas in it but I was only allowed it once a month as it was considered expensive and junk food! I remember also my friend used to have those Findus crispy beef pancakes regularly which I begged for but we were never allowed those! In more recent times Cadbury’s need to bring back the original Time Out bar which had chocolate twirl in the middle. The current one has far too much wafer and not enough chocolate!

My mum used to buy Bernard Matthews Hamwich. You can still get them but the cheese is sort of scattered through the meat and not on the top anymore.
She also used buy Yeoman instant mash with bacon bits in it, and Heinz Noodle Doodles.
Thankyou to the PPs who mentioned French set yogurts, Saucy Sponge and Double Decker raisins. Memories unlocked!
Unbelievably at our school tuck shop they sold bags of toffee popcorn with peanuts in called Hanky Panky!

Yes, what was that all about?
I've literally never had a curry from a restaurant with sultanas in it.

I put sultanas in a chicken curry. We love the bit of texture and the pop of sweetness you get.

My mum used to do this thing with layers of potato, cheese and onion, and a little bit of milk, then bake it in the oven. It was my favourite meal.

When I was at school I had school dinners. When i had a school trip my mum would walk to the nicer bakes that was a bit further away and get me two crusty white rolls to have.

i still live roughly in same area and will go to that same bakery when i want something from one. They do the most amazing cakes.

CarsairsItReallyDoesHurtMeGirlNsoull · Yesterday 05:40

@snowymarbles Old school bakeries are a rare and wonderful thing.
We go to one for occasional treat lovely strawberry tarts when in season😋

fantasticoplastico · Yesterday 05:44

Gino Ginelli pizzas and their mint choc ice cream which had these sugar crystals in.

pizza rolls you put in the microwave and came out hotter than the sun

Dairy milk when it used to keg in your mouth- it’s a disgrace now.

Creamola Foam at my Nana’s house

Lucozade when sick

A tin of Grants mince and peas on a slice of white bread when I was off school sick. It was delicious and one of the very few convenience foods my mum would have in the house.
