What little acts of rebellion or activism do you do?

I’m not talking about going on marches, but minor things, that you know about.

Mine is I won’t play Michael Jackson songs, after all the alleged behaviour, which certainly wouldn’t be accepted by today’s standards.

The second is I won’t buy McCain products, after they put out an advert for Smileys, which referred to ‘knocker’s’ in them. I thought that language had died out in the seventies.

Check out Camp Beagle on instagram and you’ll find it quite easy to stop using make up products and skincare that test on beagles, monkeys, pigs and rabbits :(

The posts about looking away from people driving fancy / nice/ expensive cars cracks me up. As if the driver/s give a fck about what a random person they're driving past thinks. They probably don't even see them...

I've thought of a fun one: about ten years ago, me and my friend realised that a local cyclepath needed greenery chopping back and leaves swept. We wondered about contacting the county council, but decided that we'd actually rather spend two hours doing it ourselves than two hours emailing back and forth. So we did! Then we turned it into an annual event. After the leaves have dropped, we get together a few local chums and clear the path up ourselves. Sometimes we'll have a spring/summer meet too, to trim back the grass that's growing over the path. A couple of years ago, I noticed that there was some low-level barbed wire where people clearly like to go off piste and walk in some scrubby woodland next to the path. So I brought my bolt croppers to the next path-clearing morning. We would be happier without picking up dog poo - but, by and large, path-clearing is good fun and gets the job done to a standard that we like. Recommended!

Who put up the barbed wire? The landowner?

If Putin launched an invasion tomorrow, all those smug, sneering lefties would be waving St George flags and Union Jacks and expecting the very people they despise to go and defend them. For decades now the left have done all they can to make us ashamed of our history and culture. Radio 4 can’t even mention Jane Austen without linking her to colonialism, and Churchill has been transformed from national hero to national villain. On top of that, mass immigration has been used as a tool to IMPOSE a new identity on us. Frankly, what has been done to English people over the last 30 years is a crime. I will never forget and I will never forgive.

Churchill was a warmonger who expected the country to do without while he still had his brandy and cigars.

I mean people who buy a new puppy while they have an elderly dog.

Cunts.

what is the problem unless they rehome or PTS the old dog to do it? I agree that it needs to be done with care but often (I agree not always) an old dog will love to have a younger companion.

Just reading this thread, my whole life seems to consist of tiny acts of rebellion. So many of us doing these things: just proves that it does matter what you do, if there are enough of you.

  • don't buy from Temu or Shein, only buy from Amazon if I cannot find what I want anywhere else (some things, eg specialist light bulbs) are very hard to find
  • use Ecover washing up liquid, surface cleaner and laundry powder
  • recycle everything I possibly can, which means lugging some stuff on the bus to the recycling depot a couple of times a year
  • avoid manmade fibres almost entirely. I have jeans with a bit of stretch in my bras are made from polyester, and my winter coat is breathable polyester or nylon, that's about it
  • shop in local independents especially coffee shops - they're much better than the chains
  • Murdoch-free zone and always have been. Don't subscribe to any streaming channels either
  • wear all my clothes until they fall apart, mend them until the seams are transparent
  • stopped buying produce from a local farm because the farmer is a Reform supporter
  • closed my Twitter account because of you know who, also my Pokemon Go account because it was increasingly monetised
  • give a monthly donation to the RNLI
  • use public transport or my feet (I can't drive anyway)
  • go by train rather than flying, even though train is more expensive
  • tip waiters and waitresses in cash
  • give away for free anything I want rid of that other people might find useful.

That's enough.

I think you've missed the point of the thread. It's about small acts of rebellion. It doesn't matter what the people on the receiving end think - it's satisfying and sometimes fun to make a small stand!

I make a point not to coo over or show any interest in someone's dog. So many dog owners seem to expect this now. It's weird enough that they treat their dogs like their kids but they now expect a random passer by to think they're amazing. No thanks.

Love me an actual human baby though and will coo over a strangers baby all the time!

every dog I have ever had has NOT wanted to be cooed over by strangers.

why is giving stuff away rebellious?

Purplebunnie · 20/04/2026 16:27

I don't buy from Shein and Temu.

