What little acts of rebellion or activism do you do?

I’m not talking about going on marches, but minor things, that you know about.

Mine is I won’t play Michael Jackson songs, after all the alleged behaviour, which certainly wouldn’t be accepted by today’s standards.

The second is I won’t buy McCain products, after they put out an advert for Smileys, which referred to ‘knocker’s’ in them. I thought that language had died out in the seventies.

I'm a lot nicer to dog-walkers who have rescue dogs compared to those who've bought their dogs.

I'm actively rude to people who replace their aging dogs with new puppies while the aging dog is still alive.

Sorry to be perhaps asking a daft question….

lots of people boycott Nestle…why?

I believe sexual abuse and rape victims.

So do I.

I also think financial compensation for heinous crimes is fair - our justice system formally recognises in this in the form of the criminal injuries compensation scheme.

Of course, state compensation is generally paltry compared to the damage of the crime which is why we have the civil court system where you sue someone for compensation even if they weren’t found guilty in a criminal case.

Would I settle out of court for a sum to avoid putting my child through a deeply damaging court case in front of the entire world? Of course.

It can pay for all his therapy and go some way to compensate for the trauma.
If Jackson is not going to do jail time for such an odious crime he can at least make some financial reparation for it.

plaidpillow · 20/04/2026 14:05

I change he to she in books when reading to my toddler when it’s all male characters (eg animals, it shocked me how many kids books are male centred when they could be both sexes easily).

I don’t buy from brands that pay to be certified by the halal food authority, or halal meat or from halal restaurants.

I have a mental boycott list for any brands that jumped on the removal of women’s rights in the name of trans rights.

Flowerlovinglady · 20/04/2026 14:09

That's a criminal offence!

Won't shop anywhere that supports the gender wang movement.
Thinking of wearing / buying a cross necklace after reading some posts here, though I'm an atheist
Buy coffee from Gails where I didn't before, because of the constant profoundly hypocritical bleating of others, and I want to show support to my Jewish friends.
If I'm watching tv and David Tennant or Emma Watson comes on, I switch it off.

We could be twins 😂

This is the kind of low level rebellion that I love 😂

Tell us where it is, and we won’t go either. 😀

Why?? Why is the St George flag racist?
This really annoys me, every other country can fly their flag with no issues but as soon as the St George flag is displayed, it’s Racist

If Putin launched an invasion tomorrow, all those smug, sneering lefties would be waving St George flags and Union Jacks and expecting the very people they despise to go and defend them. For decades now the left have done all they can to make us ashamed of our history and culture. Radio 4 can’t even mention Jane Austen without linking her to colonialism, and Churchill has been transformed from national hero to national villain. On top of that, mass immigration has been used as a tool to IMPOSE a new identity on us. Frankly, what has been done to English people over the last 30 years is a crime. I will never forget and I will never forgive.

I don’t go to Pret A Manger as they didn’t give a shit about labelling their products even if that resulted in anaphilaxis reactions and a death. They may label properly now but under duress.

i don’t buy bottled water, I find the fact that we have been convinced to fork out good money, for something so basic and essential, atrocious. And that is before we consider the stupid amount of extra plastic we need to deal with.

The last one is more controversial, I chose not to recycle plastic, not because I don’t care but because as a country, we use more plastic than what we need to recycle so what is not recycled is sold to poorer countries, we are basically paying them to get our rubbish out of our view and our conscience and without our recycle means they are only polluting their own countries or poisoning their populations when they burn it, so I choose to use as little plastic as I can rather than recycling it.

Agree. Of the reduced reuse and recycle mantra, reduce is far and away the most important bit.

Why would you go and stand if someone asked you to move your bag off the seat?

Because I don’t want to sit next to someone. I’m AuDHD and don’t want to be that close to a human being if I can avoid it 🤷‍♀️

I think the problem is that you do so you’re getting a completely skewed and biased view of the conflict.

Completely skewed and biased how?

I refuse to fly in or out of Heathrow after a sales assistant in one of the shops was horrible to me and literally looked me up and down with a disgusted look on her face, After looking me up and down she said 'I don't think this is the kind of shop for you' I was in there picking something up for my boss who was stood behind me and saw what happened, He wasn't pleased at all.

So like Pretty Woman and Extras and all those other films?

godmum56 · 20/04/2026 14:15

I can't get why not doing botox or dying your hair are activism or acts of rebellion?

NotMyRealAccount · 20/04/2026 14:16

There used to be a NO BALL GAMES sign on a lamppost outside our house, which is in a location that's an ideal spot for small children to kick a ball around. It's not there any more.

Do you mean people who rehome their aging dogs or just that have an old and a young dog?

Aluna · 20/04/2026 14:17

I’m with you on MJ songs OP.I don’t even like watching people dancing in his own peculiar little style.

I avoid books by men I find obnoxiously sexist even though they’re highly regarded - Updike, Phillip Roth, Saul Bellow, Amis. Thankfully they’re a bit past it now.

I still listen to hiphop even though I’m a middle-aged middle class woman. It was the language of protest of my youth and I love it as much now as I when I was 17.

Avalovelace · 20/04/2026 14:18

On a form at work when asked for preferred pronouns, I put ‘second person singular’. Nicked it from someone on here😃.

I look for opportunities to move books promoting self-id. Sometimes I move them to a completely random shelf and put them on the shelf with the spine facing inwards.
I have on occasion moved them to the "Fairytales" section.

whilst I applaud the sentiment, you know the only person that affects is the member of staff who has to put the books back where they were?

GameOfJones · 20/04/2026 14:19

I totally agree about Michael Jackson and I was a huge fan of his and had all of his albums. But I believe those boys and haven't been able to listen to Michael Jackson songs for years now. If his music comes on the radio I will switch it off. I don't know how anybody can hear that one of the boys was able to mention an identifying mark on Michael Jackson's genitals and still pretend that he was innocent.

Like others I will actively boycott companies that support trans ideology. Lush, Ben & Jerry's and Snag tights to name a few.

I won't buy chocolate that has emulsifiers and palm oil in it.

I don't despise the military, I don't think the flag wavers in our local town would be able to defend themselves against Putin's forces! They seem spectacularly under-equipped in multiple departments.

Flags up lamp-poles fall down, get caught in trees, tear and look tatty, it all looks so downmarket. The ones round my house are not a source of pride.

I do think the British flag is fine to be celebrated, I think it's great if people get permission for flag-poles in their gardens and fly proper good quality flags that don't look tatty; see also public buildings. Nothing wrong with national pride, everything wrong with making poorer roads look even tattier and marking them out as undesirable (you will notice that no wealthy areas do this, even if they have their own private beliefs about it, they don't devalue their own property prices).
