What little acts of rebellion or activism do you do?

I’m not talking about going on marches, but minor things, that you know about.

Mine is I won’t play Michael Jackson songs, after all the alleged behaviour, which certainly wouldn’t be accepted by today’s standards.

The second is I won’t buy McCain products, after they put out an advert for Smileys, which referred to ‘knocker’s’ in them. I thought that language had died out in the seventies.

I like to drive against the arrows in the Waitrose car park. I drive normally in all other car parks.
Also, I only drive against one arrow per trip, I'm not a monster.

I boycott lots of retailers and sometimes can't remember why I am boycotting them and have to look it up (usually good reason).

When driving, if there is a "give way" road feeding on to the road which I'm on, I only let a car in if the driver is a woman.

My logic is that there is more expectation of woman's appearance etc, so it probably took her longer to get ready than a man. Therefore I let her in to save her some time to make up for it slightly. But a man I will not.

Last time I did this, the man started beeping aggressively. So I pointed at the floor where the give way sign was and mouthed "give way" at him and shrugged. It's on him to give way to me, not he other way round.

He then started following me and screaming abuse at me whilst driving.

Wow. I honestly think a woman would never have done that.

Can't stand people who decide that give way rules are up for interpretation. And that applies to people who 'helpfully' let you in - it puts everyone in a risky situation where you are expected to mind read another driver's intent. There's a good reason why its a fail during a driving test.

The worst are those who sit there flashing their lights to let you in, when there was no bloody traffic behind them anyway. Wastes everyone time.

DripDripAprilshower · 20/04/2026 10:29

I won’t watch the HP movies

EmeraldRoulette · 20/04/2026 10:29

@WerzMyHedAt oh so you mean he wasn't going to give way to you and you went anyway?

I'm no longer able to drive, so I can't remember what the rule is about that - I mean if you went without him giving way

CarbootJunction · 20/04/2026 10:29

When flogging stuff at a car boot sale, I'll quote higher prices to men, and lower prices to women.

It was on him to give way. He was at the give way sign. Yet he expects me to give way to him and let him in for some unknown reason.

And then pursues me aggressively because I didn't. Even though I was under no obligation to.

ToadRage · 20/04/2026 10:32

Avoid M&S after they fired me after twelve years of loyal service. I may buy online from them but don't go in the shops especially the one i used to work in, though I found satisfaction in hearing the manager who was there when I was fired, was fired herself shortly after. Apart from that i don't really boycott anyone, a companies political views, stance on trans, made in
... etc. doesn't affect me, if I like their stuff I couldn't care less.

AreYouAGod · 20/04/2026 10:32

I also won’t watch movies that don’t pass the Bechdal test that were made post 2016 when it became mainstream.

SerafinasGoose · 20/04/2026 10:32

I buy vintage clothing and avoid synthetic fibres wherever possible. Fast fashion is terrible for the planet and the quality of products in most high street chains, including the 'high end' ones, has in recent years gone through the floor.

I immediately correct anyone who persists in addressing me as 'Mrs' or by my husband's family name.

I refuse to capitulate to the constant pressure (a daily issue in my workplace) to display visible badges of conformity to specific political ideologies. Any ideology: no matter what it is. I reserve the right to keep my personal beliefs private.

I don't 'announce' pronouns, or for that matter announce anything, especially personal matters, on social media.

I avoid palm oil where possible, even if it means paying a premium for alternative products.

Like many PPs upthread I also avoid unethical firms like Nestle and do not buy from companies like Lush.

I will not be coerced into the current social disease of chronic oversharing. 'Bring your whole self to work' can get in the bin. I owe employers my labour and professionalism, not my entire bloody life.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 20/04/2026 10:32

Won't buy Boden clothes due to Jonnie Boden supporting the hunt.

I didn't know that. Just ran a web search for it. That's another one off my list: not that I'd have bought from Boden anyway as it's frump central.

I won’t do Botox etc.

I don’t fucking “need”
Botox, I am happy to age and I don’t see men agonising over this crap.

i might look cross but the world knows IDGAF

That's hardly rebellion is it 🙄

Sincere question, what if it’s a film in a setting that includes few, if any, women? Eg, certain war films

TheDutchHouse · 20/04/2026 10:37

WhatAMarvelousTune · 20/04/2026 10:20

How could there be a comprehensive list of shops to boycott? You’ve not given an issue you’d like to boycott over! People would disagree eg some would boycott Israeli products, others would boycott brands who have been pro-Palestinian.

Apologies.. I’m meant re women’s rights.

Coffeebeforework · 20/04/2026 10:37

I pay in cash when I can, especially with large businesses (except when it is a big ticket item for consumer protection). I believe quite strongly that people should have a choice in payment methods especially with the COL crisis as cash can help people budget more effectively.

ParisianLady · 20/04/2026 10:37

I correct ‘gender’ to ‘sex’ when that is what they actually mean.

I have been known to subtly adjust incorrect grammar on some signs when I had a pen to hand.

I buy men’s products when the same female equivalent costs more simply because of the pink packaging

AussieManque · 20/04/2026 10:37

I won't use AI. Could easily use it in my work to summarise reports etc but the environmental cost is massive and it's basically cheating. Sadly I know most won't feel the same.

manateeplushie · 20/04/2026 10:37

I ask men if they’re keeping their maiden names when they get married

MrsBrightsides · 20/04/2026 10:38

I usually have anti bac hand gel in my handbag and have used it a couple of times to get rid of racist graffiti on park benches, children's playgrounds.. it works if the bench/play equipment is metal and the pen is a black marker or something.

Oreosareawful · 20/04/2026 10:40

My neighbours have four cars and are trying to push my 'space' further down the street. I'm holding my ground and will park almost touching one of their bumpers rather than further back. Before anyone jumps on me- we DO own the road outside our houses, its a private close and our deeds cover the road. He is on my 'land' and trying to move me. If I get home first, he will reverse right upto my car and has hit it once.

I also wont listen to Michael Jackson, but for some reason the advert for the film they are releasing soon keeps being shown on my YouTube adverts. I skip it as soon as possible.

I won't openly come out as being a TERF on social media as some of my friends have children pretending to be something they are not. Instead I support and share anything JKR to passively show my alligence.

I also avoid it. Why would I help train AI to replace me?!

Plus to be honest what it produces is often a bit odd and sterile. Juniors in the team use it a bit and it is usually very obvious and often has errors

TittyGajillions · 20/04/2026 10:36

That's hardly rebellion is it 🙄

Yes, it is. It's refusal to conform to very pervasive social attitudes as to what's deemed attractive in women and what isn't (and what isn't tends to include the aging process).

When women capitulate to this, they're dismissed as shallow and frivolous. When they refuse, they attract derision not unlike that directed from the post above. And personally I find that refusal - a bit of individuality - a lot more attractive than a set of plastic nails. But as the saying goes, one person's meat is another's poison.

It may perhaps be subtle, but it's a very effective form of personal rebellion.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 20/04/2026 10:44

TittyGajillions · 20/04/2026 10:36

Not buying into the patriarchal pressure on women to adhere to dominant and sexist beauty industry shit is DEFINITELY rebellion.

Monty36 · 20/04/2026 10:46

I shop differently from the shop layout. When you first go in you are expected to buy your fruit and veg, then chilled goods, then cupboard/household, then freezer often last. No.
I do cupboard/household first.

cambiodenombre123 · 20/04/2026 10:48

I stopped following the news so closely and came off social media. Has been so great for my mental health. I'm not falling for media hatred and scaremongering. I'm still involved in activism but am otherwise controlling what I can control and living happily. Feels like the last freedom a person can have.