Swapped to shampoo/condition bars and we have an egg in our washing machine to reduce use of plastic, don't use fabric conditioner anymore. We have an electric car and also solar panels. I'm trying to save the planet on my own, that's my finger up at those who say global warming isn't happening

I collect run off water when running taps to hot or cold A) to save the planet and B) as a finger to our water supplier who are ducking useless. Use collected water for plants, flushing toilet etc

I will not give any money to the RSPCA absolutely useless and some bloody rude staff in their admin.

I withdrew from X when Musk took over

I won't use the local dance school for Silver Swan classes and will be travelling 40 minutes further away as she was a right bitch to my DD

Won't watch any John Wayne films after I found out about his behaviour at a certain Oscars ceremony. Only found this out recently. He was my mom's favorite actor and we used to watch together. Doesn't make any sense as they are all dead and not getting any royalties but that's rebellion for you

Most of these are just part of a normal, thoughtful eco conscious lifestyle though.
Not acts of rebellion.

DigitalIDisTotalControl · 20/04/2026 16:28

At Waitrose I avoid the self checkouts that they implemented since Covid, and use the cashier checkouts, even though it means queuing and a slower process.

I carry and use cash, alongside cashless.

I do not trust and will not give to big charities, only to local ones.

I never used pronouns and consider those that still do as being embarrassing at this point.

I generally minimise the number of apps I need to use to simplify life, also minimise any unnecessary engagements with 'authorities'.

I will not sign up to various loyally schemes even though it means forgoing discounts, as these companies are basically paying for your data at this point.

Trying to remain 'old-school' where possible rather than change for the sake of changing.

Turned off main stream media such as BBC, Sky, Channel4 news.

Reading classic Western books from more than 80 years ago.

Listening to Classical music.

I believe MJ was innocent.

I don't respect people who buy puppies regardless of whether they are from ethical, wonderful, happy puppy farms breeders.

Rescue centres are stacked full of dogs in need of a home. If you want a dog, rescue one.

My dog was rescued from a puppy mill that was being operated by a very well-respected breeder.
'Out front' he ran an incredible operation exactly as you've described.
But 'out back' he kept dozens of dogs in tiny cages, bred from them until they were useless to him, and then left them to die of starvation or shot them.
So, no thanks.

We bought from a family member so we knew they were a small breeder and didn't have a puppy farm

I am aware though of the awful game played by some breeders who present themselves as small businesses but ship puppies around in a criminal network.

But rescue centres don't help themselves. We wanted to rescue. Had a lovely home and would be around all the time but our local rescue centre required you to have been a previous dog owner in order to rescue.

I used to turn Walliams' books face down wherever I saw them on sale.

Then his publishers caught up and I'm saved a job now.

I do a lot of these too.

I can drive but no longer have a car. I walk, catch the bus or train. I haven't flown for years
Reuse and recycle - for example, my DH recently repaired a bird nesting box roof using part of my old laptop 😆
Wear clothes until they fall apart
Buy from local independent shops whenever possible - we go to a local greengrocers, butchers, sweetshop, deli, cafes etc.
Buy second hand where possible
Library
Tip in cash
Put unwanted things on our local facebook group for free collection, or donate to charity shops.
Grow our own fruit and veg, make wine, jam, pickles, etc.

I love being over 50 - I can just very happily be myself.

GrumpyButOk · 20/04/2026 16:32

Currently boycotting:
Nike, because of the Mary Earps shirt debacle.

Currys/PC World, because of an advert many years ago which boasted a powerful laptop for a male student and went on to state that a less powerful, cheaper version for shopping was available (in pink and used by the student's girlfriend).

A local car dealership where, on arrival, the salesman brushed past me and said to my husband "Can I help you sir?". My husband said "Why don't you try speaking to the person with the money who actually wants to buy a car?". When the salesman turned back to me, I said "Don't bother" and we left, never to return.

Next, because of a recent thread here where the OP was ripped off over the return of some trainers.

I also refuse to shop anywhere that holds me prisoner until I prove I haven't stolen anything. Sainsbury's, I'm looking at you.

why is giving stuff away rebellious?

Because I could make money out of it and don't; because the people who get the things I give away are usually broke and I'm supporting them; because if they don't buy a new one, it's a tiny blow against capitalism.

This reminds me of my late DM who saw Lee Marvin filming a western in Spain in the 1950s. She thought he was rude to her and her friend, and hated him for the next 50 years.

I don’t buy ever from Primark, Shein, or Temu. Anything mass produced and knocked out cheaply. No
