What little acts of rebellion or activism do you do?

I’m not talking about going on marches, but minor things, that you know about.

Mine is I won’t play Michael Jackson songs, after all the alleged behaviour, which certainly wouldn’t be accepted by today’s standards.

The second is I won’t buy McCain products, after they put out an advert for Smileys, which referred to ‘knocker’s’ in them. I thought that language had died out in the seventies.

Could anyone tell me a good documentary that would convince my friend about Michael Jackson ? She’s convinced he’s innocent, I’m not

Leaving Neverland, apologies if posted already just catching up

If I'm writing to a mixed sex couple, I put the woman's name first.

I bought the dc a load of Sylvanian Families secondhand and gifted them in family groups than included single parents, same sex couples and blended families.

Whenever I get a message about family meet ups from anyone on dp's side of the family I reply "I'm not sure I'll get dp to text you about it".

There used to be a NO BALL GAMES sign on a lamppost outside our house, which is in a location that's an ideal spot for small children to kick a ball around. It's not there any more.

I love this, hooray for the unknown sign remover! 🤩

I live near such a middle class city. On one side street, someone has graffiti-ed on ET to such a sign - so that it now reads: "NO BALLET GAMES". Cracks me up every time!

Aintgointogoa · 20/04/2026 14:28

It's not really 'activism' as such I suppose, but where I live drivers are hard wired to ignore any pedestrian crossing, even where clearly marked. Cars are king ! It drives (ha ha) me bonkers. I gave up trying to wait and now march out onto the crossing with my hand up to pause the flow (for all of 10 second 🙄) Some drivers will pass around me ffs. I flip them the finger. If they stop I blow them a kiss. A friend of mine said he's worried I might get shot 😆 It's my mission. Small (very small) victories !
When I last visited London, I never got tired of using crossings and sometimes did it just for the sheer pleasure of busy traffic stopping as soon as I put my foot on the zebra. It was like a super power.

On a form at work when asked for preferred pronouns, I put ‘second person singular’. Nicked it from someone on here😃.

That’s brilliant, I love it 😆

I report antisemitism every time I see it, particularly from the useful “won’t someone think of the babies” idiots

That’s not quite the burn you think it is, because I don’t own any products by those companies!! Go and have a look at Jewish Voice For Peace, they are the honourable Jews

Honourable Jews? WTAF?

I’m with you on MJ songs OP.I don’t even like watching people dancing in his own peculiar little style.

I avoid books by men I find obnoxiously sexist even though they’re highly regarded - Updike, Phillip Roth, Saul Bellow, Amis. Thankfully they’re a bit past it now.

I still listen to hiphop even though I’m a middle-aged middle class woman. It was the language of protest of my youth and I love it as much now as I when I was 17.

Edited

I listen to hip hop too for the same reason,

Plus, as a middle aged white woman I take some solace in the fact that Eminem is only 2 years younger then me 😬

Madarch · 20/04/2026 14:33

I deliberately farted as I walked past Laura keunssberg during the time she was cosying up with Boris Johnson on the news every night.

Piglet89 · 20/04/2026 14:33

I park in the Church hall car park beside my son’s school, though it’s for patrons only.

I don’t do that if it’s really packed - but, more often than not, it’s three quarters empty!

CatrionaBalfour · 20/04/2026 14:34

Thank you, @SerafinasGoose . I was responding to @Wicked123 's categories of Jew. "Honourable" or otherwise.
Only Israel had been mentioned to that point. She commented on Jews.
I am not Jewish or Israeli, but like all decent (or honourable) people, I'm horrified at the rise in antisemitism in the UK.
Some very ignorant people obviously conflate Jews with Israel, and seem to require standards for Jews not required from other groups.
Very concerning.

ThriveAT · 20/04/2026 13:57

Do you watch the news?

I do. Studiously, and probably to my detriment. And for this reason it's very clear as to what's missing. I'm at a loss as to why Palestine occupies so much news space whereas other serious human rights atrocities and genocides are largely ignored. Sudan/South Sudan; the ongoing situation in Ukraine; human trafficking and its hideous repercussions across the Sahara/Mediterranean corridor; the current states of Lebanon and Syria; women sold into sexual slavery in Ethopia. Where is the constant news reporting and hand wringing about these?

Also YY to the response from @DoraTheExplorer9 upthread. The news coverage is skewed toward specific crises which significantly narrows the focus. And as far as Palestine specifically is concerned, how quickly the state of things since Arafat/Rabin is forgotten. There was a solution posed. We saw what happened as a response to that - as well as the likely direction in which the ANO probably ended up.

What else is this but an effort to signal complicity with the 'right' side of history and the correct end of the political spectrum: the loosely-perceived 'left' which changes with expediency anyway?

Cattenberg · 20/04/2026 14:40

For me, it has been due to the baby formula scandal in impoverished countries.

Allegedly, Nestle promoted formula milk in maternity units and provided a free supply of it for a short time. This meant that some mothers stopped lactating. They then had to buy formula milk which many of them struggled to afford, so it was common for the mothers to over-dilute the formula to make it last longer. Other issues included the lack of safe water supplies, the lack of facilities to sterilise bottles and instructions on the formula packaging that many mothers could not read. UNICEF estimated that formula-fed babies living in unsanitary and disease-ridden conditions were several times more likely to die from infections than their breast-fed peers.

What's with not giving way to other people? I don't understand, it works both ways you know.

As you seem to have missed the numerous previous posts about this I can only suggest that you read this article/ google 'men expect women to move out of the way' or simply observe a pedestrian area for a few minutes

I boycot Israeli products - can’t be supporting genocide!!

Same. The idea of buying eg dates grown in the occupied West Bank is abhorrent.

In the interest of transparency, I'd boycott products that fund Hamas too - but Israel also controls exports from Gaza and the West Bank and has crippled the areas through its blockades.

Let's not be funding terrorism OR genocide if we can help it.

GinToBegin · 20/04/2026 14:44

Mine is really petty, but when the radio or local news comes on, I turn the volume off while the presenter says who they are. Mate, I am not even close to giving a fuck who you are, I just want to know what’s going on in the world.

I shop differently from the shop layout. When you first go in you are expected to buy your fruit and veg, then chilled goods, then cupboard/household, then freezer often last. No.
I do cupboard/household first.

Thought I was the only one that did this! I hate being coerced into the path someone else wants me to take.

People presumably have the ability to speak? Presumably not everyone knows the international sign for ‘move your bag because, whilst I think you are ignorant (even though you may not have noticed me) I am being even more ignorant and won’t actually ask you’?

So, you're on a busy train, your bag is occupying a space. Someone comes and hovers by your seat and looks at you. Why do you suppose that is?!

I am a regular commuter and put my bag in the seat sometimes.... but I'm aware I've done this and that people will be wanting to sit there at some point. So I keep an eye during every stop and move my bag when the train fills up. common courtesy.
