What is your oldest favourite food memory?
For me it would be Jacobs cream crackers with Marmite whenever I felt poorly as a kid.
And a small bar of Cadbury milk chocolate which a visiting uncle always used to bring for me.

My mum used to get lemon syllabubs from M and S in the 70s, I loved them! She also bought cheese and onion patties from there that were like fishcakes, but obviously cheese and onion. They tasted lovely.
Butterscotch Angel Delight (I still buy that!)
Rissoles, home made.
German Apple Cake, home made and very nice. I need to make one, I have the recipe somewhere.
My mum was a brilliant cook, so there was no end of comforting home made meals. Stews, pork chops in creamy sauces. Gammon steak, jacket spud and broad beans in parsely sauce was one of my favourite meals.
Happy days.

Sandwich spread and cheddar cheese sandwiches

Oh yes! We used to have sandwich spread with plastic cheese slices in Warburtons Danish and loved it as kids 😆

Sara Lee chocolate gateau was a very special treat that I miss so much!
Remembering old haunts, grabbing a cheap filling meal at the Stock pot, miss the homity pie at Cranks in Covent garden & there was a veggie cafe in Neals yard that did lovely quiches. Plus the old bakeries such as Hibbards & there was one in Muswell Hill that made a fab baked cheesecake. I really miss those places.

Those raspberry ripple moose’s I always eat them frozen but recently found out you were supposed to defrost them. Also miss Wonka bars they were so good but only available for a short amount of time.

I never knew you were supposed to defrost them… I’ve always eaten them frozen too 🤭😁

danglethedingle · 20/04/2026 22:47

Chocolate concrete with pink custard. I used to love most of the school dinners, and all of the puddings.

Kickinthenostalgia · 20/04/2026 22:47

Used to be this frozen broccoli pasta from m&s mum would buy me and her as a special treat and we’d add spam in, it was bloody lovely, then they stopped them 😬

BobbieTables · 20/04/2026 22:52

Mmm yes! Sarah Lee chocolate cakes were great
My mam used to make a delicious bacon bones soup which I'd love to have again. Also her apple & bramble crumble was so good.
All chocolate was better in the 80s and 90s somehow, maybe Cadbury changed their recipe?
10p mix - Foam bananas, white chocolate fish and chips. Fruit salads
I loved strawberry bon bons, and although they still exist I don't think my teeth could take it now. Also broken biscuits and misshapes - I loved the variety of them.
Now I'm hungry!

Denim4ever · 20/04/2026 22:53

Little Hovis loaves the size of a bread roll that my mum used to give me with a boiled egg.

Illicit Angel Delight and Ice Pops at neighbours houses when I went to play with their kids. My DM disapproved and provided homemade cake or actual Macvities biscuits - also fab 😀

I miss all of Cranks. I remember Neal’s Yard but there was also another veg café nearby in Shorts Gardens, near the wonderful tea shop.

@RedPanda2022 hedgehog crisps were my favourite!

suprisesnotface · 20/04/2026 23:00

My nans fish fingers which would always be shallow fried and served with homemade chips and ketchup from a glass bottle.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 20/04/2026 23:02

Vol au vents filled with tinned creamy chicken stuff. Salmon sandwiches at Hogmanay (we didn’t have a lot of money and it was a real treat to have salmon sandwiches), my aunt used to mix it with vinegar. Salmon paste on sandwiches for school trip packed lunches that came in a little white jar thing. My mum made chicken drumsticks marinated in natural yoghurt then rolled in ready salted crisps and baked, she also made this pasta salad thing with tinned mandarins.

IAmBeaIDrinkTea · 20/04/2026 23:05

School dinner chocolate concrete with green mint custard 💚
That chocolate sauce that you used to pour on your ice cream that went hard. Think it was called Ice Magic. Used to love that when we went round to my Nanna and Granddad's as a kid.
Findus crispy pancakes
Mint choc chip choc ices out of the freezer for your "afters"
Ah memories....

Being introduced the 'Angel Delight' sachets as a kid and thinking it was the best thing ever, sadly everyone since then has never been quite the same. And Zappp ice lollies

Try making it with natural Greek yogurt instead of milk. It’s so much better.

DreamyJade · 20/04/2026 23:10
  • MacDougall’s Saucy Sponge (specifically the raspberry one)
  • Those small sponge cakes you used to get in the freezer section with cream in. They weighed about 15 grams but had about 2000 calories each!
  • Banjos
  • Gold bullion toffee bars in the foil tray
TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 20/04/2026 23:13

Birds Eye Crispy Codpieces.
🤣

shellyleppard · 20/04/2026 23:14

Birds apeel orange drink ? It was powder that you added to water. Ice magic was bloody gorgeous. Vesta packet meals..

Used to feel really sophisticated eating those 🤣

Villanousvillans · 20/04/2026 23:16

My mum’s meat and potato pie. My mum’s chocolate cake.

shellyleppard · 20/04/2026 23:16

When I first started living on my own farm foods used to do a giant filled Yorkshire pudding. Roast beef, mince and onion or sausages with onion gravy.....❤️❤️❤️ Sadly no more. When I was a child the fray bentos pies used to be really full of meat... now it's mainly sauce. Sad 😢 my son will happily eat a whole one by himself though

Nat6999 · 20/04/2026 23:21

Vesta beef curry, on a Friday I was allowed to cook my own tea & always had a Vesta beef curry, I added fresh tomato & extra sultanas, I loved them, it was my first step towards cooking my own curries.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 20/04/2026 23:21

.........my son will happily eat a whole one by himself though

So will I.

My husband used to complain about the lack of meat, but I like the pastry and suet best anyway.

And since my husband left me, I can definitely eat the whole thing myself. I add some gravy, make mash and do some peas. Food of the Gods.
🤣

Yes, what was that all about?
I've literally never had a curry from a restaurant with sultanas in it.

We always had those for afters as a kid, my mum used to buy them in packs of 6 from Bejam's freezer shop in the days before frozen food was in the supermarkets.

When my mum and dad first divorced 40 years ago my dad literally lived off Fray Bentos pies. There’s no pie like a Fray Bentos pie.

Oh my god could we be long lost siblings?!?
